Terrorist vs. Freedom Fighter?

If fire fighters fight fire, and crime fighters fight crime, what do freedom fighters fight?

-George Carlin

That being said, a freedom fighter is a person who is part of an organized group fighting against an illegitimate/cruel/unfair government/system. With any combination possible. Terrorism is the method in which this fight is taking place. Some freedom fighters are peaceful such as Ghandi.

The man was too far ahead of his time, that is why they had to kill him and Bill Hicks.

"One man's freedom fighter is another man's terrorist" to quote the classic cliche.

If you want to be cynical the Freedom Fighter is often the terrorist who won, that said Freedom Fighters don't necessarily use terrorist tactics. The farmers of Llangyndeyrn didn't use force of arms to fight for their homeland, more force of charecter.

At the end of Lord of the Rings you get the fantastic chapter called "scouring of the Shire" in which Frodo and the other hobbits put what they have learnt to good use. Frodo has this to say about fighting for the freedom of the Shire "Nobody is to be killed at all if it can be helped. Keep your tempers and hold your hands to the last possible moment". I think this is at the heart of the freedom movement ideal, violence should always be the last resort - this is something that Nelson Mandela states in his book "the long road to freedom".

So we can all agree terrorism is a form of fighting for freedom. Eg Nelson Mandela in 1960s SA. Or Taliban in 1980s

Caliph of The Caliphate of Arabia. Caliph of the Islamic State of Arabia. Principle of The Principality of Chechnya. Grand Emir of The Emirate of The Caucus. Emperor of the Empire of Persia. Sultan of The Sultanates of Turkey and The Crimea. Czar of the Tsardom of The Balkans. Archon of The Archonate of Greece. Supreme Consul of The Consulate of Italy. Shah of The Shahdom Of Khorason

Percieved freedom I think would be a better way of putting it. The Bolsheviks were supposedly bringing freedom yet their regime was just as stifling as the Tsar's regime. Freedom fighter is usually a term bandied around by those in charge.

I could say Mandela was a terrorist and I would be right

I could also say he was a freedom fighter and i would be right.

For once everyone agrees on something

Come on, we all know that you have to be a Muslim in order to be classified as a Terrorist.

Bullshit and you know it. Mandela and the Irish Militants weren't and aren't Muslim

One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter. Shit on me as much as you want but I respect Al Qaeda for their balls even if I don't like what they did.

I'm having trouble with this.

Explain how they were freedom fighters from a positive pov and who would see them as freedom fighters? I mostly concerned about what sort of freedom they were fighting for and if it ultimately was a negative freedom (ability to murder/rape freely) or a positive freedom.

You respect Al Qaeda for attacking America? I guess you could see it as them having big balls but on the other hand people from that region are quite ignorant. It seems more likely their blind faith made them arrogant of the reality in the world, I think it was less big balls and more delusions that drove them.

I admire the taliban for defeating the soviets in the 80's however i see no sense in 911 as it led to their government being destroyed

What?

The FSA are the legitimate representation of Syria. I have tribe members who settled in Syria and Iraq I've heard they are fighting for the rebels.

Down with The Alewife Dictatorship. May Allah guide this who represent Syria and Islam

I'm sure people look back on the Taliban as being freedom fighters and even though the soviets weren't by any means the good guys they were certainly the lesser of two evils. The only positive thing behind the Taliban winning was for the West's cold war with the soviets.

Not a lot changed in that way, even today the west backs crap countries.

Are you off your rocker?

The Soviets bombed any areas they considered to be non socialist. They assassinated the Afghan King and then assassinated the next ruler until a socialist came to power. They killed around 300,000 civilians!

they are the lesser of the two evils?!

Al-Asaad is the true Representative of Syria. The US should have never been involved in the first place.

The Free Syrian Army doesn't exist as a unified "coalition" of rebels. They're all religious fanatics who have done more damage than good. Let's also not forget that most of FSA's ranks are swelled with foreign fighters, NOT SYRIANS.

The Mujahideen were rapists, murders and generally vile people much like how people from the region are now. Just barbaric people.
