Karlis Ulmanis
Whatever one thinks of Latvia’s Prime Minister Oskars Dankers and his party, the Latvian National Front, the overall condition of Latvia's economy and infrastructures looked much scarier. The small baltic Republic has suffered years of economic stagnation, high unemployment, rampant poverty and a dramatic increase of crime rates. On the streets of Riga, Latvia's capital city, the frustration of ordinary citizens is palpable. Almost two decades of corruption and political instability have angered the low and middle classes, prompting them to support the far-right movement which promised order, prosperity and peace. The Latvian National Front has a paramilitary wing, currently called the “Latvian Guardâ€, reminiscent of the Latvian Legion of the wartime period, famous for its struggle against the Soviet occupation. The Latvian National Front is also the most popular political group among young people, according to polls, and its leaders include savvy and charismatic politicians, who do not look out of place in any leading government role. Prime Minister Oskars Dankers, wearing the uniform of the "Latvian Guard" The Latvian National Front enjoys a constitutional majority in the Latvian Parliament, and uses its position to push a series of controversial reforms, including a new constitution, passed without any broader cross-party consensus. The party has also made moves toward a massive centralization of power, placing Latvian National Front loyalists in positions of influence even in nominally independent branches of government, such as the central bank. Latvia’s institutional backsliding is also evident from a number of other indicators, including its recent downgrade on a recent report which reclassified Latvia from the category of “Consolidated Democracies†to “Semi-Consolidated Democracies.†Their campaign strategies are superior to other parties, and they are tackling issues other parties dare not touch. Riga, for example, has been covered with posters addressed to immigrants, warning them not to take the Latvian people’s jobs, and asking them to respect Latvia’s culture and laws. Written in Latvian, their true audience seems to be Latvian nationalist voters. The government is also building a wall on border to stop the inflow of illegal immigrants, who — as Prime Minister Dankers suggested — should “be treated as criminals.†Oskars Dankers built up his image on a radical nationalist theme. His party associated with far-right movements and barely-legal political movements for years. Now with the new legitimated majority in Latvia's Parliament, only the packaging changed. Dankers’s leadership still associates itself with the radical paramilitary group "Latvian Guard". An MP of the Latvian National Front had the audacity to call for the listing of people with foreign origins and see how many of them poses a national security threat. This he did in the parliament and got away with it. As this the other MPs who praised the effort of collabirationist political figures and volunteers of the Latvian SS Legion during the German occupation of Latvia, spoke up against the immigrant community. "Guards" of the Latvian Guard parade in the streets of Riga President Karlis Ulmanis serves as a merely ceremonial figure, representing the unity of the Latvian Nation. He is subordinated to the will of the parliament of Latvia, the National Assembly. He is rarely involved in the political choices of the government, and he is often seen during public ceremonies. The people of Latvia respect him, and so does the National Assembly and the Latvian National Front, probably due to his lack of authority and control over the choices of Prime Minister Dankers rather than genuine admiration and respect for Latvia's Head of State. The Latvian Liberal Party holds less than 20% of the National Assembly and its activists seem quite pessimistic. They predict that Dankers might be on its way to becoming a fully fledged authoritarian leader, following his victory in November's elections.
