No need to take this deep. The enjoying thing is the roleplay included, and a passtime. Apparently Orbis does not only love war, but also football.

Day four simmed.  How did it go?  See for yourself.

Cothroime vs. Imperial Russian FC

Cothroime wins 5-3

"Now we've seen it all.  Cothroime - FOFA's Jekyll and Hyde, apparently - pulls off the most stunning result in the history of international football."

Brittish Empire vs. Hero-Shima's Crystal Palace

Hero-Shima's Crystal Palace wins 5-1

"In more expected news, Hero-Shima stomps the Britts en route to clinching a spot in the knockout round."

Terpistan vs. Empire of Armenia

Empire of Armenia wins 4-1

"Empire of Armenia tunes up for the knockout round, at the expense of the formerly-proud, now-winless Terps."

Lantean vs. Liber Freedom Eagles

Liber Freedom Eagles win 3-2

"If you have to lose at some point, might as well be to the fourth-best team in the world."

PigSkin vs. MWK's Zlatan FC

MWK's Zlatan FC wins 4-3

"MWK was expected to beat every team but the Russians in Group A, so nothing unscripted here."

Dutch vs. Indo-Froschtia

Dutch wins 4-1

"Dutch is looking to emerge from the chaos that has become Group B.  Winning today against Indo-Froschtia puts them on the right path, but they still need to finish it tomorrow."

Nassckonia United Soccer vs. Rage

Nassckonia United Soccer wins 1-0

"An extremely close game until the final minutes of stoppage time.  You have to wonder how much this will sting for Rage, having been so close to a huge boost towards the knockout stage."

Norma Jean's FC Arrgh! vs. Wallachia

Wallachia wins 5-3

"Wallachia beats Arrgh! in a game that didn't really matter for either side, as Lantean and Liber have both clinched Group D.  Disappointing World Cup for the Pirates."

---

Note: some of you may be wondering why Cothroime didn't get a huge boost for beating the Russians. It's because they were still provisionally rated (i.e. unrated) at the time of the match.  Teams that have not played 5 games do not get a rating, so all form adjustments are standard (1 for home wins/losses, 2 for road wins/losses).  Still, wow.

The world's number 20 defeats the world's number one. The result has shocked many football fans.

This is not the end of the road for LiFE, they are even more determined to go towards the championships.

One match that Lantean's all tuned into was the much anticipated match against Liber Freedom Eagles. So much talk about this match in both nations. It was experience from Liber Freedom Eagles that saw them pick up the victory. Although it's Lantea's first loss in the world cup it's been the highlight match so far for Lantean's.

Lantea has got many new sponsors for when they get back after the world cup, giving lots of money to help improve their football ability.

It has been a long, grueling week for football clubs and their worldwide fans.  Today is the last day of the group stage, and the knockout rounds have been decided.  First, the results.

MWK's Zlatan FC vs. Phintopia

Phintopia wins 3-2

"The hosts save some face by beating the second-best team in their group.  Suddenly, Group A has become a tornado of possibilities."

Indo-Froschtia vs. Cammora

Cammora wins 2-1

"Must-win situation for Cammora, and they take destiny into their own hands by beating Indo-Froschtia."

Rage vs. Resvernas

Resvernas wins 1-0

"Can't help but feel bad for Rage, which has lost two 1-0 decisions in this tournament.  Resvernas dances on to the knockout round."

Wallachia vs. German Empire

Wallachia wins 2-1

"Wallachia wins some pride in Group D, as that group has already been decided between Lantean and Liber."

Imperial Russian FC vs. PigSkin

Imperial Russian FC wins 4-3

"Another shocking loss for the Russians, and you have to wonder about the confidence of their keeper.  Two games in a row where the powerhouse has scored three, and two games in a row where it hasn't been enough.  Shocking result, terrible timing."

Hero-Shima's Crystal Palace vs. Dutch

Hero-Shima's Crystal Palace wins 2-1

"Dutch needed to win today to advance, but the best team in their group had other ideas.  Hero-Shima finishes off their undefeated group play set, and Dutch will be going home disappointed."

Empire of Armenia vs. Nassckonia United Soccer

Empire of Armenia wins 4-3

"Empire of Armenia, darlings of the football world, move on to the knockout round after sweeping group play."

Liber Freedom Eagles vs. Norma Jean's FC Arrgh!

Liber Freedom Eagles wins 4-3

"Credit to the Pirates for showing the will to fight against Liber, but you have to wonder where it was earlier in the tournament.  Disappointment with a capital D."

---

The knockout rounds will begin tomorrow!  Here is how each group breaks down:

Group A:

Russia's two losses really threw this group into disarray, as each team has a record of 2-2!  The win-loss tiebreaker doesn't clear things up here, so the FOFA committee has decided to use goal differential as the second tie breaker.  Here are the results of that tiebreak:

Imperial Russian FC: +9

MWK's Zlatan FC: +4

PigSkin: 0

Cothroime: -2

Phintopia: -11

As a result, Imperial Russian FC (A1) and MWK's Zlatan FC (A2) advance to the knockout stage!

Group B:

Hero-Shima's Crystal Palace advances as B1 from this group.

Second place is a two-way tie between Dutch and Cammora.  However, Cammora won the match against Dutch during group play, so Cammora advances as B2!

Group C:

Empire of Armenia (C1) and Resvernas (C2) advance from Group C.

Group D:

Liber Freedom Eagles (D1) and Lantean (D2) advance from Group D.

Quarterfinal Matchups:

Imperial Russian FC (A1) vs. Cammora (B2)

Hero-Shima's Crystal Palace (B1) vs. MWK's Zlatan FC (A2)

Empire of Armenia (C1) vs. Lantean (D2)

Liber Freedom Eagles (D1) vs. Resvernas (C2)

Good luck to the remaining teams!  Previews will be posted shortly!

Crowds in Liber celebrate as their team enters the quarterfinals. LiFE is even more determined to be able to enter the finals. Our team is an underdog, no more.

The Emperor has to return home briefly to Liber, and will not be able to watch the quarterfinals.

Quarterfinal Match Previews

Imperial Russian FC (A1, 2-2) vs. Cammora (B2, 2-2)

The Russians are still the best team in football, but backed into the knockout round with two uninspired losses against Cothroime and PigSkin.  The team looked invincible prior to the start of the tournament, and even through the first two matches of the group stage.  However, Goliath clearly has a weak spot, and they have a team on their hands that always rises to the occasion in big matches - Cammora.

Cammora had a rocky start to the tournament, losing to the Brittish Empire, a relatively weak side.  However, needing a win against Indo-Froschtia to advance (as well as some help from Hero-Shima against Dutch), Cammora now finds themselves in the knockout round, where anything can happen.

Bad games can't be written off in the knockout rounds, as it is loser goes home and winner goes on.  Cammora is now playing with house money, and Imperial Russian FC is a team with such fierce fan and financial backing that anything less than a World Cup is beyond disappointment.  Pressure is on for the favourites - can they recover from their slow play of late?

MWK's Zlatan FC (A2, 2-2) vs. Hero-Shima's Crystal Palace (B1, 4-0)

Group A was a tough draw for the Koreans, as they got paired up with the Russians.  The fact that they couldn't sweep the rest of the teams in their group has to be a point of regret for them.  A win against Phintopia would have put MWK in first place in the group, following the Russians' unprecedented losses, and would have drawn them Cammora instead of Hero-Shima in the quarterfinal.  Alas, this is the hand they have been dealt, and they have to deal with it.

Hero-Shima is #2 in the world, and came in to the tournament showing it.  They went 4-0 in group play, and are currently in top form.  Korea has historically played well against Hero-Shima, but the World Cup is a different stage, and Hero-Shima has clearly come with one goal in mind - winning the championship.

If the Koreans want to win here, they'll have to score early, take the lead, and plant the seed of doubt in the Hero-Shima side, which is looking more and more invincible with each win that passes.

Empire of Armenia (C1, 4-0) vs. Lantean (D2, 3-1)

Let's rewind in time a bit: tell yourself, or any footy fan, that Empire of Armenia will be one of the top sides in the world, and heading into the quarterfinals of World Cup I as an undefeated top seed.  The former 0-35 world doormat is now one of the premier sides in football, and they are the adopted team of many fans around the world, clamoring for the tiny, small-budget nation to ride its natural sporting might to a championship.

Across the pitch in the quarterfinal, the Armenians face a team that must resemble a look into their own past.  Lantean came into the tournament with the most minute of expectations, and responded by winning three of four and advancing to the knockout stage against all odds.  It has been a magical run for Lantean, but they are 0 for 1 in their tests against top teams, having dropped a match to Liber during the group stages.  3-1 against teams like Arrgh! and Wallachia is fine, but they're going to have to beat the best if they want to show they are for real.

The Armenians have paid their dues and deserve to be where they are, but Lantean looks like destiny's team in its own right.  This should be an exciting match.

Resvernas (C2, 3-1) vs. Liber Freedom Eagles (D1, 4-0)

This is a matchup between two countries with a lot of money and a lot of football support.  Both Resvernas and Liber have poured millions into training and building their respective programs, and now collide on the pitch in the last quarterfinal matchup.

King Lascray personally invested time and money into training the Liber side himself, and the benefit has been apparent.  Liber looked basically unstoppable in group play, and is certainly the favorite against a Resvernas side that has always been one of the better teams, but not quite one of the best.

Resvernas has a chance to shake the underachiever label with a win against Liber.  A team with so much talent is dangeous anytime it takes the pitch, and Liber will be smart to not take this game lightly.  Resvernas was a few people's dark-horse pick to win it all, and they certainly have the firepower to get it done.

Imperial Russian FC are among the biggest sides around. They are favourites for our tie. We're lucky to play them in the quarter-final. We'll try to make the most of this quarter-final. They have top-quality players who have plenty of unity and togetherness.

Lantea is doing extra preparations in the lead up to the quarterfinal match against Empire of Armenia. They are a growing talent, Lantea is studying all their group matches trying to find a weakness.

We will soon see if Lantea has found a weakness in Empire of Armenia side but they won all their matches in their group. Lantea will need a miracle to gain victory.

President Sheppard will travel to Phintopia to watch the quarterfinal.

Quarterfinals have been simulated.  See below:

Imperial Russian FC (A1, 2-2) vs. Cammora (B2, 2-2)

Cammora wins 1-0

"An unbelievable result.  The scoreless game went to penalties, where Cammora prevailed over the Russians by a score of 5-4.  Cammoran supporters stormed the field after the keeper made the final save on the Russian kicker. Just like that, the best team in FOFA is going home empty-handed.  Absolutely shocking."

MWK's Zlatan FC (A2, 2-2) vs. Hero-Shima's Crystal Palace (B1, 4-0)

Hero-Shima's Crystal Palace wins 3-2

"Great, strong, physical game played by both sides.  Each team lost a man to a red card in the first half, leading to some exciting ten-a-side action.  Hero-Shima broke the tie in the 77th minute, and held on to remain unbeaten and advance to the semifinals."

Empire of Armenia (B1, 4-0) vs. Lantean (D2, 3-1)

Empire of Armenia wins 4-3

"Lantean's magical run finally ends at the hands of the Armenians, who ride their high-powered offense to the semifinals.  Nothing but highly-held heads should be seen from the Lantean side after the performance they put on in this inaugural World Cup.  Armenia will now look to complete their own worst-to-first story."

Resvernas (C2, 3-1) vs. Liber Freedom Eagles (D1, 4-0)

Liber Freedom Eagles win 5-2

"Have to think that this game would have been closer.  Resvernas just didn't show up to play in a match that was win or go home. Liber has really developed a reputation for choking opponents out with a strong offense and stifling defense.  Possession was 75/25 between Liber and Resvernas respectively, and Liber hardly broke a sweat."

Semifinal Matchups

Cammora (B2, 3-2) vs. Empire of Armenia (C1, 5-0)

"A classic Original Ten battle in the first semifinal awaits us, as the Armenians face off against Cammora for the right to play for the World Cup.

You can't help but think that Empire of Armenia is pretty happy with the draws it has been getting throughout the tournament.  After Lantean stunned everyone by going 3-1 in group play, the Armenians drew them in the first round, as opposed to a side like FC Arrgh!  Now, after Cammora's shocking upset of Russia, the Armenians face an opponent that, on paper, they should be able to beat.

However, the game is played on pitch, not paper.  Cammora is riding high off of momentum after that breathtaking penalty shootout win over the world #1, and now looks like a side that cannot be stopped by anyone or anything.  For as powerful as the Russians were, however, the loss was their third in a row.  Empire of Armenia has not lost a game all tournament, and has not really been challenged in any of its matches to date.  Cammora is guaranteed a shot at third place, but you can't help but sense that alone isn't good enough for them anymore."

Hero-Shima's Crystal Palace (B1, 5-0) vs. Liber Freedom Eagles (D1, 5-0)

"This is really the kind of match that everyone wants to see in a knockout round: two undefeated, top seeded powerhouses going head-to-head.  Liber vs. Hero-Shima is easily the most high-powered match we've seen to date in the World Cup, and it should live up to all of the hype.

Hero-Shima quietly cruised through Group B.  Of all the top teams, they seem like the one that receives the least fanfare.  However, Crystal Palace is a solid side from front to back, and they pose a challenge unlike any that Liber has faced thus far in the tournament.  One of the Original Ten in FOFA, Hero-Shima didn't really come onto the scene as one of the best in the world until quite recently.  Beating Liber will help them further cement their rightful place near the top.

King Lascray missed his nation's quarterfinal stomping of Resvernas, but no doubt he watched the replay and liked what he saw.  Liber has made a habit during this World Cup of not only winning but totally dominating opponents.  Even though there have been some one-goal games, there really hasn't been a game where Liber has looked like it has truly been challenged.  However, Liber has not faced a top-tier team throughout the tournament so far - the closest has been Resvernas.  Hero-Shima is on a different level, so this will be a true test for the Eagles."

Games will be simmed tomorrow.  Cheers!
