Kim Jong-Il
If you hadn't seen already, just about 12 hours ago, the CEO of reddit had removed and banned some certain subreddits, most of which didn't matter, but one of them had over 150k followers. Doing this has gone against Reddit's well-known policy of having freedom of speech no matter what. After the subreddit got removed, just about all of the rest of reddit blew up against the CEO, Ellen Pao, and she had just recently wiped most of those threads aimed at her. How do you think reddit will continue, now that all of this has happened? Do you agree with the changes? Do you oppose them? Lu Xun
There are other websites for these types of below the board operations, and Reddit seems to want to achieve a sort of respectability. As an ex-/b/tard, Reddit's always seemed to be a relatively white-bread / pedestrian website compared to what goes on down below. If you note that Reddit apparently hosted CP posters as well as other more nefarious types of online behavior, there is a real incentive for a Top 50 Alexa website to want to clean up. The Internet is a very big place, and if you need to host a server in Japan or Hong Kong with enhanced data privacy, alongside support for darker Internet behaviors, you don't need to do it on Reddit. Tim Armstrong
If you hadn't seen already, just about 12 hours ago, the CEO of reddit had removed and banned some certain subreddits, most of which didn't matter, but one of them had over 150k followers. How do you think reddit will continue, now that all of this has happened? Do you agree with the changes? Do you oppose them? My sense is that it will not have much effect on reddit's audience as most people are still able to interact with reddit as they always have. A few people will probably swear it off and then find their way back eventually. People will remember this for a long time though and overall reddit's image and brand has taken a hit as a result of this. It's more likely that there will be more meaningful consequences on reddit as an organization though. Why does someone go to work for a place like reddit? Often it is because they feel strongly about the mission, vision, values, and culture of the organization. When the CEO undermines the company's core like this it can have negative, long-term effects on the people who make up the lifeblood of the company, which leads to lost productivity, increased staff turnover, and lower employee engagement. The board should probably fire Pao and replace her with a public relations guru who can ensure to protect the company's image (both internally and externally)by staying true to its core values. I oppose the removal of said subreddits. If people don't want to read them then people shouldn't read them.

Lu Xun
I think the point of Reddit was always that people needed a 4chan that they could bring up to their boss without getting summarily fired. Reddit wants to be white bread, that's fine; there's a market for a sort of semi-edgy social media website that can be respectable, just as there's a market for revenge porn websites, troll havens, and Internet hate machines. If people don't like Ellen Pao's management, they should start their own Reddit clone with looser moderation, jailbait collections in the back office, and people ranting about women and minorities. Why, that's more or less 4chan without the weeaboo culture, you know? 1 Quote .

naTia
^ Sums up what I think of everyone whining about "censorship." Everyone who's threatening to leave Reddit: leave. Good riddance. While the anecdote is cute, is does not do itself any good in comparing general discontented feedback to a straight up ban. As well, by definition, it is the "suppression of speech, public communication or other information which may be considered objectionable, harmful, sensitive, politically incorrect or inconvenient as determined by governments, media outlets, authorities or other groups or institutions", also known as censorship The problem that people are seeing in this is that it goes against the principles of Reddit and many Redditors in how the site is understood as a whole. It is understandable that Subreddits can moderate themselves, and that the site has the power to determine what is against its own policies, but this sort of massive censorship, which it definitely is, shows a very hypocritical action, considering the existence of many other questionable Subreddits. No, the criticism isn't that they were "mean" or could be "offensive" to people. As well, brigading on the part of FPH was not encouraged by the sub nor was it stated by any moderator or other highly upvoted post. Even less so, it was definitely not "a systematic pattern of brigading". In fact, r/pcmasterrace did a legitimate systematic pattern of brigading and they were only banned for a day, and you would believe that FPH got banned not because of the hatespeech? You could even argue that FPH got more brigading than it dished out. On a constant basis, FPH experienced comments, threads, and mass downvoting targeted at posts. This brigading of "a subreddit dedicated to help people who are suicidal" looks more like hurtful comments on one post than a barrage of subreddit-wide brigading. Opinions are not limited to their respective subreddits, on both sides of the equation. This is certainly not as one way as you make it seem. Even if it is harassment, it is still free speech it still falls under free speech. You don't see the government arresting Wesboro Baptist Church when they picket funerals, do you? Edit: Should elaborate that the last point is a retort to the comic in that it falls under the issue of free speech, even if it is not constitutionally protected. Well, I'm mocking the "discontented feedback" to the ban. I have yet to hear a compelling reason that a private website banning of a hate-filled, vitriolic community is not within their interest. All I hear from many apologists in Reddit is that Ellen Pao is a c*** and deserves to die. Or has no one actually gone to r/all lately? It's a combination of the two (harrassment/hate and brigading/doxing). My comment was aimed at your attempt to say "but what about r/whatever!" Because r/whatever may have done the former, but not the latter. That comment is typical in trying to absolve FBH by diverting attention to other unsavory subreddits. If it were up to me, those other racist and bigoted subreddits should also be banned. I'm sure Stormfront would welcome the new members there. And again, you're harping on "free speech" when that's irrelevant for a private website. What the US govt. would or would not do with WBC is irrelevant here. Those FPH exiles are more than free to host their own Reddit alternative and keep to themselves there. Maybe then I can go back to enjoy my cat videos or !@#$posting on r/NFL or r/Soccer. Lu Xun
http://www.theverge.com/2015/7/15/8967477/doxxing-reddit-yishan-wong-ellen-pao-steve-huffman-alexis-ohanian owned, reddit trolls. Former Reddit CEO Yishan Wong is feeling salty about his former employer, and he's letting the world know it. In the wake of Ellen Pao's resignation last Friday, Wong accused co-founder Alexis Ohanian of planning controversial changes to the site and then throwing Pao under the bus when Reddit took heat for them. And now Wong is airing more of the company's secrets — including the assertion that Pao was, astoundingly, the last line of defense for the vicious trolls who wanted to get her fired. On Tuesday, new Reddit CEO Steve Huffman — Ohanian's other half — announced that the company would reveal possible changes to how it deals with some of the site's nastiest communities. In the announcement, Huffman claimed that "neither Alexis nor I created Reddit to be a bastion of free speech," setting Reddit's censorship-averse zealots off in a renewed frenzy, and with good reason; Ohanian in particular has extolled Reddit as a bastion of free speech. In a comment left on Huffman's announcement, Wong attacks Huffman's claim, alleging that he was perfectly willing to eradicate controversial content in the past. "Back when I was running things, if there was anything racist, sexist, or homophobic I'd ban it right away," Huffman allegedly told Wong at the height of controversy during Wong's tenure as CEO. In fact, Wong claims that Reddit's leaders have been pushing for some time to ban the site's most controversial communities, and that Pao, ironically, was the one keeping them alive. "The most delicious part of this is that on at least two separate occasions, the board pressured [Pao] to outright ban all the hate subreddits in a sweeping purge," Wong wrote. "She resisted, knowing the community, claiming it would be a shitshow," Wong continued, claiming that Pao was inclined to uphold the policies Wong put in place. (For more on those policies, see Wong's barn burner of a blog post from last September: "Every man is responsible for his own soul.") And why is this so "delicious?" Only because Pao has been the subject of monstrous rage from a coalition of Reddit users who made her out to be an apocalyptic tyrant of censorship. "She is literally Silicon Valley's #1 feminist hero." Wong claims that Pao would have been the perfect defender for Reddit's trolls especially considering her recent legacy as a gender discrimination crusader. "What all the white-power racist-sexist neckbeards don't understand is that with her at the head of the company, the company would be immune to accusations of promoting sexism and racism," Wong wrote. "She is literally Silicon Valley's #1 feminist hero, so any 'SJWs' would have a hard time attacking the company for intentionally creating a bastion (heh) of sexist/racist content." That assumption is obviously debatable, but Wong seems unambiguous about a more crucial point: Reddit's good old boys' club won't be the mighty defender of unlimited speech that the site's revolting users had hoped for. "Now she's gone," Wong wrote, "and [Huffman] has the moral authority as a co-founder to move ahead with the purge. We tried to let you govern yourselves and you failed, so now the man is going to set some rules. Admittedly, I can't say I'm terribly upset." As for his own future prospects? Wong isn't terribly optimistic. "I'm probably unhireable now," he wrote. "I'm pretty sure no one will ever hire me as CEO or any other executive position again." Quote .
