With Reubenia finally able to breathe a collective sigh of relief, the nation raised taxes and poured large amounts of funding into scientific research, education, and the rebuilding process. Smaller amounts were diverted into defence, to ensure that such a resounding military humiliation would never occur again. Of course, unless something went very wrong indeed, there would be no reason for Reubenia to go to war against anyone for some time. Nevertheless, history had long punished those who failed to prepare for the worst. In the coming months, numerous advances would be made, as Reubenia, the sleeping titan, was awakened.

A specialised hacking AI had been in the works for several months. Known as the Artificially Intelligent Hacking Algorithm, or AIHA, this AI used a deep learning algorithm to improve itself by learning from experience.

Initially, the AI was taught the basics of hacking. It was then tasked with hacking into and disabling supercomputers as fast as possible. Several hours later, and AIHA had surpassed Reubenia's most skilled hacker division.

The next phase was for AIHA to learn cyber defence, in case any nation attempted to take it out. A hacker division was tasked with disabling AIHA. Several hundred reboots later, and AIHA was now immune from hacking by even Reubenia's best.

For the final phase, AIHA would be pitted against itself. A copy of AIHA was produced, and the two copies were ordered to hack each other. This phase would last the longest, and would run for months.

AIHA is now able to produce clones of itself to carry out instructions even faster. In one test, AIHA reprogrammed a swarm of blaster drones within seconds, a feat never before achieved.

After safeguards were introduced, AIHA was deployed, and now remotely guards all drones from enemy hacking. Any nation attempting war with AIHA would see almost all computers hacked within hours.

The satellites lost in the war with The Regime would be replaced in the coming weeks, as AIs worked around the clock to fulfil instructions. The airfields destroyed would also be repaired by several thousand robots in the coming months. It was estimated that the damage sustained in the war against The Regime would be fully repaired within 6 months.

For the first time in years, Reubenia's radioactive dust levels dropped to safe levels. News outlets have reported this as the beginning of the end of the nuclear winter, which has long been an ever-present fixture of Reubenian life.

Advances in cooling technology allowed the Reubenian navy to equip naval ships with rapid-firing railguns, capable of firing 20 shells a minute, to a high degree of accuracy.

A translation earpiece was pushed into development for the forces of the EU military to use. While English was the current lingua franca, bypassing the need for a common language entirely had obvious strategic benefits.

The translation earpiece was completed, and a less specialised version was developed for civilian use.

Money was poured into refining VR systems for military training. One of the initiatives was the development of an Immersive Neural Stimulation Interface (INSI), which would allow users to feel and naturally interact with a digital environment. With advances in digital technology, this could be a game-changer.

Whole brain emulation was finally achieved. It was now possible to upload someone's brain into a computer. Due to obvious ethical considerations, most of the early experiments were performed on animals such as mice. Once the science was advanced enough, the terminally ill and wounded were allowed to volunteer for the process, as they had everything to gain and nothing to lose. Many of them just suffered from mental breakdowns, and had to be terminated out of mercy. But today, the process would finally be failsafe. Humanity, for the first time in history, had the chance to be immortal.

After a highly secretive program and hefty payouts to volunteers, several highly-trained soldiers agreed to have their minds cloned and programmed into mostly organic androids. 10,000 were to be created initially, to form the backbone of elite super-soldier battalions. Androids could also transmit their consciousness to a backup if faced with danger, before self-destructing. There was also a process which would destroy all non-organic components in the case of a system failure. After all, no one would want to lose their secret weapon to an enemy.

While the speed of a nervous signal is fairly slow, computers are constrained only by the speed of light. However, while signals may travel at light speed, there's a much lower on how fast a limb can move, before being damaged. For this region, both movement and signal speed would be capped at roughly 15 times faster than normal.
