Capitol Riot Discussion thread

Recommended Posts

I'm going to dip my toe into OOC discussion here and see what happens. I don't see a thread on this and I feel like it was a big enough deal to warrant one.

  • protesters in DC broke into the Capitol building while Congress was in session - specifically while they were certifying the electoral votes for the next President.
  • protesters beat, at least, one cop to death on film. Damaged or stole property. Caused the Senate and House to be evacuated to some bunker somewhere. At least one rioter was shot and later died after trying to charge through a doorway full of police/security.
  • multiple people filmed/photographed with guns wandering the Capitol. Multiple people photographed/filmed with handcuffs/ropes/zipties/restraints wearing "tactical" gear.
  • bombs [maybe accelerants?] were reported found at the scene.

How did a protest/Trump rally turn into a violent mob rushing a federal government building?

What would have happened if they got in quicker or Congress hadn't been evacuated in time?

Why did anti-mask sentiment run so deep that they didn't cover their faces?

I'm of the belief that the current President did fan the flames of what happened, with the discussion of "fighting" and how the protestors can affect change, specifically "We're going to march down to the Capitol."  While I understand the House Republican angle of "That's still free speech and he didn't directly incite the conflict", Guliani referring to "We're going to have trial by combat" definitely pushed things over the line into incitement.

To me, the incident at the Capitol was indeed domestic far-right terrorism, and needs to be curbed.

In regards to the argument that Democrats were supporting the looting of businesses and destruction in the BLM protests, no.  There were leftists and protestors who did condone such looting - usually as an argument of "They've taken so much from us that we're just taking back what is ours", but those were not democrats; those were lefties who are often as opposed to House Dems as conservatives!  And I say this as one of those leftists.

In regards to the idea that the Capitol riot was pushed by Antifa... that's a pure conspiracy theory with no basis in fact.  Many of the most prominent arrested, incl the guy with the odd fashion sense, are well known in the Qanon community as members of said community.

I fail to understand what other riots have to do with legality or morality of any other riot. Maybe I'm in the minority but I'm very tired of deflection as a talking point. I get viscerally annoyed at this point when discussing politics and the only response you can glean out of someone is "yes, but the others did it too."

Yeah, that's where we agree.  The Republicans tend to deflect from the President's responsibility by saying "But Democrats defended BLM looting" [they didn't].  It's annoying.

Just the opinions of a boomer-type Army Corps of Engineers veteran, 1 each: Whether or not the Capitol riot was carried out by far left or far right extremists, is not relevant. It was an unjustifiable act of insurrection...a failed putsch attempt by a few idiots to override the will of the majority as determined by a FAIR election by the laws of our Republic. Dammit, this ain't no Goddam Banana Republic run by some Goddam El-Presidente-For-Life or some Goddam narcissistic, loud-mouthed, tin-hatted Dictatorial LOSER! The Capitol building in D.C. ain't some Goddam beer hall in Munich, mein schatz!! 😠

Law enforcement needs to fully investigate this matter, and our courts need to punish the living hell out of any individuals and/or organizations that supported this act of sedition and insurrection in any way. Some time in a Federal penitentiary should wake up the perps. QAnon?! HA! Give 'em less time to fill up on imagined nut-bag conspiracy trash in some extremist on-line echo chamber, and more time turning big rocks into little rocks. A 10-20 year sentence with hard labor will clear their heads nicely...and provide the majority of the US electorate they wanted to overrule with plenty of high-quality, hand-made road gravel! Nothing like a little gainful employment for the likes of the Snowflake Shaman! My car's suspension will appreciate it! 🤣

To answer your above questions in order:

1. D. Trump and R. Giuliani incited the crowd to riot;

2. Investigation is ongoing. Possibly the kidnap and/or murder of some or all members of Congress and/or Capitol police;

3. They obviously don't listen to the advice of medical professionals, and prefer the advice of know-nothings. Some were wearing masks, though.

Hat's off to you, Roberts, for starting this thread. It seems the Reich-wingers are being punished with silence, at least in my neck o' the woods irl. It seems that way to me, anyway. Or, maybe, I just miss the entertainment their unhinged, lunatic rhetoric provided! 😂

God damn it, did you need to make this thread? You knew what was gonna happen...

The police should have responded better, no doubt. The ignorant little shits that made the first move in the protest that pushed it over to a riot are the issue at hand, not the protesters at large. As the left would say, it was a "mostly peaceful demonstration". I am not downplaying what they did and I have no objections to perpetrators being prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, but don't act like only the right does this. Anti-mask sentiment just shows how dumb these guys were.

Oh, and possessing a firearm is not illegal. Thought I should remind you 😛

Oh jeez here we go. Okay, firstly, "fanning" the flames is not a crime. Trump wanted a massive loud protest but said nothing eluding to an attack on the capital building. Guliani is a dick head. That's no surprise. He stepped out of line, not for the first time, and had... "questionable" opinions on the election. But Guliani is not now former-President Trump, and it is ignorant to say so.

Oh Jesus Christ. What happened to being an anarchist? What happened at the capitol was a mostly peaceful protest that went awry, and nobody objects to the criminals involved being arrested.

Yes. You are so full of shit. https://thehill.com/opinion/criminal-justice/513063-democrats-desperately-push-the-peaceful-protesters-delusion https://www.heritage.org/progressivism/commentary/five-months-blm-protestors-trashed-americas-cities-after-the-election https://wset.com/news/nation-world/democrats-accused-of-mixed-messaging-on-activist-violence
Of course, the majority of democrats did at some point condemn the riots including President Biden. But I shall point you to this https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-53218448 which the mayor fully supported.
Also, you make yourself sound stupid. When its convenient you are an anarchist but when the right has anarchists its an issue.
In Biden's words, come on man.

The idea that QAnon is somehow a social media platform for right wing terrorists is also a pure conspiracy theory. But it's still believed isn't it? I don't think the Capital Riot was pushed by Antifa, personally. That's a lot of effort for a bunch of retards.

Which is fair. But it isn't wrong to call hypocrisy on people while simultaneously condemning the Capital's violence.

No. Republicans do NOT deflect from the President's "responsibility" with THAT. They "deflect" with the fact that Trump himself did nothing wrong. I don't think I have seen any Republicans who look at the Capital riot and go "bOyS wIlL bE bOyS". Republicans condemned it very quickly. But is Trump responsible for it? No.

Oh my God. You are gonna regret mentioning you were former Army engineers because I'm gonna grill your twidget ass.

Firstly, no one disagrees that the rioters are criminals. In fact, you said so yourself, "a few idiots" is exactly what it was. And they should have the whole book thrown at them.

And here is where you become a bloody oxygen thief. Nobody asked you for your opinion on former-President Trump, even if it is warranted, because it has nothing to do with the Capital riots other than the fact that the protestors and rioters liked Trump enough to do it. That's it. If that Capital building was a beer hall then maybe our politicians would work a bit harder, but no.

Nobody is saying that the "few idiots" should get a slap on the wrist. No. Send them to China or Antarctica or idk Guantanamo. They should be punished. QAnon did nothing wrong though, unless you want to have Twitter shut down too for having literal war criminals on their platform.
You are such a pogue. Firstly, most of those guys are already laborers. Secondly, wanting to overthrow the government is not a crime. Maybe you, as a "soldier", should reread that thing you had to troll over during boot camp, the Constitution. I wonder how the founding fathers would respond to people like you thinking that certain thoughts should be outlawed. But hey, I'm all for work camps*. Maybe we should send all unemployed there too? Veterans maybe? Ooh ooh, what about leftist anarchists such as your friend Brython here? Think before you type, boy.

Bull. Giuliani might have incited the riot, and he should be punished. Trump? No. You must have been too busy being a day-shift daisy to see when Trump literally denounced the rioters and the riot continued. Trump gave no incitation to violence, and believing so is ignorant.

Cool. And, like I said before, the people at the capital that committed or attempted to commit crimes like those should and are being tracked down and arrested as we speak.

Not gonna comment on masks, cuz I already did.

Okay Ms. Latrine Queen, you must've been loved in basic. I bet you would be the kind of person to Blue Falcon someone when they had a picture of their girlfriend. Who says "Reich-Wingers" lmfao. Those who are actual nazis and fascists are pretty open about it, ya know. People that want to take down the government and cause anarchy are generally not associated with fascists. Unless Brython, and every other AnCom, is a fascist. In that case, sure. Tell me, what's so unhinged about being upset that who you supported lost the election? Cuz if I remember correctly, democrats were not too happy in 2016 either. But hey maybe my memory of the past 5 years has been brainwashed with fascist 5G waves that rearranged all my brain cells into being a "reich-winger"

Good God.

This is side not while reading the comments. However your crime is inexcusable, the German Reich was left wing. The only thing they were right wing on was the social scale but so was Stalinism so its still not an excuse to conflate Nazism with Conservativism when Stalinism held almost entire the same beliefs minus cultural superiority (even with that many Russians did and I think still feel cultural superiority towards the Ukrainians, Latvians, Lithuanians, and Estonians). The German Reich removed property rights given to them by the German constitution, consolidated corporation in 13 companies, dictated what these companies could and couldn't make, stated how much they could charge for the products, the corporation had to get government approval for any expansions, need approval for the usage of resources, and corporation incomes were taxed to where they barely made anything. The Reich also repeatedly increased family subsidies from 39-42, had state sponsored holidays, united all workers unions into one (just like Lenin), had rent control and price controls, tried collectivizing responsibly of German peasant farmers debts among all peasant farmers, and hell the even had [email protected]#$ Commissars. In the clubs and association also were forced to conform to the government regulations and requirements and made the individual subserviently to the community those are anti-right beliefs. The Reich was a massive failure when when it came to implementing fully socialism because they wanted to do it after conquer lebensraum, living space, in the east because they need the resources to do as such. Because, they failed does not discount everything else they did and did not mean they were on the right at all. They were failures not right winger.
(side note within side not but most modern Reich-winger are still on the left from everything I have researched)

I have 107 references if you want to if what I am saying is in fact true but that would be way to much to post in this one message.

the new york politician at the restaurant.

You have my approval 👍

Also, I'd like to note, Stalin died almost consequently because he had all the Jews within 100 miles executed https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racism_in_the_Soviet_Union#Jews. The Chinese as well prosecute minorities, and literally have concentration camps https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2019/11/16/world/asia/china-xinjiang-documents.html. The Vietnamese are hardly communist, they are just a disaster, but they also persecuted minority ethnic groups https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persecution_of_the_Montagnard_in_Vietnam. I am unsure of any mal-doing in Cuba, but, again, it's a tropical resort island. Maybe a large missile carrier at best. Communism has never and will never work simply because nobody except the people that want to abuse the system truly want to live under that system. Mixed economy can be discussed, even social democracy. But communism at its premise can and will not work and trying to make it work should be held in equal scrutiny to trying to make fascism work. It doesn't. Give up.

Collectivism sucks, embrace individualism.

Also that NY politician is Mr. Cuomo, who is literally a gremlin. I had some respect for him at the beginning of the pandemic, but he squashed it. He was elected by the city, not NY state at large. The bureaucrats in Albany and NYC can whine all they want, he isn't my governor.

If you think Nazism = Conservatism, you need to get back to class. Nazism = Extreme Right. Conservatism = 'Regular' Right. Fascism and Communism, for example, are politically polar opposites. There's an old book called "Rise and Fall of the Third Reich", written William Shirer, I think it was. Maybe ya get something out of that to add to your 'research'.

Your line of reasoning seems to be: ie. Extremist regimes, Left or Right, are both composed of control freaks, are oppressive, use plenty of 'political police', etc. = Have commonalities = They are the same = All are extreme Left....is illogical. Chairs and tables have commonalities, but they are not the same. You've bought into a whopping logical fallacy. I might not be an authority, but I have the ability to reason.

Try to refute this: All Extremists = Illogical, Radical Screwball Nut-Bags. Discussions with such are guaranteed to be a waste of time.

Uh, what??  Its almost like... hear me out.... having corporations is not left wing?  It's almost like every power of the war enforced restrictions on businesses because, yknow, world war?

Or do I need to mention Hitler literally wrote in Mein Kampf about Marxists being terrible???  Like, the Reich imprisoned socialists in the same camps they imprisoned the Jews.

Quote

“Our great heads of industry are not concerned with the accumulation of wealth and the good life, rather they are concerned with responsibility and power. They have acquired this right by natural selection: they are members of the higher race. But you would surround them with a council of incompetents [unions], who have no notion of anything. No economic leader can accept that.”

- Adolf Hitler

Quote

“Socialism is the science of dealing with the common wealth. Communism is not Socialism. Marxism is not Socialism. The Marxians have stolen the term and confused its meaning. I shall take Socialism away from the Socialists.

Socialism, unlike Marxism, does not repudiate private property. Unlike Marxism, it involves no negation of personality, and unlike Marxism, it is patriotic... We are not internationalists. Our socialism is national. We demand the fulfillment of the just claims of the productive classes by the state on the basis of race solidarity. To us state and race are one.”

- Adolf Hitler

Quote
so·cial·ism
/ˈsōSHəˌlizəm/

noun
noun: socialism
  1. a political and economic theory of social organization which advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole.

Look at those Hitler quotes and tell me how it argues for community-owned production???

I'm way too late to this, but I really really wanted to give some input on this.

1. Trump definitely incited insurrection. Incited insurrection does not mean "KILL ALL THE PEOPLE IN THE CAPITOL", it means "if you don't fight like hell you're not going to have a country anymore,"  “When you catch somebody in a fraud, you’re allowed to go by very different rules;” and  “You’ll never take back our country with weakness.” Trump encouraged unlawful behavior, and his rhetoric gave rioters the moral justification to storm the Capitol. In fact, many supporters were heard by journalists saying "This is what Trump wants" Regardless of whether he explicitly stated it, the fact that his words convinced people to riot is proof of his guilt.

2. Antifa has nothing to do with the riots, that's complete bullshit. However, they are still criminals so don't forget that.

3. Trump is also to blame for anti-mask sentiment, I'm sick and tired of people downplaying the virus. Trump's words personally insult anyone who has lost loved ones to this disease, and those who follow him are guilty of the same. I don't know about the double standards that you were talking about, but just because they did it doesn't mean you can too. Anyone who justifies the guilty is also guilty.

4. All extremists are bad, who gives a shit what ideology they are? What really matters is that Nazis, Communists, Anarchists, Antifa, QAnon, 3 Percenters, and Proud Boys are all lunatics who only bring negatives to our society.

5. BLM riots are organized to be peaceful, and are ruined by those who are only there to loot and destroy. There is a stark difference between a protestor who cares about the cause than the random hoodwinks who only want to cause chaos. On the other hand, the worst of the Trump rioters are the most devout followers.

God damn it, did you need to make this thread? You knew what was gonna happen...

...m8, owning a firearm isn't the problem, it's giving an idiot a firearm that's the problem.

True masters of gunplay know exactly how dangerous an idiot with a firearm is, so they are desperate to ensure that only smart people even feel the need to own firearms.

Which means that they're neglecting the smart people that don't feel the need to own firearms.

Which means that the predatory monsters of the world have noticed that there are smart and rich people that don't own firearms.

Which means, to them, that those rich people are not smart, and are therefore valid targets to be consumed, since they are obviously personally smarter than their targets, and they know what happens to stupid rich people.

....

And everybody hates the word "gun", because it has always meant artillery and it should always mean artillery. Nobody's used it right for a hundred years tbqhwyl*.

*to be quite honest with you ladies*

*yes, ladies, you're bickering like a sewing circle, get your head in the game you shits :P

Indeed. I remember getting yelled at when I was at a range. I said something to the effect of "my gun is jammed" and they said they weren't Fort Knox lol.

You've been to a firing range?

I would not have guessed. When was this? And where?

Because they did the right thing, you were learning from true masters of gunplay right there. I've been trained in firearms myself, albeit not to a degree of actual... competitive accuracy.

Eyy, so you've kept up with it. Awesome.

....I'm pretty you are not the "best marksman", though, not out of braggadocio (I'm awful) but out of simply trying to manage your expectations... you don't know any of us here, we are strangers, and frankly we don't care. Not out of personal disinterest mind you, your stories are really interesting, but as a matter of objective interest.

We're all a persona, here. If you choose to present yourself as a marksman here, then Aqua-Corpsman is a marksman. If you choose to present yourself as the son of a humble farmer, then Aqua-Corpsman is the son of a humble farmer... not you. Now don't misunderstand, I mean not *YOU*.

And frankly, video games are an escape, not a job. That means we come here to relax, and that means if... and I do mean *if* the World Champion of Olympic Marksmanship is indeed on this forum, he has just been deeply personally and professionally insulted by your bragging. (Though he may be willing to test you and see if you're really as good as you have just claimed. I don't know, I'm not him and I don't care what he does, objectively, as long as he doesn't deliberately choose to harm you.)

Thankfully for this theoretical marksman and you, he has only been so insulted by Aqua-Corpsman, which means that you are in no way in danger of getting shot right now... only raided :P
