We should expand it and end the Gun Show loophole on this. And there should be more stringent checks on mental illness. I don't get the fetishization with guns. I mean, are people compensating for something?

In my state, you don't even have to register a gun to own it. You can actually buy guns on the internet and nobody will ever know about it.

As for mental illness, I'm not sure I even believe in the concept so much as I believe in neuroplasticity and the fact that no two brains are the same. I have a "mental disorder". I also own a few guns. I've also never killed anyone or even considered it. I'm pretty sure most shootings are done by perfectly competent people. Further more, governments and militaries are people like you and me. Why exactly should they be allowed to wield such devastation and not everyone else? Snowdens leaks have shown that our own military can wield this force to massacre civilians and history has proven that this act by governments is by no means accidental or non-intentional.

We all have the right to make our own choices.

And if it helps, I also don't distinguish between war, capital punishment and murder. All killing is killing.

 

EDIT: Though, I'm not actually in favor of legalizing machine guns. However, military grade assault rifles should be legal.

 

Now with that out of the way, I equally feel like a lot of these questions are not simply a yes or no, so I'm going to explain my position on a couple, as with the one above:

 

Do you believe abortion should be legal?

As Bel said, there should be no restrictions on first trimester abortions. Anything beyond that should be illegal.

 

 

Do you approve of gay marriage?

As a bisexual; yes and no (though I voted "no").

On the subject of marriage, IDC what people decide to do in their own bedrooms and nobody else should either. Thus, my position on the subject of marriage in general is: I don't believe in a legal concept of marriage. Marriage should not have any legal standing whatsoever.

Then people could marry rocks, trees, have ten wives or Pluto for all I care.

I don't see any mention in the OP of the things that actually matter to the long-term success of the nation and its citizens. 20 years from now, US citizens will look back and ask why nobody did a full overhaul of the healthcare system, why nobody fixed an electoral mechanism whereby a few voters in the "swing" states decide the president and the votes of people in all the other states mean nothing, why when everyone knew about the financial impact of an ageing population nobody tried to reduce the national debt, why nobody reformed campaign financing/contributions to prevent a handful of corporations/lobbies from "buying" political representatives, and why the US's foreign policy was allowed to become a political football.
