[Something scary happened to me today]

Dude someone needed a place to crash.  While it's smart to be vigilant most interactions of this sort are not violent.  If the person squatting in your barn wanted to seek out violence they easily could have done so.  Most likely they want to avoid confrontation at all costs.  Smart move calling the cops, let the professionals handle it.
