Independence!
Orbis Date Jan 14 1999
MARIA — After nearly a decade of nationalist tensions and relentless armed resistance that claimed thousands of lives over the years, Tyro Leif, leader of the Athretvar National Liberation Committee (ANLC) took to the air waves yesterday to declare the signing of an historic peace treaty acknowledging and accepting Athretvari's independence, and formally ending hostilities between Maria and its former colonial oppressors in the Southern Indian Ocean Region (SIOR).
The ANLC, a broad coalition of armed ethnic Athretvar rebel groups and liberation organizations led by General Leif, has appointed him chairman of the National Provisional Government and Defender-of-the-Realm, the nation's highest military officer and supreme commander of the armed defense and security forces.
"... Today, my fellow Athretvar, I declare to you that the sacrifices you have endured, the great and tragic losses you have suffered, that the tremendous struggle for our own liberation is ended. We are now a free and independent people!"
"... We must take this great opportunity to chart our own course, and to strive for our own national dreams and aspirations. As the time of our armed struggle for independence ends, we must wipe the dust, blood, and tears of war from our faces, and begin the ever greater challenge of building the foundations of our prosperity, and the prosperity of our future generations."
"I do not doubt that we will encounter many obstacles and threats to our peace, but I also do not doubt the will and capacity of our people to overcome each and all of them."
—General Tyro Leif, public address Jan 13, 1999
