  1. Unless we're ever going to get a well balanced, interesting conventional warfare system that all, be that the administration, the playerbase, or both, can agree on (read: never), and considering that with recent changes, kamikazeing with units (eg. full plane suicides that were effective in NPOLT and other past wars) has been entirely nerfed, rendering obsolete mentioned successful tactics of an outnumbered/sat on force, ergo, eliminating the conventional means of fighting back and dealing damage for a losing side in a war, the only simple fix I see is indeed buffing the non-conventional means of fighting back against your opponents, ie nukes and missiles. I'd echo suggestions put forward by Potpie, Leo, and others. Make nukes able to kill more improvements than 2, for example 5, like Potpie suggested. It would be worth noting that it should probably have the amount of NPPs killed limited to two, and more importantly, allow another daily nuke buy, either as a Space Program bonus, or NRF itself. Converting VDS/ID % chances of shooting down missiles or nukes to flat % damage reduction is an interesting idea as well. In essence, there should be a cost to war and players should not be discouraged or limited to fight back, but rather the avenue of doing so should always be open, now whether you are proactive enough about it is a whole other matter (for instance, you would need to find ways to buy that second nuke, as effective blockading and sitting on an opponent could easily deny it).

  3. Hi everyone! I am excited to announce some pretty significant updates being pushed live here. First and foremost, 4 new national projects that have been in the works for a couple of months now have been QA tested are being pushed live. Here's what they are and what they do: Arable Land Agency This project makes it easier and more cost effective to acquire new habitable land, reducing the cost of purchasing new land in all cities by 5%. This project costs $3,000,000 and 1,500 Coal and 1,500 Lead. Advanced Engineering Corps This project develops new technologies that make building new infrastructure and acquiring new land cheaper. This project reduces the cost of new land and infrastructure by 5%. Advanced Engineering Corps requires the Center for Civil Engineering and Arable Land Agency national projects to be built. This project costs $50,000,000 and 10,000 Gasoline, 10,000 Munitions, and 1,000 Uranium. Clinical Research Center This project is a dedicated effort to combating infectious diseases in your nation, increasing the disease reduction rate from Hospitals by 1% from 2.5% to 3.5% each. This project also allows you to build an additional Hospital in each city. This project costs $10,000,000 and 100,000 Food. Specialized Police Training Program This project increases the quality and effectiveness of your city police forces. This project increases the crime reduction rate from Police Stations by 1% from 2.5% to 3.5% each. This project also allows you to build an additional Police Station in each city. This project costs $10,000,000 and 100,000 Food. Also, in case you missed it, we added a new Domestic Policy called Rapid Expansion that gives you an additional 5% discount to land purchases. Note that these domestic policies and projects all stack when it comes to reducing infrastructure and land costs, so you can get up to 15% off of each if you have the relevant domestic policy and projects built. On a more minor note, we have also changed how VIPs can upload custom city images. You can now upload directly to the game instead of needing to host it offsite and paste in the URL. This will help alleviate some of the issues we've been having (mainly from users using imgur.com and the images then not displaying correctly.) We have also added a setting to adjust the font size displayed when you use the game. You can set this per device, and there's a video tutorial explaining this here: https://youtu.be/5eF4pVMJHME We have added the ability for everyone (not just VIPs) to upload and name a custom currency for their nation. We have a video tutorial on that here: https://youtu.be/fmkj6bD7EDk You can now publicly commend or denounce other players' nations in-game. This doesn't do anything but send them a notification and make a record in the activity log, but all commendments and denouncements are tabulated on your nation page. 6 new achievements were added related to this new feature as well. Note that to prevent spamming it, we have put a 10 minute restriction on commendments/denouncements for any particular nation (you can't spam someone by commending/denouncing repeatedly.) Let me know what you think about the changes! We have lots more in the works. If you would like to contribute to the development and marketing of Politics and War, please consider making a donation (purchasing Credits.) You can do a lot with Credits, from getting an extra $200,000,000 for your nation each month to putting up fun player advertisements in the game. You can Donate and see everything you can do with Credits on the Donate page here: https://politicsandwar.com/donate/

  6. Maybe make nukes cost 250 aluminum and uranium more (up to 1000 aluminum/ 500 uranium) but make nukes destroy 5 improvements instead of 2. Personally when I get nuked I really don't care, I won't have to rebuild the city 90% of the time. Nukes currently are near exclusively for infra damage, but what if there was that risk of the nuke really destroying enough that you have to rebuild the city?

  8. Hey everyone. So some may have heard me on Thalmor Radio. Was definitely interesting. I had a rest soon after my part in it. After waking up, though, I started to think one thing. While there are 2 main groups in this war, the Quack side and what I'll call the Anti Quack side, those sides have groups of their own. For a while, I've been mentioning certain individuals but not really connecting them too strongly with the smaller Alliances/Spheres they represent. It's time to change that. On the Quack side, we have Boyce, who is the leader of the Terminus Est Alliance. I think it can arguably be said that had it not been for his statement to Vader that HM, TCW and Swamp might be attacking Quack in early December, this war might never have started. However, his conversations he had with Sphinx don't seem to justify this assessment. Those in the Quack block might want to look into that. On my side, it was Ronny's fellow HM leader who made what seems to have been the pivotal statement to persuade Ronny that Swamp wanted to attack Quack: "Swamp reached out to me and told me they are talking with TCW about joining together to counter Quack's growth". But is that really what Ronny's fellow HM leader meant? Even more importantly, is that what Ronny's HM leader's -source- meant? Again, this is something that groups in the anti Quack faction might want to put some pressure into finding out. Swamp leaders in Immortals and TFP in particular should be incentivized, since they have made it clear that they knew nothing of this plan to attack Quack and I'm sure it would be great vindication if they learned that Ronny and possibly Ronny's source misunderstood. Conversely, if there really was a Swamp faction that wanted to attack Quack, I would imagine that they would like to know who it was. They may wish to deal with it all internally, but the bottom line is, it would definitely help clear the notion that the Immortals and TFP had anything to do with this plan if it in fact existed.

  10. Iron Dome at 50% is fine in my opinion. Missiles are considerably cheaper than nukes so having them blocked more often makes sense. Iron Dome being as effective as it is basically makes it a must have project which I dont think there is anything wrong with that. If Alex wants more war and destruction he should also make a project (or make space program) to be able to produce 2 nukes like he has with missiles. Its trickier to accomplish because the amount safe from raiding would never cover 2 nukes but if someone is willing to risk it or get crafty with how they pull it off why not reward them.

  11. Aluminum simply is not being spent in wars, and I completely disagree with the others here about increasing the steel cost of tanks, if you look at the worldwide total steel graphs you'll see that tanks are at a good place price wise.
    3 points
  12. 1) The effectiveness of an iron dome should be reduced to 30%. Iron domes are cheap to construct and block 50% of missiles, which makes them look a little overpowered to me. 2) People should be given the option to target one improvement to destroy while using a nuke (not including power plants). The other improvement should be chosen randomly. Naturally, the odds of a particular type of improvement being targeted in the second choice will have to be adjusted so they reflect the odds as per the current system.
    3 points
  13. Eh, that runs counter to the entire situation in which nukes/missiles are used in the first place. So it's effectively nerfing them. Considering that they have to go through a 50/20% check in the first place, curtailing their damage even more is extra punishing for no real reason. (To clarify, addressing the GC/AS/Blockade debuffs).

  15. Spies kill to many spies so either increase spy buys to 10 daily or have a maximum death of 10 spies daily (not per op) Nukes are expensive and should be alot harder to destroy. Maybe there could be a project that allows you to protect 5 nukes and Missiles? Spy attacks on tanks needs to be decreased possibly halved A project that allows you to recruit 5 special agents that work like spies but cannot be assassinated costs 10X the cost of standard spies to buy and use but also have a increased success rate. Another thing that could be pretty cool is the ability to hide the number of nukes/missoles/spies that a nation has and maybe even the ability to lie about the number of soldiers tanks planes and ship's

  18. I think the solution to tanks problems are a bit more simple than you guys are making it out to be. Your all focused on the cost and the effectiveness of tanks but actually the effectiveness is fine on planes[via GAs] - the real issue is the maximum number of tanks a nation can hold. Alex reduced the max number of planes early this year, so I think that fixing the amount of tanks per factory to a lower number will solve all of these issues at once, thus I think we should just reduce the amount of tanks per factory from 250 to 200. Tl;dr : By lowering the maximum number of tanks a nation can hold it will also lower the effectiveness of tanks destroying aircraft. Thus balancing tanks in being greatly useful but not incredibly OP. Edit : Oh and just to add some extra icing on the cake maintaining max tanks becomes cheaper too. Additionally I also support Akuryo's suggestion to upgrade dogfight effectiveness - not airstriking targets like tanks or soldiers but solely for air vs air by at least a little bit. I've had MS or PV's while suiciding into a superior airforce that should have never happened. But it did.

  21. I don't see the reason why you shouldn't. It doesn't happen often (because you can beige someone before they're able to launch their third nuke, let alone fourth), and if it does, it's either because the guy AFK'd, or deliberately let himself get beiged. The former is the other party's fault, while the latter is a conscious trade. Since you can only produce a nuke a day, at most one person is at risk of this. You can simply cycle to nullify that risk. If there's a specific situation where you happen to be the last dude holding someone down and that's the predicament you're in, then again, it's a matter of a trade. I've had to have people eat beiges for the purpose of denying rebuild time to their foes in several wars. It happens. You just mitigate the damage best you can and deal with it. Wanting anything else is just wanting to have the cake and eat it to.

  22. Yes let’s take away all means of fighting when you’re outnumbered. If anything we should be able to build more nukes and Alex should scrap iron dome and vds. Since “eVeRy wAr iS a DogPiLe” why not give the ones being sat on better means to fight back when they’re zeroed?
    2 points
  23. I think the biggest issue is the rate they can be killed at versus the rate they be rebuilt at. It only takes a day or two to lose all your spies but it can take between 15 and 25 days to get back to full depending on what projects you have and assuming no one spies you again in the meantime. I'm not sure of the best way to fix it exactly but I've always thought that a bit odd, whether I was able to reap the benefits of it or not. @Lord Tyrion the protection there for nukes/missiles exists now because it didn't use to and people did exactly what you said, used bots to snipe them the second they were built. 5 minute timers wouldn't make a significant difference. The better option imo is to either leave the one nuke alone or to pay attention to when it was built
    2 points
  24. They probably do kill a little more than they should, but that's not overly concerning to me at least. The one thing I've never liked is the protection for missiles and nukes built within the day. I understand people could probably use bots to destroy them right when they are first built, so maybe there's a 5 minute window to launch it or something, but doing spy ops and not knowing whether you're able to destroy that nuke/missile or not is a bit odd. But if that didn't change, the game shouldn't even let you launch a spy attack if there's nothing that you can destroy - it should just say there are no nukes available to be destroyed and not have your op go through then. Same with when they have zero spies, I've heard that sometimes that gets your own spies killed - but maybe that's been addressed.

  31. I'd want to make a new debuff for Soldiers. Basically if you're in a war and you Blockade them, get Air Superiority, have Ground Control, maybe something like "Logistics Control", a combined benefit for having all 3 other debuffs. It could (1 or more of the following): Do double casualties to enemy Soldiers Half the casualties of enemy Soldiers Reduce enemy Soldiers from damaging Tanks When you're winning a war, it can be frustrating to dominate every level of combat but still have opponents suicide cheap Soldiers into tanks for additional damages. This could prevent that from happening. It may also make more well-rounded wars where players consider different ways of winning wars. It can also help scenarios of down-declares where they have a mass of soldiers but don't bother to build tanks, planes, or ships to give their opponents a way to overcome their mass of soldiers if they don't commit resources elsewhere.

  33. It's actually the same with nukes. His max is 1875 but he has 1860 at the moment. So he should've lost at least 15 planes, but lost none.

  34. Regarding missiles, there is a current bug that if you missile your opponent's hangar, and even if he has max planes, it does not kill the planes. That bug should be fixed.

  35. @Lord Tyrion I assure you that nuke sniping was definitely something that happened, and bots were not used. That being said I think you're right and the game should be more clear about when a nuke/missile is spyable, nothing is more annoying than a person basically spy slotfilling someone because they don't realize the nuke is protected. As for pre, perhaps buff spy vs infra? It's literally so bad that it's a meme, so maybe let the spy kill some infra and a random improvement (excluding NPPs). It wouldn't make it overly strong, but it would give the function some use.
    1 point
  36. I've had the same concern during all wars regarding how much resistance the nukes/missiles take off. It doesn't seem you should be able to win a war solely on nukes. Because the game mechanics don't encourage people to win wars, rather, sit on an opponent for five days - the cost to do that may be eating 4 nukes, even though you have an opponent completely zeroed - and then you could lose a war that you're trying to have expire. That seems wrong - so if we're going to have to eat nukes to sit on somebody, at least don't let them win the war. Separately though, I think if you have an opponent on GC, AS and Blockade your opponent should be considered occupied and not be able to build/launch nukes or missiles against you (and maybe the trade off would be a smaller percentage of success if they do build them and launch them). Understandably the risk of not allowing nukes/missiles to be built if occupied is that there wouldn't be much cost for people winning wars to just sit indefinitely on an opponent, so that would need to be factored in somehow.

  41. Hello Everyone, On this day, we celebrate the alliance that has become House Stark and the friends we share it with. Whether you are new to the game or have been here since the beginning, this is a chance to reflect on our relationships and stance as an alliance, and where we are headed in the coming year. While real life the last year has been difficult for all of us, we have been there for one another. We are nations helping nations, friends helping friends, all of us doing what we can to help get us through these turbulent times. And as we go through another war, while there may be many of us on opposite sides, we are all united in a common goal, to create a break from real life that is fun for everyone. House Stark's success is because of its members but also the friendships we have come to have over the last 4 years. People who encounter us know we strive to live up to our values of loyalty, equality, courage, and compassion, and know that diversity is our strength. What makes House Stark special is not the belief that this is the best alliance in Orbis – it's the knowledge that it could be, and that we will keep working to build that alliance. Because no challenge we face will be too great, if we face it together. Today, we celebrate the alliance House Stark and tomorrow, we look to the future and move forward, with all of you. And with that vision in mind, I am proud to announce the first ever Northerners Day. A day, not only to celebrate the accomplishments of the alliance, but to also celebrate the accomplishments of its own members, the friendships we have created, and the accomplishments yet to come. We wish everyone luck in the wars to come, and know that winter is here to stay.

  42. I never said they did it for fun or sport or even that it is the norm. What is the norm is police brutality, against citizens of all color. I didn't focus my attention there because I wanted to stay in this narrow line of questioning, but we agree. As far as there being an "epidemic" of police murdering black people, I don't see it, but there is a number of murders committed by police that a society should not accept, and a number of brutal acts by police a society should not accept. This isn't even a strictly moral stance, it's an effectiveness stance. Many institutions lose all effectiveness when trust in them is gone, the police are one of them. We fundamentally disagree about whether someone can be killed for an alleged crime, but I don't think that's a stance I'll talk you back from. What I will say is, I agree, being a police officer is an incredibly difficult and stressful job. But, you know what is also stressful? Having a gun pointed at you. I've watched many videos of people being shot just because they are visibly scared shitless of the guns pointed at them and therefore fail to obey instructions because they are under enormous amounts of duress. You know what the difference between a citizen scared shitless of a police officer wielding deadly force and a police officer? One is trained in deescalation (or should be), one has a civic and professional responsibility to control their emotions and reactions, one is wielding a weapon already that can snuff a life out in an instant. The other isn't. I think there is also an enormous discrepancy between when a police officer actually deems the drawing of a weapon necessary based on race. I remember as a kid watching videos that were meant to be comedies of naked violent white men literally assaulting cops, and people laughing it off. That shit still happens. I would still be pissed if the police were shooting the naked white guy, but there would be far less room to blame it on race. I'm kinda rambling, so sorry about that, but one statistic that I think really captures to some degree what both of us are talking about: 1/5 police feel near constant frustration or anger, and this anger is directed at citizens they police. Workplace frustration is normal, but it's deadly when it happens to police and breeds a sort of callousness that may not make murder fun, but makes murder easier. I recently wrote a short piece about this. First, you're not alone, nearly half of the population doesn't trust the police. The police have an image problem they are utterly unmotivated and refuse to address, instead they blame it on others. And I agree, we are never going to get a perfect police force, but we aren't even close to trying to have one. Perfection should be the goal, but knowing we can only do our best. THis is not our best: 1. Of the 50 states, only 16 require de-escalation training, of those 16, only 10 set a minimum hours requirement, with the highest minimum being 4 hours per year (good job, Massachusetts?) 2. On average, a state or local police officer who attends police academy will only need a High School Diploma and will receive 806 hours of training (excluding field training which is typically an additional 500 hours). For comparison, barbers need 1,500 hours. 3. Two studies have found that at least 40 percent of police officer families experience domestic violence, in contrast to 10 percent of families in the general population. 4. Police are also kept on the force at incredibly high rates after breaking the law (29% stay employed after a DUI, 28% after domestic violence, 26% after assault) I keep trying to make this first bolded point. BLM is, by all measures, a coalition, not a unified movement. I don't condone looting, rioting, or violence, but we've just expressed that enormous stress can cause a police officer to murder. I can't imagine a life of stress and frustration at the lack of accountability by the police. I am generally really confused what a second amendment uprising would look like? Would it be peaceful? From the folks I hear talk about it, it would be violent. This is tyranny through a different vehicle, in my opinion. I disagree with both the second amendment preppers and the BLM rioters, because I think we still have democratic institutions which are somewhat responsive to the desires of the people... when that finally goes away, ask me again how I feel about it. Finally, there have been enough verified reports of right wing and anarchist instigators and provocateurs in these protests. I am relatively certain it doesn't account for all of the violence, but it's certainly exacerbated it. Not going to touch on the politics of it, because honestly, I can count on one hand the amount of politicians I trust at the national level. Agreed on most points. The issue is "reform" has been tried time and time again. The gap between the idea police force and what we have right now is ENORMOUS. Also, look at the reception that these reforms have within the police community. They are rejected out of hand, and cops feel so comfortable that they commit all sorts of atrocious race baiting and trolling online. You can't tell me that attitude is the result of stressful split second decision making. That is a conscious decision to reject the key responsibility of your job, and to see yourself as some badass skullbasher who has the backing of the government and strong police unions. You want to reform the police? You're going to have to fire a frick ton of police. For instance, here is a list of the NYPD officers who are STILL employed despite tons of VERIFIED accusations from the community they serve, many of them making over 6 figures in tax payer dollars: https://www.nyclu.org/en/campaigns/nypd-misconduct-database Man you touched on poverty in your closing statements, I need another page or two just to tackle the crippling effect of poverty on crime, health, education, etc. As always, glad to have these conversations.
