Actor Alan Rickman, known for films including Harry Potter, Die Hard, Truly Madly Deeply and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, has died at the age of 69.

The star was suffering from cancer, his family said.

He became one of Britain's best-loved acting stars thanks to roles including Professor Snape in the Harry Potter films and Hans Gruber in Die Hard.

He also won a Bafta Award for playing the Sheriff of Nottingham in 1991's Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.

A family statement said: "The actor and director Alan Rickman has died from cancer at the age of 69. He was surrounded by family and friends."

Well that sucks!  He was truly a great actor.  I think my favorite role of his was in Robin Hood.

[the Sheriff has said he'll cut out Robin Hood's heart with a spoon]

Guy of Gisborne: Why a spoon, cousin? Why not an axe?

Sheriff of Nottingham: Because it's DULL, you twit. It'll hurt more.

Classic.....purely classic!

Absolutely loved him in Dogma

I'd only seen him in harry potter previously so that was a surprise!

We all must question ourselves about how we are raising our children, when they only know Alan Rickman thru the Harry Potter films and not from the greatest Christmas movie ever made.

Hans survived the fall off the Nakatomi building? :o

Loved Alan Rickman, one of my fav actors.  Other than the masterpiece Die Hard that he is terrific in, one of my favs is the little film Quigley Down Under.  First German than Aussie, man is from everywhere.

There are no men like me, there is only me

I'm going to have to watch Quigley Down Under, I've never heard of it until today. You guys have piqued my interest.

In that case also check out his role as the infamous monk, Rasputin.

This really made me sad. He was one of my favorite actors and he was a good guy as far as I know. Sad to hear it all ended by cancer and not old age. Guess that's life though, throws you curveballs when you don't want them.
