A better example to use would have been Cromwell's Commonwealth which while technically a republic of sorts where anybody could be in the top job, he chose his inept son over better candidates. Early Ancient Rome was an elective monarchy, for example, and the title of Holy Roman Emperor was another for a time. A modern example would be the Pope, which is most definitely not an inherited title but passes on through election. Tanistry is another system whereby monarchs can change without having a hereditary component. A successor is designated and whomever that successor is takes over after the current monarch dies, and the successor need not have a blood tie to that monarch. In practice, the difference between an absolute dictatorship with sole authority vested in the dictator and an absolute monarch with sole authority vested in the monarch is one of title and not one of distinction.
