Administrators Popular Post Alex Posted October 15, 2018 Administrators Popular Post Share Posted October 15, 2018 Hey everyone, this is going to be a long post, so bear with me here. First, a couple of housekeeping announcements: @Honey Monster has resigned as a forum moderator. I am very grateful for their help, without the forum moderators I certainly wouldn't be able to keep things civil here by myself. Next, I'd like to introduce a new forum moderator, @Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. who has just signed up to help pick up the additional workload. I have high hopes that they will make a fair and unbiased forum moderator. We will likely be bringing on some other additional forum moderators in the near future as well. My goal is to have a professional team of moderators to ensure everyone has a satisfactory experience on these forums. If you have any particular qualms or grievances regarding forum moderation, please shoot me a PM. --- Geography Update Now, to the meat of this announcement, which is about a significant update to the geography mechanics of the game. Primarily, this update is about a shift to using Google Maps as the map interface in-game, and with it there are some mechanical changes as well. I released a video on the Facebook and Twitter pages about the map update yesterday, feel free to check that out. Instead of picking a point on the map, you get to draw a shape (polygon) This is perhaps the most exciting aspect of this update from a role-play perspective. Instead of an arbitrary colored circle, you will get to draw a polygon made up of up to 20 vertices on the Earth's surface using Google Maps. You'll have a huge degree of customization, including the size of the map display and zoom on your nation page, as well as the color of your borders, fill, and opacity of your nation shape. An example screenshot The area encompassed by your map shape must be less than or equal to the total land area of your nation as defined by the sum of all of the land in your cities. This will prevent arbitrarily large polygons from covering the map. Note, like the circle points previously, nation maps can "overlap", i.e. the area that you draw for your nation is not exclusively "yours". The reason for this is that it would be incredibly complex and difficult to set it up any other way. Antarctica is now a continent option Going with Google Maps, there really wasn't a choice here. You can now draw your nation in Antarctica, and so Antarctica has now been added as its own separate continent with it's own resource distribution (Coal, Oil, and Uranium.) Antarctica can build Farms as well, but instead of having seasonal effects, instead there is a permanent -50% food production penalty. When this update goes live, everyone will get 2 free additional location changes. New nations will start with 3 free changes This should be pretty self-explanatory, you'll have some freedom to play around with the new location options when the update goes live. Cities will now start with 250 sq. miles of land (instead of 20) This will give new players a lot more freedom in drawing their polygon, and hopefully eliminate some of the high population density problems new players often experience early on. The tutorial has been updated to reflect this change; instead of asking players to buy to 520 sq. miles of land, they will now be asked to buy 500 sq. miles of land to reach 750 in their capital city. The World and Nuclear Proliferation maps are updated to Google Maps (as well as Alliance maps) Instead of drawing 200+ polygons on the world maps, instead your nation will be represented as a point (the center point of your nation's polygon) with your national flag on the map. Test server example --- Halloween Tournament To thoroughly test the new geographical changes before they are launched into the live game, we will be hosting a test server tournament starting at 12AM October 17 (server time.) It will run until 12AM on November 11 (server time.) Note that the server does not observe daylight savings time. Standard tournament details can be found on the test server homepage: http://test.politicsandwar.com/ If you are unfamiliar with the test server, it is a copy of the source code of the live server (with some modifications) running on a completely separate database. You will need to create a new account there. A few things to note: The test server does NOT send e-mails. Ever. You do not need a valid e-mail address to play on the test server Having multiple nations is NOT allowed on the test server. You will be banned permanently and prohibited from participating in any future testing/tournaments Registration will be closed 3 days after the tournament has begun. This happens automatically, and you will NOT be able to join the tournament late for any reason. Trading will be disabled until after registration has closed. Alliance banks are disabled for the duration of the tournament. Creating a nation to send all of your money to a friend and then quitting is not considered fair play, and you will be banned. Your nation will be deleted from the test server at some point after the tournament ends. Please do not get too attached. Other details, such as starting Beige time and starting cities, money, and resources are listed on the test server homepage. While the purpose of this particular tournament is primarily to test the robustness of the map update detailed above, there may be some Halloween related tricks/events to be had. I won't say anything further on that point, though I would encourage you to participate in what I anticipate to be a very unique tournament. Winners in the following categories will be recognized in the live server with a nation award: Highest Score Nation Most Wars Won Most Money Looted Most Infrastructure Destroyed Most Nuclear Weapons Launched Largest GDP Nation Largest Land Area Nation The alliance with the highest score at the end of the tournament will also be able to select a flag to be added to the test server permanently. --- I believe that's it. I'm sure I've forgotten some detail or other, so feel free to ask any questions and offer feedback here in this thread. A lot of effort has been put into this update and tournament; I hope you're all as excited as I am! 8 12 Is there a bug? Report It | Not understanding game mechanics? Ask About It | Got a good idea? Not an exact ETA, but once I feel it's been pretty thoroughly tested and any big issues have been fixed, it'll be ready for launch to production. I would estimate somewhere between 2-4 weeks. 4 minutes ago, CitrusK said: The nation idea seems really nice. Now, to make my test server account, so I can have fun there. Mark76
Border/land wars ahoy! Talking of which. Now that our nations will actually have borders, will land become a war prize? Princess Seshat
Wait so does redrawing your nation's polygon count as a location change? If so then you would have to use a location change to expand after you bought more land and cities? If this is the case please make it to where it only requires a location change if it changes your continent Edited October 16, 2018 by Princess Seshat 1 Nebthet Seshat Asetneferu-Meritra Satsekhem Netjeretkhau
