Peshmerga and Iraqi army are notorious for exaggerating their successes and downplaying their losses (which are all too frequent). The last thing we see in the video is him running back to the armoured vehicle. There is no reason why he couldn't have bunkered down until nightfall (it was late evening) using the armoured vehicle as cover and made his way back to base under the cover of night. Abu Hajar, as probably one of the most likely survivors, was pretty competent if you ask me (not sure why you lot are giving him such a hard time). However all units vary in terms of experience and training so you can't really expect them all to perform at the same level.
