Americans of P&W, how would your state do if it declared independence?

As a very proud Kentuckian, it saddens me to say that I don't think Kentucky would do to well.

In a combat situation, I believe Kentucky is quite defensible. You have the Ohio river covering a large section of the state's border, and then you have all the mountains- particularly in the east. There's also about 4 million citizens, so you could reasonable mobilize a few hundred thousand fighters. There's plenty of firearms and ammunition everywhere, so at least initially, the newly-formed Armed Forces of Kentucky could engage any invaders. Although realistically, it would probably degrade into guerrilla tactics. Furthermore, our lack of combat aircraft in the Kentucky Air National Guard would put us at a considerable disadvantage.

Economically, I think we would do okay. We could be energy independent thanks to the coal industry- which could be kick-started back into a thriving existence if the need arises. We have plenty of farms and farmers, so I think we could grow or produce enough food to sustain the population. This is further aided by the fact that many Kentuckians do have their own gardens and/or animals that they breed for consumption. In terms of manufacturing, we manufacture plenty of vehicles and could export them along witha few other goods and items, such as bourbon (of course) and maybe even horses. I do think that current (very poor) state that large sections of eastern Kentucky is in, however, would drag us down. I also don't think our economy would grow to large, but we would have the basics down to live in the 21st century just fine.

So, what about the rest of you guys?

MA would fair decent, as the only border state we'd have to really worry about is NY

but we could buddy buddy and rule New England together, as father and son

Massachusetts. They would have trouble producing food in the Winter. The police could probably be the military considering how they handled the Boston terror plot and the Marathon bombings. A lot people have gardens that die in the Winter. We do have good clam chowda that never runs out. Dunkin Donuts would be a major export as well. We would do okay. Also we could conquer Rhode Island the smallest state in the country. Heroine is a problem in North western Mass though. Maybe we could create a profit off of that, even though I would hate that idea. Also, we are the smartest state in the country.

Montana - We'd be alright. Just like Kentucky, we've got plenty of farmers and coal (and some oil). Plus, everyone's got like 300 guns each, it's basically the Texas of the north.

Heroin's a problem over here in north eastern Mass too, but other than that I think we'd be pretty well off.

I live in southeast mass. I'm worried about the next generation even though I'm part of it, the kids are idiots, they are all failing and do drugs. Cocaine mainly. There is  5 Dunkin Donuts in every town. You enter a town, dunkin donuts, a block later dunkin donuts. A minute later Dunkin Donuts, etc. My town has one of the best honor programs in the county.

Amidst the eternal waves of time From a ripple of change shall the storm rise Out of the abyss peer the eyes of a demon Behold the razgriz, its wings of black sheath The demon soars through dark skies Fear and death trail its shadow beneath Until men united weild a hallowed sabre In final reckoning, the beast is slain As the demon sleeps, man turns on man His own blood and madness soon cover the earth From the depths of despair awaken the razgriz Its raven wings ablaze in majestic light

Somewhat boardering Kentucky just to the west here in Missouri, we'd be alright I think. Even though we are land locked, we the Mississippi River that runs our entire eastern boarder so our commerce from Canada to New Orleans would be good. We have plenty of farmers and plenty of guns. Also, as the countries leading producer of meth, our entertainment is also well covered.

Also as a Kentuckian, we could take over Ohio and Indiana with ease. Further expanding the Kentucky empire.

Good luck crossing the Ohio River after we blow the bridges up and turn Evansville and Bloomington into fortresses. You won't leave the mountains, so just stick with becoming the world capital of moonshine and weed production. Edited by Obongo The Mighty

@vlad- you can have mass, because we most likely dont want anything to do with the red sox.

@Strum- ya the city will not do well in an independent New York but it will most likey become our capital and they will be happy with that.

We'd probably quickly become a theocracy followed by a series of genocides against gay people coupled with race wars due to an attempted to return to being a slave state. Also we would probably declare war on Iran as well as seven or eight other Muslim countries because Jesus.

-Arkansas.

If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a roll.

There is one you will follow. One who is the shining star, and he will lead you to beautiful places in the search of his own vanity. And when there is no more vanity to be found, he will leave you in darkness, as a fading memory of his own creation.

Kentucky made the list of "States most dependent on the federal government" at #3

http://wallethub.com/edu/states-most-least-dependent-on-the-federal-government/2700/

For the record: I'm from Massachusetts. We're #8 in the "least dependent on the federal government" list.
