  1. People just need to focus on relative, rather than absolute growth. If your goal is to be #1 and not to have a specific, ever increasing city count, then suddenly war becomes a perfectly valid, and indeed necessary, mechanism of achieving that. Even leaderboard chasers could focus more on beating down people near them in the rankings vs treating everything as a PvE grindfest. Of course, the latter is less risky, especially for entrenched leaders, so it doesn't happen. On another note, somewhere in this thread (can't remember now), it was suggested that betraying your friends for the sake of dynamism is bad and will result in nobody willing to work with you. I agree completely. But fighting people you get along with != betrayal. Nobody is saying you need to string a friend along and stab them in the back (a la tenages plot against Rose) to be dynamic. Having a clean break with people you once allied with, and treating them as new competitors to take down, is not betrayal. The problem is the entrenched idea that you shouldn't 'give up your friends.' I agree, if you consider someone a friend you should be there when they need you. But facing a war in an online browser game isn't them needing you. Competing against one another in said game isn't giving up the friendship. Its not an attitude we see outside nation sims either, else no group could ever play Risk or Monopoly. Hell the first people I attack in any online game are usually the people I know. In the past we used to have a lot of atwar games to kill time outside PW, and without fail the closest friends would be at each others throats within the first few turns. People here seem to have a hard time separating themselves from their in-game personas. We're not nation leaders, the actions taken purely in game are not done by us IRL against others, but by our pieces on the game board. But because there isn't a game client with graphics, we forget that. The biggest hurdle to having a Hyper Dynamic TM environment is the pervasive notion that OOC friends = in-game allies.

  2. I think what you have stated indicates an understanding of (and subsequently the motivations behind) becoming the largest nation/alliance in the game. It is clear to me, and I'm sure many others, that the leaderboards, nation score, alliance score, and such representations of progress are benefited by an aversion to war. What you are getting flak for is not about whether or not it is wise to invoke large alliance wars, but rather whether or not it is fun and worthy of our collective time. What this post represents, at least to me, is a plea to make this game less about preservation and political stagnation and more about friendly, interactive competition. What I believe Pre is asking for is a change of heart regarding the culture and mindset of the game. Thus, I believe, it is impossible to try to determine what would be best for one's nation and simultaneously best for themselves. While it may seem the most obvious to find nation score paramount to personal enjoyment, I implore you to reconsider. I understand that you need to build a nation to play the game, and that sometimes the downtime isn't too exciting, but when I think back on my time spent in this game, I can barely recall my decisions in building my cities. I can barely recall how I came to max production or commerce. I can barely recall what I was thinking as I waited for the hour to change. I especially don't remember the nitpicky mechanics of the game, but what I can recall are the war times. I remember the lead up. I remember the declarations. I remember feeling strong emotions whenever I saw my enemy's stupid little icon. I remember trying to outfight in the game and outwit in the forums. OWF fights were petty, and sometimes they weren't so light-hearted, but goddamn were they fun. I remember staying up until 4 AM because @$%&ing Keegoz wanted to catch our enemy off-guard. I remember hating his guts for it, but respecting the play. Even more importantly I remember what I did in those times to help those around me. I remember how desperate I was to make a difference in a war; all the time forgetting that all that mattered was I had someone's back. Then, when tensions fell and everyone's nations were destroyed, I remember playing video games with those I called my enemy just hours previously. Stupid Pfeiffer and his pesky clan of Dio-lovers, but damn did he put up a fight in Rust. To me, that is what makes this game. What I am trying to ask of you, and anyone, is to find meaning in this game outside of the score of your nation. I think we may find ourselves having more fun than we realized we might.

  3. From The Desk of Wembley Fraggle Minister of Awesome, The Best Nation Ever Greetings Friends!! Great news from Fraggle Rock. Uncle Traveling Matt is dead. That's right, the Uncle of Gobo is no more. I did not shoot him in his muppet mouth like I was accused of doing to Gobo. Instead I paid Doozers to poop into his morning radish juice every day over several years. It's the perfect plan. No more Mister Nice Fraggle, with his Many Hugs, and jolly demeanor. Nope. Nah. No! Old Wembley is back in charge. Wild decisions and in fighting among the Fraggles will be encouraged. My first decision was to free Red Fraggle from jail. Yes I was the one who locked her up during the Fraggle War of 2015. Yes I forgot that I left her there for a few years. But she seems fine? Second decision is to make sure we are prepared for the future. We are currently drawing up plans to turn the power back on in Fraggle Rock. Apparently some Fraggles were hungry and tore up the wiring. We will need to move out of Fraggle Rock while repairs happen. We're hitting the road. Traveling Orbis to see the sights and taste the people. As we are experiencing a minor cash flow issue due to power repairs, we plan to crash on the couches of the willing. Lastly, we are back open for business. Always willing to listen, and will act upon interesting proposals. No Hugs, Wembley Fraggle

  5. Kek. A couple of years ago, my friend and I had thought of finding a loophole around the magazine thing and other stuff. Such as .223 being allowed since it's technically a .22 bullet or Cali compliant style of guns. Unfortunately the text does say that adaptions of military firearms are only gucci in .22 LR, so that fell on the wayside. In the meantime, criminals run around with homemade guns or stolen (many times from armories themselves) FMK-3's, Halcons and whatnot. There was also a scandal over police-issue handguns making their way into the black market too. You'd figure that those would be enough indication that gun control isn't really working, but apparently not.

  6. From the desk of Uncle Traveling Matt The best nation ever, Fraggle Rock Greetings Friends! It's been a while since we have given an update. This shouldn't take more than five minutes to read, and forty minutes to understand. So we're out of our nuke building phase soon. It's true, we can't do it anymore. You cheap bastards have cut off our funding and 700 nukes is fine. Thanks for the cash, giggles, and theft it took to get here. So what's next Fraggle? Great question. Since we are defined by what some consider the dumbest way to build, we are going in the opposite direction. That's right.... conventional build, with a giant pile of nukes in the basement. The power will be turned back on for the first time in three years. Banks and recycling plants will reopen the doors. No more living in the dark and filth we are currently in. We plan to join an alliance. An incredible offer was made for us to run a PR program. We plan to use Fraggle skills to accelerate growth and new opportunities. It's been fun doing nothing for years. Time to do slightly more while not burning the place down. Then again, it's Fraggle, we never go anywhere without matches. Many Hugs, Uncle Traveling Matt

  7. Dear Orbis, Some of you may not know me, many of you do. I'm one of the crotchety old-timers who wanders the halls of browser based nation-sims. Now that I have removed myself from the political arena and become that which I once hunted (to near extinction), I have time to reflect on the past, the present, and the future. I like writing these long diatribes from time to time, even though I doubt many people actually read them. Anyway, lets get into the meat of things. I've often talked about how it's important for the leaders of alliances to take responsibility for the health of this game. There's a symbiotic relationship between the game staff/creators and the big players. I'll avoid talking about Alex, I've done that enough in the past, but often as players we're to afraid to take risks. Considering my current position in the game you might find that sort of statement hypocritical, however I'd say I've done enough to create game content. Two names that come up a lot when talking about major events in the past are Partisan and Prefontaine. Neither of which are around to create those anymore. There are others past and present, yes. But it's hard to rally major events in the current (and the past year or two) political environment. IQ has a strangle hold on the mid tier. TKR-sphere has an strong grasp on the upper tier. When the rest of the game needs to unite to stand a chance at taking out a tier, that's bad. This last war was an attempt to break that up. I want to lift the curtain on some of what was planned, and how it failed. The premise of the war was two fold in the original plans, to take the long running leaders of the game for a loss and to shake up the political world to allow for the creation of new spheres. The first part was a success, but the second was a failure. The original plan was to end IQ post war. Part of IQ was in on this plan. Partisan was going to take Syndicate and ally to NPO. Syndicate was going to keep Rose or House Stark as an ally and drop the rest. NPO was going to keep BC or Polaris as an ally and drop the rest. During this period CoS and TEst were going to give them post war protection for 2 months to avoid their upper tier getting steam rolled while they established a new sphere and allowed the game to shuffle up. The war dragged on, Partisan left, and thus the plan died. Thus BK/NPO stayed tied. NPO and Syndicate have a ton of treaties (protectorates largely, sure, but lets be honest about how protectorates go here). Had the war ended earlier, the plan still might not have worked, but both sides are at fault for the peace talks. Just because this failed, doesn't mean it wasn't worth trying. I understand feeling like there's too much to risk being a large alliance in making big moves, but this is a game. If you try something and lose, at least you played a hand. You're dealt a new hand soon enough. Lots of times moves come from smaller alliances, support those. Take TGH for example. They have active leadership, experienced fighters, seemingly motivated. We need more of that, and we need more of it in alliances that can make large swings. Imagine what would happen to the political landscape if NPO left BK, allied TGH who teamed up with CoS to then hit someone. IQ's core broken up and possibilities arise. Or TKR/Guardian leave tCW and roll them along side TGH. People often get too held up in the mentality of keeping allies for far too long, or only allying friends. Take a risk. Befriend an enemy to accomplish something together. Then when you're done one of you might backstab the other. These sort of moves MAKE the politics here. Looking at the treaty web and knowing how every war is going to play out is boring. One of the big surprise moves of the last war? CoS declaring on Guardian. TKR-sphere believed CoS would fall on their side of the war if at all. tl;dr Your allies don't have to be your friends only. Your foes don't have to be enemies. Hold your leadership to make things happen, or if you're leadership take a chance. We hold onto political grudges too long. Grudges make the game, but like treaties you should keep the same ones for too long. Back to my cave.

  17. You do realize that there is no end goal. No finish line in this game. An individual's success isn't judged by the infrastructure or land they have but by their contribution to the greater game. A player can be less than 5 cities and be more impactful than the mightiest whale. This is why Roq, Leo, Partisan and others are viewed as successful. By simply putting your own personal growth ahead of the game itself proves you and people like minded do not understand the game but simply exist as tools. It is that poor playing style that creates political stagnation and eventually, death.

  18. This may have been said or implied elsewhere, but there are a lot of missed opportunities—specifically, regarding allyship and grudges—due to a basic lack of communication, which then gives way to a lack of trust. There have been several instances where allied govs go into peace talks with the opposition and find out their opposition are more reasonable or more appealing to work with in the future than their current allies (or their ally’s ally). Lots of pillow talk and plans for a future can be made after a bed is made and the dust is settled. Wars can turn allies into enemies and vice versa, but not being honest and trustworthy will forever be a primary hurdle. Too much backstabbing and lying makes everything infinitely more difficult than it should be.

  24. Not sure it's quite "putting your alliance first" when making a move like that, unless you're alliance favors risks and war. But I agree that reaching across isles is the way to go. Unexpected moves often produce more interesting results. Alliances can get comfortable, it's easier to keep old allies around versus going out to try something new.

  25. Oh bugger off with that, TKR signed a bunch of secret treaties to protect themselves and lied about it so they could pretend they were being "dynamic", then they steamrolled all of the smaller AA spheres who they had a significant advantage, pushing them in the hands of the major rival sphere, then were shocked when those people turned around and dicked them. Then after being rolled for that shit, they still have the nerve to keep a secret treaty with TCW, You want a medal for making a new sphere when the only reason its happening is you just got the shit kicked out of you for being full of it, and you can't even commit 100% to it and drop TCW? Sorry buddy, your leaders are lying to you.

  26. My takeaway and something I've felt since the EoS war on TAC - you don't need the strongest casus belli to start a war. There is nothing shameful in aggression, and it makes the game more competitive. An increase in fighting will serve to increase the value of your pixels far faster than waiting for your next city ever will. Hail to fighting.

As suicides goes, you may be correct. But I may say that at least in Australia the opposite is true. https://pdfs.semanticscholar.org/526a/200e5586c3feaf984027fed9106ff5941a81.pdf And by the way, what I said was something similar to Cesare Becaria. The laws that forbid the carrying of arms are of such a nature. Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.”

  30. First of all, you can get guns via black market, you don't see criminals and drug dealers waiting in line to hand their weapons to the government. Even if those weapons were purchased legally we still must support the right to bear arms, as human brutality is eternal. Better to have a thousand benefits than one imaginary problem. Jesus, on the USA alone you have billions of defensive usage of weapons every year, those people would be dead if they had to relay on the kindbess of the aggressor. You can make homemade bombs with just a few search on the internet, no need to have PhD. The argument that people that commit suicide wouldn't do so in other conditions is ridiculous. As we may see in Australia the rate of suicide by firearms indeed decreased, they are now cutting their wrists or hanging themselves. The principle of having a weapon is to defend yourself against attacks. Giving up your right is a submission and leave you as a prey on a duck hunt season.

You can't really believe that those kids could defend themselves with books. They walk into schools due to being a area that doesn't allow guns, as it is the case in almost every mass shooting in America.

  33. Correct! Having armed guards that can shoot people trying to kill you is a way of keeping you safe. Maybe (and keep with me as it may be hard to follow), maybe if people had guns they would protect themselves as well. In all seriousness why do you guys think there are fire extinguisher in buildings? So you don't need to relay on firefighters while the fire is roasting your nerves.

  34. Again, they state you don't need a gun for protection, yet have people use guns for their protection even with unarmed populaces. Acid is easy to use. I'd imagine the number of people who accidentally spill a drink largely exceeds the number of people who accidentally shoot a gun. Guns are only glamorous because of the gun debate. Explosives are much more lethal and easier to make than a gun, yet guns are chosen as the media won't stop talking about it until the next shooter. Would the government really use mortars against civilians? Would you want to live under a government that uses mortars against civilians? If IRA tactics are used (fire one shot and bail), then wouldn't the entire attack take place within the mortar's OODA?

  36. I want to be led by facts, not emotions, not "what ifs", not speculations. Seeing Reichspakt tells me it's a Kaiserreich fandom, which is a mod for Hoi4, based on the Kaiser leadership of Germany (before it went into fascism). However, seeing their leader with the literal nazi symbolism on his avatar in Discord - well, you can't avoid what his intentions were. To me, it's him instigating to get a rise out of people like you, those who are emotionally led. However, on the flip side, I now know based on the avatar, that this was as close as they could get without getting outright bans. Sheepy doesn't ban based off of Discord, since it's outside of his "jurisdiction". Next "best" thing is to do something that could teeter on that line, which is what we see. That doesn't excuse Pantheon government for working with them, because if they're in communication with them - it's pretty hard to avoid that chosen picture the leader of the alliance has. If they had just stuck to the whole Reichspakt theme, that's not Nazism. Just because it's German, doesn't automatically make it Nazism. But yes, I do agree with the original assessment from the OP now. To me it seems they're edgelords trying to avoid the ban hammer. So condemn them all you want.

  40. BK can complain about secret treaties when they stop shamelessly consolidating power. Unfortunately these days people don't push back on consolidation because its becoming more acceptable thanks to alliances like you. That being said TKR if you have secret treaties again ima stick my foot up your ass.

  41. Lmao so every temprorary ally in a war will be considered now as a secret treaty. I mean like CoS, Test and Ts who went on IQ side in last war propably had some secret treaty with IQ I didn't know then... Sorry I couldn't resist with that joke...

  42. For those of you who enjoyed "secret treaty whining" and "criticizing anyone who actually tries to do anything about the sphere dynamic they purported to found their sphere to combat", the first seven times IQ did it, I have excellent news for you...

  43. Damnit TKR, must you take everything that made us special? First you cramped our style as another fantasy series themed orange alliance, and now you even leak? That was the one thing we were good at...

  44. Leaks help keep the game interesting in my opinion.

  46. Just curious, what do you believe is the solution to government corruption when politicians don't listen to words or ordinary people overtly support politicians in playing favorites when it comes to providing service? I'm just hoping you don't believe in ruggedly individualist libertarianism where you blame the victim in telling the victim if it doesn't like corruption then it can leave.

  47. Should just dump IRC completly. Not even worth keeping around as a legacy method tbh.
