Its all in the title (In a military or service sense)

 

Do eyepatches make you look badass/cool because you got injured protecting someone, you carried on etc

or

You were too slow and got injured

You need to have the right look to pull off an eye patch.

If you can't pull of the look then you were just a failure. You describe it as cool or not cool so that's why I say having the right appearance.
