View the WC groups, fixtures & results here CUP FORMAT: There are four groups, and each team will play the other teams in its group once. The top two teams from each group will advance to the Knockout Stages There are no draws in FOFA, so there should not be any ties. However, in the event of a tie, the tiebreaker will be head-to-head record DIFFERENCES FROM CHALLENGE MATCH PLAY: As this is the World Cup, all games are played at neutral locations. There is no home-field advantage in the sim for these games (even for Phintopia, the host nation). The "home" and "away" designations in the fixtures list are just formalities. World Cup matches will count towards a team's rating, and form can still be gained and lost by playing in the World Cup. Will we see an underdog get hot at the right time and win it all? MATCH TIMELINE AND RESULTS: I will post the match results in this thread. For the group stages, I will sim 8 matches per day. Once we are in the knockout rounds, I will sim one round per day (quarterfinal, then semifinal, then consolation match, then final). The first matches will be simmed tomorrow, and the World Cup should run for nine days total, starting tomorrow. I'M NOT IN THE WC - HOW CAN I PARTICIPATE? If you are not participating in the World Cup, you can still get involved with our TOURNAMENT PICK 'EM CONTEST. If you've ever filled out a March Madness bracket, this is very similar. Nicklas Posted May 23, 2015 Author Share Posted May 23, 2015 (edited) How the groups were drawn The top four teams were each seeded into four different groups The bottom four teams were then seeded into the groups, with the lowest team being put into a group with the highest team (e.g. 20 & 1) The remaining three spots in each group were filled through a random, equally-weighted lottery Group Preview Group A: Imperial Russian FCMWK's Zlatan FCPigSkinPhintopiaCothroime The strongest team in the world, Imperial Russian FC, draws into a group where none of the other teams are within 100 rating points. On paper, the only team that should really give any sort of challenge to the Russians is Mid-Western Korea, but Russia should cruise to an easy group stage victory here. The battle will then be for second place, as we have a trio of Original Ten teams as well as the newest team in the world, Cothroime. MWK is the class of that remaining group of teams, but PigSkin is a former FOFA rank #1 as well, and could possibly do some damage if they heat up at the right time. The hosts, Phintopia, probably wish for a better group draw than this one, but perhaps the boost of playing on your own soil can help them out. As for Cothroime, they are happy to be in the competition, but will be hard pressed to get anything going against these teams in their group. Group B: Hero-Shima's Crystal PalaceIndo-FroschtiaDutchCammoraBrittish Empire This is an interesting group, as it has a former three-time Rank #1 (Hero-Shima) as well as a number of up-and-coming teams. Hero-Shima is a much stronger side than any other in its group, having recently spent three days atop the world table. There really shouldn't be too much challenge posed to them by any of the other teams in Group B. What makes this group interesting is that none of the other teams top 400 rating, so we are guaranteed to see at least one relative underdog in the knockout stages. Dutch - which has heated up as of late and rattled off a number of big wins in challenge play - is looking to prove that it can hang with the top teams in the world. Indo-Froschtia and Cammora are each bids to sneak into the knockout round if either one can score a win against Dutch or Hero-Shima. The world would love to see Brittish Empire make a run in this tournament, but it looks like they are just too underpowered against the other teams in their group to make any noise. Group C: Empire of ArmeniaRageNassckonia United SoccerResvernasTerpistan Empire of Armenia is the darling of the world. Once a perpetual bottom-feeder in the days of the Original Ten, the club has had a remarkable turnaround in recent days, currently sitting at the number three spot in the world table. Their torrid performance has earned them one of the top seeds in the group draw, but they unfortunately have one of the strongest group draws of any of the top four seeds. Resvernas and Nassckonia are both top ten teams, and Resvernas especially is not a side to be taken lightly, especially if they are able to rattle off some wins and go on a hot streak. Rage has been playing well as of late, but is still not quite as strong as the other teams in the division, and so is a long-shot to come out of this group. Finally is the curious case of Terpistan, the former two-time world number one that is now languishing at the bottom of the table. The team's confidence is shot when compared to the glory days of its past, but champions think of winning as riding a bike - it's something they never forget how to do, no matter how bleak the odds seem. Group D: Liber Freedom EaglesWallachiaNorma Jean's FC Arrgh!German EmpireLantean King Lascray of Liber is enamored with football, and he has poured millions of dollars from the nation's coffers into ensuring that the Freedom Eagles will be competitive for the World Cup. The result has been a tremendous improvement to the team's overall strength, as Liber is now one of the stronger sides in the world on paper. Their main competition in this group will be Norma Jean's FC Arrgh!, a former top-three team that always seems to show up in games where they are the underdogs. Aside from Liber and FC Arrgh!, the Germans, Wallachia, and Lantean round out this group. Wallachia is an Original Ten side that was always sort of in the middle of the pack, and probably won't make it out of this group. The Germans play extremely well in front of their home fans - some of the loudest in the world - but all WC games are played on neutral territory, so that advantage will be quelled quite a bit. Lantean is also in this group, yet firmly in the "happy to be here" territory. Best of luck to all the teams! Matches will be simmed starting tomorrow! There are 8 games simmed per day in the group stages, and we have only played two days so far. Everyone in FOFA is in the tournament right now. The group stage is not single-elimination. Re: challenges - the games are already scheduled (look in the Fixtures tab of the spreadsheet). Hopefully this clears things up, but let me know if there are questions.
