If I don't stand my own ground, how can I find my way out of this maze?

Should we pay reps to John Harms?

On the 27th of March, 2015 (server time), the nation of Gigantasaur, a member of the Socialist International, attacked a member of the mercenary alliance Noir, John Harms of Equaria.

As you can see, in the counter-attack, Gigantasaur was bested by his opponent, who did quite a bit more damage in return than he received in defense.

The Socialist International has been approached, and Noir is seeking $250,000 in reparations for the attack. Logs of the conversation are quoted for your convenience below:

Gigantasaur has started a raid against a member of mine. Please have him declare peace as soon as possible. No reps or anything are needed. I'm sure it's a simple mistake on his part.

Actually, change of heart. He's going to need to pay reps.

normally, the way i do reps for raiding is "send all the money back that you stole and we're good". but he didn't send any money and the damages are pretty minimal. what exactly do you want?

250k would keep him happy and serve as an apology. Pretty much a fart in the wind for you guys.

From: Hereno Date: 03/28/2015 Saturday 12:05 pm

i just went and looked at the war; he did more damage in return than gigantasaur even dished out, and 250k is more than the cost of the damage he did do, not including the attacks back. i'm not making him pay anything.

From: Jodo Date: 03/28/2015 Saturday 12:19 pm [Report Content]

Like I said. It would serve as an apology for an unprovoked attack that he had no reason to launch. The fact he got punched in the mouth for doing so is irrelevant.

Just for clarification, is "No" your final answer? I am open to negotiation after all.

Well, there you have it. A simple disagreement. But, rather than negotiate with Jodo myself, I am opening this discussion to all of the workers of the world. Not just in the Socialist International, but on all of Orbis. Vote for what you think we should do, and the majority vote will be binding on me as a leader. I'll come back some time after the polling has died down and continue the negotiation.

Jodo is right to ask reparations, its the norm when dealing with unprovoked attacks.

So much for being polite and doing this behind closed doors. GG.

A nation of yours attacked a nation of mine for zero reason. I asked for compensation. Thats literally the entire story.

My answer was going to be "no", but I didn't want to screw you over unintentionally. I actually made this thread to make sure I was treating you fairly. If you'd prefer, though, I can ignore the results and simply say "no" like I was going to.

I think this is more fun.

Fair enough. I'll consider my options, and keep this entertaining thread in mind when I do.

Jodo's within his rights to ask for reps. You're within your rights to tell him no and let the chips fall where they may.

I'm with Jodo in this one. Unprovoked attacks require extra punishment. It's obvious Gigantasaur had been raiding left and right and had gotten a lot cocky in his raidings. He attacked a member of another alliance for no reason other than for spare cash. If you ask me, the 250k requested by Noir is entirely justified. It doesn't matter who is hurt more, the fact of the matter is, Gigantasaur raided a member of Noir and will definitely raid again in the near future.

But you achieved truce anyway, so is there a need for this thread?

Truce was declared so that the raider wouldn't be able to hit him any more, and in an attempt to be 'nice' and not damage him in return any further.

Meh its not as if its a long term member, the guy just left GPA in the middle of a war, so I wouldn't make such a big deal of it.

This is the correct answer.

I believe Jodo is being fair here. And the argument against paying reparations because the defending nation did way more damage, is like saying theres no need to apologize to a guy who kicked your ass because you punched him in the mouth.

New member or not, he is still a member of Noir. It has nothing to do with GPA or that war. He's taken his lumps and this occurred after the fact.

Isn't 250K a bit much for 31 infra?

Dumbest thread in a long time. I could go to Africa and ask a 2 year old negro baby and get the right answer to this question.

Pay Jodo, go on with your life. 250k is 1/8 of what I make a day.

For just the infra, yes.

The rest is a way of apology for attacking a protected alliance. Which is also kind of the reason why I Pm'd him instead of going straight to the forums or to Rose.

Normally I'd say reps would be the proper thing to do.

But you're dealing with an AA that likes to work outside the norm and will gladly spy away your stuff for a few coins,it kind of feels like there could be a bit of hypocrisy here.

All that being said, $250k is a pittance. You should all be ashamed for this even getting to the forums.

Voted in favor of Jodo.

I do agree that this should have been kept behind closed doors, it is a simple rep payment where a no or a yes could have been given to the request. I also agree that it seems a bit - off - for a mercenary to ask for reps, but an alliance is an alliance and yall have your own standards of policy.

$250k is chump change - I think holding off negotiations creates an issue that really isn't needed. Throw that $250k towards Noir and call it a day.

Stand your ground and show abrasiveness by educating your members on who to raid and who not to. Simplicity in its finest.

That being said, good luck to both parties - I hope you both reach an agreement swiftly.

A member of a merc alliance should not receive reps. They are infact paid to destroy. If they want reps than skin the beast, or walk away. Do you intend to pay back a contract you attack? That is the life you choose!

While it's true that we are mercs. And yes, we work for profit, and that it's dangerous, the fact of the matter is that at no time had we interacted with or against Soc Internet or their allies. It was completely unprovoked.

I understand that everyone wants to debate semantics. Its fun, and entertaining. By all means, go ahead.

I'm aware this should have been handled behind closed doors. It was, up until Hereno posted it to sway public opinion for whatever reason.

I just a cat looking out for his alliance members.

The way I always treated it was that reps are more of a payment for peace than they are a payment for damages involved.

If you attack someone for no reason, you have caused them damage that is now owed. Your options are to either deal with the consequences of losing that war, or pay for the damage you've dealt (or, obviously, to win - but I've always done my best to make sure that those who raid don't manage that option)

If peace hadn't been reached and Jodo had just had his guys curbstomp Gigantasaur, I would view that as a fair payment for the guy having raided. As it is, though, peace was reached and Equaria (and by extension, Noir) has suffered a loss for no good reason at the hands of your member. There's no reason Jodo shouldn't be able to ask that his member catch up to where he was before.

Also, the total cost of the war to Equaria is $67,111.03 infra in Nakarev, $44,153.32 infra in Ibiersk, $13,396 in soldiers, $327,700 in tanks, $8437 in aircraft. Assuming you're only counting the damages dealt by your nation, and not the aircraft (which is the only loss he suffered by his own attacks), the total I would have charged for reps would have been $452,360.35. 250k seems fair.
