Popular Post Indger
Hello everyone! Gather around, because it’s time once again for Orbis to celebrate the annual PnW Academy Awards! For those unfamiliar, the PnW Awards are a community event, organized by members of the community to reflect on and commemorate the past year. This tradition has been a part of our history since 2016, evolving in various forms over time. And now, I’m thrilled to announce the 2024 edition of the awards! As always, we’ve welcomed many new faces to the game this year who might not yet know how the process works. To help everyone join in on the fun, here’s a quick guide to explain how it all goes down. There are a few changes so be sure to give it a read so you don’t miss a thing: Spoiler The PnW Academy Awards work by combining traditional player voting with alliance representative voting to equalize the voting field between alliances of all sizes. There are three rounds to this process: Round 1: Nominations Nominations this year will begin on Tuesday, January 14 and will last until Monday, January 20. All players, as well as alliance representatives, will be invited to participate in the nominations. Alliance representatives are not allowed to nominate their own alliance. Alex/Sheepy may not be nominated for alliance/player categories. The Academy Awards reserves the right to refuse incorrect (to the category) nominations (e.g. a player that did NOT start playing in 2024 being nominated for “Best New Player 2024” will be dismissed.) Round 2: Shortlisting The shortlisting process will take place with the alliance representatives and will start on Thursday, January 23 and will last until Sunday, January 26. The goal of this round is to shortlist each category to 10 candidates. Alliance representatives will be allowed 3 votes per category. Alliance representatives are not allowed to vote for their own alliance. Round 3: Final Voting The final voting will take place from Thursday, January 30 and will last until Monday, February 3 with both the players and the alliance representatives. This will be using the shortlist of 10 nominees for each category. Alliance representatives will be allowed 1 vote per category and are, once again, not allowed to vote for their own alliance. There are separate awards for the alliance representative vote, and the players vote.. All results from the entire process will be shared publicly for transparency. A change from previous years is that this time the voting by the players will be done in-game instead of being done here on the forums. The Awards Ceremony The Awards Ceremony is estimated to take place on Sunday, February 2nd and the winners will be posted on the OWF shortly thereafter. More details regarding the ceremony will be shared later on within the awards process with a confirmed date and hosts. Alliance Voting Component Rules Spoiler The top 60 alliances with the highest scores that are not an offshore, training alliance, or a sister alliance will qualify for a vote. If a war is still occurring when qualifying alliances are selected, the top 60 qualifying alliances from both before the war and during it will be included for the sake of fairness, which means more than 60 alliances may initially qualify to vote. Alliances outside of the top 60 highest scores and want to participate should DM a member of the organizing committee on discord for more information. Alliances cannot nominate nor vote for themselves. Alliance representatives do not have to be the leader of an alliance but they do have to belong to the alliance they represent. They may be any member of the alliance that the alliance deems an adequate representative. This member may also not be on the Organising Committee for the Academy Awards. Alliance representatives are encouraged to consult with the remainder of their alliance's gov (and/or membership) when nominating and/or voting. Alliance representatives will receive their own channel on the Awards discord, in which a passcode will be shared. This passcode serves as a safeguard against the document leaking and will need to be included on their ballot in order for their nominations/votes to count. Kastor
Pretty bad grouping. Could we add 2 people to the committee or could a TKR person step aside? Velyni just joined Rose, so it’s pretty one sided in terms of how people see the game. Could we either expand the committee +2 or swap out a TKR person? there is no “smaller” perspective, all just top 4-5 alliances. as a former host(x2) I’ll offer to join. But I would think a little more variety would be better here. 1 4

To be fair historically, Jesus himself could rise again and host the awards and one half the community would still say the awards are biased and needs to lean more towards [insert group]’s favor. Kastor is obviously right that if the goal is avoiding sphere/alliance bias the committee should be limited to one person from any specific alliance. That doesn’t need to be the goal though. The awards will be biased in some way as long as player run them. No way around that. They are just for fun anyway, and isn’t half the fun of the awards the bickering in the comments ; )
Mayor
Attacking the integrity of both the awards and TKR's representation is a time-honored PnW academy awards tradition.

But I would think a little more variety would be better here. I do agree that the committee would be improved by adding somebody from a smaller alliance. It would be useful to have their input in designing categories for awards for micros and nanos, which was a concept that was considered for this year, but ultimately scrapped due to lack of consensus on how to cleanly present the categories. Someone from a smaller alliance would certainly help with that. I will say that Adrienne and Indger both contribute greatly to the awards, and I believe that the committee would be worsened by losing either of them. Generally speaking, I don’t believe that there is much opportunity for them to institute a pro-TKR bias in the awards due to how so much of the actual work is before everything begins. It is easy to see how having people from varying types of alliances can help, but I do not believe that having a t$ vs TKR vs Rose member, for example, would bias the awards from that perspective. There is precedent in expanding the committee - this is my first year as a member, and last year was Velyni’s first year. However, there have never, as far as I know, been public calls to apply to join the committee. Perhaps that is something that could be done for next year, although I would worry about only people from large alliances applying, thus defeating a large amount of the purpose of this.
Sketchy
What does the committee even do? I thought they just managed things. It's still alliance reps right? Does the committee actually do anything that would influence the outcome?
