  2. Nearly a month after I put Swing down; here is why. Here’s a peak into the company I ran and why rage finally got the best of me. I’m not releasing this to attempt to ease back into the business sector; this is simply my story on what really happend. Appologies for the wall lf text; this was originally written on 5/27. What Made TOSE Fail? Above and beyond the obvious reasons TOSE is no longer with us - (if you aren’t aware I deleted the entire server and VPS hosting the bot.) there were key reasons that it simply wasn’t sustainable long term. Without a doubt the technology utilized for TOSE is unique and purpose built; it functions beautifully for the basic environment of a virtual stock market. TOSE didn’t fail because of the platform it was built upon; TOSE was going to fail because of several systemic issues. I’m likely the only Swing member that understood the entire issue; and it needs to be broken down into multiple parts to really grasp. First and foremost TOSE was built to generate revenue via brokerage fees; this is fairly standard even in real world investing scenarios; but the controlling entity behind TOSE; The Swing had interests in nearly every facet of the business economy. This immediately creates a conflict of interest. The exchange could not operate without bias; it simply was not possible. Take it one step further; monies from TOSE flowed into the Swing; and more often than not sat there for extended periods of time. Swing was also involved in lending, resource trading and several other income producing verticals; and the funds were almost always commingled. While we didn’t practice very good asset management internally - we always had the money on hand to cover withdrawals from the exchange; but without a doubt we were using TOSE money for loans and loan money for TOSE. For the majority of my tenure at Swing we had at least 10 billion in liquid cash on hand at any given moment — until we didn’t. To compound the imbalance of cash supposedly held in TOSE compared to what we actually had on hand was from what I’ll call over valuation. Over valuation came from long term share flipping and heightened investor confidence. Essentially an investor could buy low, and sell high over and over again — multiply that by the estimated 100 Active traders on the platform; some stocks were increasing in value (well in excess of book) without the cash actually being there to back them up. The cash often didn’t need to be there — investors were making profit, not cashing out; rinsing and repeating - over and over and over. I noticed something interesting when running the SWGB IPO - which sold out incredibly fast; but it generated very little - “new capital” in the exchange. This indicated to me there was a lot of “liquidity” in the market that really didn’t actually exist. For the majority of its existence TOSE ran unregulated. Taith and other companies already indexed were free to create as many companies as they desired — and rarely did they bring fresh new cash into the exchange. Without regulation - many of the companies became highly over hyped and over valued in comparison to their actual book value. Take for instance Top Hat; at the time I imploded TOSE I had just taken over Top Hat. They initially raised about 2 billion in initial capital; and at the time I took it over they had a negative net worth and a negative ESV. A far cry from its value on TOSE. A similar situation ensued with Almighty Corporation; it was consistently over hyped and traded at 8-10x its actual book value. The lack of regulation allowed for some of the issues; and a lack of fiduciary duty on behalf of Swing was to blame for the rest. We knew there were issues; we simply did not correct them. The constant share flipping and over valuation most certainly added to the deficit of what truly existed in the exchange and what we actually had on hand. The last time I checked, TOSE had over $11B in liquid cash in the exchange; and Swing had about $5B in liquid cash. There was never a run in the market; which was a huge fear of mine because I knew if a run was timed right the actual cash wouldn’t be there; especially in the final month or so of TOSE. During the peak of Swing’s lending career we had a near constant flow of repayments into the company and a very low default rate: but it grew and so did the size of the loans; which depleted the cash reserves we had on hand. Tie in a couple of huge setbacks and the environment was ripe for failure. I had already dealt with the setback of losing Benj to family obligations; and I navigated Taiths fall fairly well given the circumstances; but that was an exhausting time too. The day the most recent global war kicked off (early May) Galactic Empire was couped and multiple parties laid claim to their small 1 Billion dollar offshore. Among the drama from that a Swing employee mistakenly sent three $1B dollars payments to inactive nations. That distribution was supposed to send out $1B in total to 15 nations; instead we lost two billion (we got one back) That same day The Alliance was blitzed, causing over $1B in damages and we had to negotiate our way out of the war; which obviously wasn’t cheap. That same day Benj stepped down and appointed me as his successor. The following day Epi tried to lay claim to the same Schrute Farms offshore; losing us another cool billion. We survived that day by the skin of our teeth and decided to reinvent ourselves into a real alliance. I believed that the Alliance could possibly help us to turn more profits and make up for the large losses we had just incurred. But that venture was one step forward and two steps back. With a sudden influx of people in my orbit and a war on the horizon I secured our assets at BLUM; what a horrible choice on my part, because my credentials fell into the wrong hands. A former raider who was brought into the fold to “help” Gabe with Internal affairs wiped out nearly $10B of assets most of which were all marked for investors and safekeeping. This situation was the straw that broke my back. I had been fighting an uphill battle for months now and was not getting much support from my circle. In a moment of rage and disappointment I decided to put The Swing down for good. In my eyes I’d fought enough to keep up this never ending cycle. I may never know the motives of the party to swiped our bank. I have my theories; but they are just that. At the end of the day - I know an exchange can’t operate as a profit center with another multi-dimensional corporation. Centralization of assets poses a large risk to all parties involved. Be it an internal bad actor plotting to swipe the bank, or lazy corporate executives commingling and dipping into funds which they don’t actually own - the risk of loss is great. Combine over valuation and stock flippers; you’ve got a cocktail for disaster. TL;DR: There isn’t one.

  3. I have been wondering if notifications can be tweaked to reduce repetition and redundant text, and improve the organisation and readability of notifications. I present my own ideas about how that might be accomplished in hope that others will chime in with thoughts and contributions. Proposed changes to notifications: Group unread notifications of the same type and date. The unread notifications number displayed on the side menu should still reflect the number of unread events (not the number of unread notifications/grouped notifications) Separate the date and time into separate columns (add another column for time). The width of the first date column can be reduced slightly, and the second time column can be even smaller. Change the date format to day and month name instead, e.g. "14 April". The current date format is almost entirely limited to use in the US and thus makes an unusual choice for an internationally engaged game, confusing to anyone outside the US. Furthermore, day and month shorthand (absent year) is itself an unusual and uncommon date format (at least in my experience). This change would make dates completely unambiguous to players from anywhere. Change the time format to 24 hour time, e.g. "23:44" instead of "11:44 pm". The 24 hour time format has the benefit of being shorter as it drops the need for the meridiem indicator and thus takes up less space, and is logically more consistent as the hour always increments and thus arguably easy and unambiguous to understand. It is also used throughout the world, often a standard in workplaces, and thus familiar to most. Remove the superfluous explanation field at the top of the notification page to reclaim more vertical space. I'm talking about this. It is self-evident what the page's function is and does not require a description. The only arguable value added is that it indicates that each section only shows 125 records. You could however just add this in parentheses to each section header, e.g. "Recent Activity (Last 125 Records)", "System Activity (Last 125 Records)". Though even this is misleading as when I review my notifications page it is clear each section does not show the last 125 records. As such, I would forgo mentioning how many records should be expected in each section (maybe just put it on a wiki page if it's that important to document). It also makes less sense to me to limit notifications by a set number and more if it were the last 7 day's notifications. The general format of grouped notifications would consist of 3 columns; date, time, description: First column; date Date of the grouped notifications. This is vertically expanded from the first row across the rows below so that the date is only presented once and keeps clutter minimal (subsequent rows do not display date again). Second column; time Time of a specific event. The initial notification description (first row) is expanded across the time column and the third description column. Events of the same type are then appended on new rows below with time logged in the time column and description in the third column. Third column; description Describes an event that generated a notification. The initial description for grouped notifications should contain appropriate links on the keywords embargoed, trade, war, aided, and achievements. For example in, "Your nation completed TRADE with:", the word "TRADE" could link to the My Trade Offers page to improve ease of navigation. Likewise EMBARGOED to the list of nations that have embargoed one's nation, WAR to one's war page, AIDED to one's bank activity page, and ACHIEVEMENTS to one's achievements page. Some changes to the way notifications are formatted. See the screenshot included below for examples. Unread grouped notifications are ordered by their last event notification time. Reasons for changes: Reduce repetition and redundant text. More concise. Reduce ambiguity. Improve the organisation and presentation of events of the same type. Improve readability. Reclaim more vertical screen space. Looks better? Please take a look at the screenshot below which I made to help illustrate my ideas on how grouped notifications would look: Image Link (in case it's difficult to properly view on the forum) Because someone will say it if I don't, "This would be low priority for Alex if he even likes it". I think with this approach notifications could look tidier, and I like the idea of grouping the same type of information to make it easier to quickly appreciate who did what. I think, for example, it'd be nice to see attack information grouped and uninterrupted so that one can more easily appreciate the series of attacks their nation was subjected to while they were gone. This approach also just removes some repetition which I think improves readability. I am tempted to argue that with this approach the other sections below Recent Activity on the notifications page could be removed entirely so that the Recent Activity notifications extend the whole page length. Anyhow, awaiting feedback on how silly this is.

  6. Uh, hi If you haven't heard by now there was a War started between Black Skies and RIE. We (Asylum of The Phoenix) joined in that war under the context of the meme "Alan demanded 50m in reps". To us that was a horrible CB 👀 And we had declared the war name as "BS vs. The Micros"... With the new information that was brought to light today between BS Leader and AoTP Leader, we have decided it's in our best interest to Surrender this war with Black Skies. Just goes to show you need to know the full story. And not have war dodgers in your AA lol. Oop. (AoTP doesn't do a DoE, instead we do Surrender post😱)

  7. Black Skies acknowledges the DoW made here and accepts the new alliance into the war.....8 days from now. We also at this time acknowledge the DoWs of all future alliances and in turn all prior alliances. This will allow us to cover our bases on all future wars and all past wars (because we still might see a DoW from an Internet Explorer user for Alanfall). However as seeing this latest war is apparently "Alanfall 3.0" and I haven't fallen yet then there must be a 7.0 or an 8.0 in which maybe I do. I don't know how time travel works as I'm not savvy enough. Who knows maybe they'll go back and make a hotfix to an Alanfall so we can fix the bugs in the dogpiles and "1v1"s. Looking forward to Alanfall v10.3.1. However when they do go back in time. We'll be ready. Probably. 50/50. TL;DR The war between Black Skies and TIE/RIE is now a meme show.

  36. That was a Great War. It was the first, so these things were probably going to happen. The difference between North and South is that South is always a group. That almost always do things together so as a whole, so they pack a punch. North, however, is more separated with quantity. The team is bigger in size. So in the next War: Cube War II, make sure that North can prepare yourself, and your teammates so you can put up a fight. Be more as a group, United we stand, Divided we fall. There was a lot to learn in this first war and I'm proud of everyone to do so well. Remember, observe and plan for the future, like South did. Expect the worst and do everything you can do before-hand to stop it from happening at all. I hope you the best of luck in the next war. #CubeUnited4EVER This was a review I did after watching H's video. I congratulate South Side on being victorious and applaud Team Bee for putting up a great battle. I hope they learn something from this first war and can then better prepare themselves in the future GL n HF
