Nuclear Power Plant Controversy

Controversy Over the Construction of a Nuclear Power Plant in Antwerp

Two years ago, The Flemish Parliament voted on legislation to build the nation's first nuclear power station, in the Flemish capital. The results of the vote were 117-for and 83-against. After many months of construction, the nuclear power plant in Antwerp has been completed, but there is still a huge amount of disagreement over whether the new power plant will help or hurt to people of Flanders.

The Liberal Socialists and The Moderate Party agree the power plant will benefit the people, partially because it produces no CO2 and releases no pollutants into the air, thus reducing the country's carbon dioxideemissions and improving air quality in the surrounding suburbs. Also, despite the high costs of the construction and operation of the power station, it will actually save the government money in the long run because exchanging the two coal power stations for one nuclear power station will free up more coal to be exported and more land for commercial buildings. Most Flemings also agree with the Liberal Socialist and Moderate parties. According to a poll conducted by scientists at The University of Antwerp, 81% of Flemings think that the construction of the nuclear power station a good thing for the people of Flanders.

Meanwhile, The Conservative Party thinks the nuclear power plant is a terrible thing for Antwerp and Flanders. The Conservatives think that global warming doesn't exist and that Flanders should use more coal to power it's cities. They also deny that sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, and particulate matter emitted from coal-fired power stations has any negative effect on human health. Secondly, they think that replacing the coal power plants with the nuclear power plant took away jobs, despite the fact the the nuclear power plant has 110 workers, while each of the two coal plants only had 40 workers.

Interestingly, The Green Party is actually divided on the issue. Some Green Party members think that the nuclear power station is great because it will lead to fewer carbon dioxideemissions and better air quality, but others think that the nuclear power station is terrible for the welfare of the Flemish people because the nuclear wastes that is produces could cause significant damage to the environment if they are not handled properly.

Despite this, nuclear power plants produce a lot of nuclear waste which must be taken very careful care of, or else it could destroy the surrounding suburbs and give all the people nearby cancer.

Ah, 10 year old articles!

Also though, the Empire of Narvan has completely changed to Nuclear power, and can confirm massive benefits from doing so.

Good times...back when Canada was debating nuclear power.

They have provided us with an incredible source of energy, however they seem to be a big target for terrorists and the entire city of Niagara Falls was blacked out as a precaution for 5 days during a terrorist attack.

Nuclear waste is no problem, we have a special plant that takes our waste and refines it so that it can be used to make our Nuclear Missiles, although it is low efficiency, producing small amounts of usable uranium, and the useless rock that's left (however still poisonous) we dump in the wastes of Rekishstein owned by the Xenonians.

The Rekish people actually don't mind, because when we dump it there it's far away from New Rekishstein and it also kills Xenonians, so win-win-win.

The article actually mentions nuclear waste in the last paragraph.

The Flemish Government actually pays to get it's nuclear waste transported to a remote underground nuclear waste storage facility in the deserts of North America. We are very careful with the nuclear waste and make sure to take all of the proper safety precautions.

Also, there aren't many terrorist attacks in Flanders, but the country is raided on occasion.

In the deserts of North America? You'd better not be dumping in Canada...cause the 2nd country on our "Nuclear Dumping List" is Flanders.

God no! Our nuclear waste is stored at two facilities, one in the deserts of new Mexico, and one underneath Yucca Mountain in Southern Nevada. The areas around these storage facilities are basically desert wastelands, and very sparsely populated. We would never dare pollute the beautiful forests, mountains, and rivers of Canada.

Ahhh thank goodness. Yes. Here in Canada we are committed to keeping our waters clean and healthy for all citizens of Canada, and the world. We are doing our part to stop global warming and stuff.

I would never be able to do what that. Coal power plants in each city of a country as large as yours would consume too much coal for me. To each his own.
