When you type out ": P" do you mean it to be like :P or the way it appears as text? To me anyways, the difference seems like being playful ( :P) and being a little more rude or confused "=P". That is, when the text is changed to an emoticon I feel like the way it is perceived is changed.

I'd say to me I use the text : P but I use it, not so much to show rudeness, but more of an "ugh".... If that makes sense. Kinda like this..
