Our Geography: Located in Northern Europe,Southern Sweden forms the South-Eastern part of the Scandinavian Peninsula.To the East is the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Bothnia and to the West is the Scandinavian Mountain chain,a range that separates Southern Sweden from Norway.To the North is the Russian Federation which has a guarded border at the 63rd parallel near the city of Ostersund.The country has maritime borders with Denmark,Germany,Poland,The Russian Federation,Estonia,Latvia and Lithuania.The country is also linked to the Eastern part of Denmark by the Oresund Bridge. About the Russian Federation: In the end of the Second World War,Sweden was liberated by the Soviet Union.As a result,most of the Northern Swedes became communist and wanted to join the Soviet Union for protection.In the end,Northern Sweden was absorbed into the Russian Empire along with Finland but the Soviets were worried that the South were going to attack back aided by France,the UK and the US so the border became heavily guarded with about 50,000 Russian and Finnish soldiers.In an effort to avoid a war,the king of Southern Sweden held a conference with Josef Stalin, the ruler of the Soviet Union, in 1951 and assured that no war is going to happen.However,there were still 25,000 troops guarding the border and the king decided to move the capital to Gothenburg so that the Russians would take a longer time to capture if there was an invasion and so it can be closer to the UK and Denmark for support.
