Americans of P&W, how would your state do if it declared independence?

Honestly the only state that really stands a chance is Texas. Not only does it have a good economy but it also has a coast line and if it did secede then I think a few other states would follow. As it stands though I believe Texas is the only state to survive on its own. Other states would need to secede in groups to survive.

(I am not from Texas)

Explain why states like California or even New York would need to secede in a group to survive?

I agree. California is a Top 10 economy. We have natural barriers (ocean, mountains, desert) surrounding us on each side. We also have a strategic trade location with Asia, and we have tons of agriculture. If our drought is solved, then this is possible. (On top of that, we have 4 huge ports: San Diego, Long Beach, San Pedro, and San Fran). Oh, and I forgot about Silicon Valley. And tourism. And Hollywood. And.... Weeeed!

Droughts aren't even much of an issue, desalination and importing water from other countries (even the U.S.) would be very easy. Just expensive.

Because in my opinion both California and New York would not survive without the rest of the Union. California and New York both rely on the U.S. Government to much for funding (as well as a majority of the U.S.). Honestly the only way for a state to survive is if a group splits off otherwise the Federal Government will invade and will force the state to rejoin. And quite frankly no state has enough people willing to secede for it to work anyway.

I've read multiple places that California's economy on its own ranks in the top 20 in the world. We provide the country with a great deal of agricultural production. The rest of the states rely on us as much as we rely on them.

As has been mentioned, water is currently a problem, but given the right incentive, I don't think finding an efficient desalinization process is that far out of the realm of possibility if we needed to.

If we are talking about which state could successfully win a 1v1 against the rest of the U.S. in order to become independent then no state could become independent it isn't possible. Now if a state somehow became independent peacefully, then California would do fine. It actually pumps more money into the U.S. then the U.S. pumps into it. Same with even New York and a few other states (including as you said Texas). I think you are being to unrealistic with how much some states actually rely on the government. As for saying that the U.S. would turn around and just invade a state after letting it peacefully secede would be a diplomatic nightmare for the U.S. on an international front. As for that last line if we looked that far into it then we wouldn't have any fun speculating the rise of a Kentucky empire on the first page.

Don't know how the states would do, but I have been told the Hawaiian Kingdom would dominate.

Oh Gods, please don't let <he who shall not be named> notice this reply. ._.

I also feel like we're all now on some federal watch list. >_>

Also as a Kentuckian, we could take over Ohio and Indiana with ease. Further expanding the Kentucky empire.

Except indiana has manufacturing of vehicles, guns, missiles, and more people. Theres an airforce and a serious economy. Most hoosiers have arsenals of weapons and love using them so good luck

California would do perfectly fine without the fed. In fact if Cali left it'd be the 13th largest economy in the world. We'd have a pretty good defense, too.

lol cali would be bankrupt and dirt poor in a quarter of a generation if it doesnt burn t the ground as it is

I think it is time for us to pack up our stuff and get the hell out of this country before it is to late.......

Amidst the eternal waves of time From a ripple of change shall the storm rise Out of the abyss peer the eyes of a demon Behold the razgriz, its wings of black sheath The demon soars through dark skies Fear and death trail its shadow beneath Until men united weild a hallowed sabre In final reckoning, the beast is slain As the demon sleeps, man turns on man His own blood and madness soon cover the earth From the depths of despair awaken the razgriz Its raven wings ablaze in majestic light

WA would dominate the northwest of the US, We'd probably convince Oregon to join us, and Annex Idaho and Western Montana as buffer zones, along with parts of Northern California and BC to the north, and with Boeing being here we could manufacture 1000000000 bombers to flatten anything that tries to !@#$ with us.

Mississippi here. Militarily we'd be alright, as we have access to a large airforce base and one of the most commonly used training sites, so we would have some experienced national guard to cover the state I'd think. Our nearest competitor would be Texas in this regard. Of course it's just a matter of having the manpower and equipment to validate using those bases/training sites.

Economically, we'd struggle, at least for awhile. Mississippi is one of the most dependent nations, financially speaking. However, if we declared independence, we could fix this with our potential trade goods value of lumber, cotton, agriculture, etc. Plus we have lots of farm land to provide for ourselves. We're also in a strong position to hold down any trade/travel down the Mississippi River to the Gulf and Midwest/Northern states.

As long as we don't piss off too many gun-toting neighbors, we'd do just fine.

We have guns.

We have our own power grid.

We mine uranium.

We have the only facility in the USA that can dismantle nuclear devices.

We have engineers.

We have a large population.

!@#$ California.

God bless Texas.

I may be moving to NC soon. !@#$ that state.

Question, what state is the worst in the country?

If DC was a state, it would be. Not because of the politicians, though.

If Texas became independent, illegal immigration would stop.

Damn straight.

If the US looses California we loose over 10% of our national population.

Right Wingers hate "Commiefornia" because it brings in lots of those drarkies they hate so much from south of the border so they can run one of the most productive agriculture sectors in the country really cheaply.

I mean yeah basically, but unfortunately that second part of the sentence is true. It's just hanging a chandelier on a major issue that stems from illegal immigration. The influx of immigrants who drive down wages and steal jobs from working-age natives is damaging everyone but the employer, who profits from the reduced cost of labor. If anything, that's an abuse of the capitalist system by lax immigration, and hardly something for a "left-winger" to hold against people to the right.

No. california is so debt laden the entire us is affected. Californians created a horrible place to live and routinely move elsewhwere spreading their liberalism and socialism acrossed the country. If god existed california would be set ablaze in forest fires and likely suffer a drought, ideally in the winter time snow in the mountains would keep californians trapped in their own shithole to die in the excrement they so lavishly spread over their food. Lets all mourn not having watermelons in the WINTER ;'( maybe if the state rose up and burned sacremento, la, sf, oakland, sj, and for good measure san diego the state could redeem itself by not voting for !@#$ing communists to be president.

Edit: there is truley nothing wrong with immigrants comig here to work hard and carve a living out of the dirt. Thats more american than most americans are these days.

You assume that the, upon declaration of secession, the US Government would just pull out its military and be like "okay cool bye" and leave the bases intact.

Texas has Fort Sam Houston, where all medical training is done for all branches.

Lackland AFB, which is the training center for Airman Recruits, and several flight wings as well.

Since San Antonio has both of those bases, and a few more, it's safe to say the entire city would be completely wiped off the map if this were to happen.

That said, as of February 15th 2015, Texas ranked #11 when compared to the GDPs of other nations.

We have Samsung and various other technological companies. We have cattle. We have agriculture. We have a massive coastline. We have oil. Texas would be able to survive on its own for several years.

and we also have the best tacos and the best BBQ.
