Glad to see that Rose skipped over the whole starting the year off by narrowly escaping falling apart thing, this time. ? The scale of the game these days, compared to 2015, is quite exciting. The idea of multiple spheres felt more or less like a pipe dream back then.

Definitely an adjustment for someone recently returning. ?

    • Improve the information available to players (Formulas, best building practices) less guessing. Players should not have to join alliances to learn how to play the game efficiently.

Agreed. The initial presentation of information in-game with the objectives presented one at a time and the rewards for doing so is excellent. The issue is that it's just a basic overview and to really understand the game, you have to join an alliance for quality, in-depth guides. A new player has very little idea what alliance has the best resources for this, apart from picking one of the top ranked ones. Then they don't do know if the culture is a fit for them. Additionally, the amount of information to read and absorb is overwhelming to a newcomer.

Today's PnW looks a lot different than the one I left a few years ago. There are API keys, bots and scripts for game advantages that are utilized by those with the understanding of how to do so. This is intimidating for a new player who wants to be able to manage their nation efficiently but doesn't have access to these tools or understanding of how to use/create them. The answer should not be to join an alliance that does. It should be built into the game.

    • Improve the mobile app, mobile gaming is huge and we should absolutely target this as a way to grow the game.

I haven't even seen the mobile app. It's not available in the Apple Store although there's a link to it on the main game page. But, the game website needs to be better optimized for mobile. Part of it seems to be but then, for example, if I go to one of my cities, I have to slide the page around to see all of the improvements.

    • Integrate offsite communities into on site communities. In-built forums, live chat, newsletters etc.

I don't know how well this would work, but I will say that communities are all over the place now. Alliance forums have always existed, as well as live chat. It used to be that everyone used IRC. There was the game channel and alliances had their own channels, but you were all on the same server and could hop around between channels in one place. Discord has replaced IRC as the most prevalent client now, but my alliance uses Slack, for example. So now I need to be in Slack and Discord. Other alliances may use one or both of these, or maybe they use another alternative. I can't keep up.

Another issue I see with new player retention is simply a fault in the design of the game. You begin protected for a couple of weeks but then if you don't join an alliance, you will be raided out of the game. I'm not advocating peace mode for tenured nations, but why not allow new nations to remain on beige until their ready to come out? After the initial 2 weeks, you could penalize their growth a bit or limit improvements (there's a wide variety of options to make this feasible) so that they're encouraged to find an alliance and leave beige but not force them to do so.

Lastly, the war system definitely needs to be tweaked. I'm glad this discussion on military changes has been started. I know the game has survived for just over 6 years and that's a testament to the dedication Alex has put into it, as well as the player support for it. But that doesn't mean the current trajectory is sustainable. War is the pulse of this game. It needs some work.

I have no qualms with just removing alliance bank looting altogether. In my opinion, it's a mostly avoided mechanic anyway through "offshore" alliance banks, and therefore removing it would remove the clutter and confusion of additional 1-man alliances being created and recreated constantly.

You could also implement requirements for alliance creation to help with the issue of one man alliances...cost 1 credit to create an alliance, nation age must be “x” days, and so forth.

Remove alliance bank looting so there's no point in having an offshore. Otherwise, they will always exist. Requiring 5 people on the AA would mean an intelligent AA would split their entire membership into groups of 5, and play hot potato with the bank to dodge beiges.

This is true but removal of looting would make the game pointless. Nations would deposit everything in alliance banks with no fear of ever losing anything. War would become meaningless as rebuilds would be easily funded.

I can think of ways to exploit every suggestion provided in this thread so far and several of them have been pointed out by others. Still, something being done is better than nothing, imo.

  5. Unpopular opinion: I agree. “Offshore accounts” were not an intended game mechanic. They’re a loophole. The ability to loot alliance banks adds a layer of risk that affects strategy, as it was meant to be. This “workaround” stifles that.

That being said, I don’t know that the solution presented will do anything more than make it a slightly more inconvenient, but still completely doable option.

  6. I feel like a relic from a time long ago.  Hell, I am.  I've been in nation sims since 2006 and the last time I was actively playing PW was probably 1 1/2 - 2 years ago.  Back then, it was all about the iRC.  Now, it seems everyone is on Discord.  Well, no clue how that works.  I have an account but I don't see a way to browse or find channels or anything.  I see an option to create or join a server but is there a list on here somewhere to get me places...like a list of servers, channels or whatever for alliances?

Six digit ID's? I'll stick to my 2 digit one. #13 life baby.

Always regretted deleting my initial account. Think my nation was #70 something. I was glad to be a part of this game in it’s infancy. Good times. Happy to see it still finding success. Alex will never satisfy everyone but he cares and it shows. Shout out to the handful of old timers still out there.

  8. Can't speak to the rest of your post, but as for forums, they've switched forums several times over the years.

Maybe they just designed them the same. I recall the same forums for the last 2-3 years at least, but my memory has never been my strongest quality. :)

I guess what I'm getting at is that the Guardian brand was always under the same administration/ownership, regardless of game titles, as far as I can remember. This is the first time in my memory that doesn't seem to be the case.

  9. Can't help but feel like this is the final nail for the Guardian I've always known, dating back to long before Orbis. Is all of the old guard gone now? (pardon the pun).

Just saying that I've seen leaders come and go, gov changes, charter changes, but always a core group and the same forums throughout. Is that all over now? Been out of the loop a while.

  10. I am happy to have been a part in re-establishing the Republic and I'm honored to serve as Vice Chair to the Chancellor.  Zygon is a very competent individual who I've had the pleasure of working with the last couple of weeks .  We are in need of experienced people to flesh out our government and help the alliance grow.  We'd love to have you if you're looking for something fresh!

  11. It is not really a dev group tbh. It is more an advisory board for the CEO. Unfortunately, it is not working very well and part of this is transparency. I doubt you will get much from their minutes.

It would be far easier to simply unhide the boards and restrict posting rights to the associated membergroup.

This would only result in more topics flooding the suggestions forum with players referencing the topics there and continuing the discussion in duplicate topics.

I'm no longer in the group. I never contributed to it. At one time, I was highly active and very much in tune with game mechanics, and I was added. Then I went inactive and eventually I was dropped. At this point, the game has changed so much, I wouldn't be an asset to the group.

The point is, from what I saw during my time of having access, people left politics at the door. Their actions outside of that forum in no way reflected on their conversations in it. I never saw a time where they had advanced notice from Sheepy and time to prepare with a heads up for what he was going to implement. It was serving it's purpose, exactly the way Sheepy described it earlier in this thread.

I can understand how some players take offense or feel shunned by not being included. It's the nature of creating a private forum and then having those not included learn about it. But I think the pros of it outweigh the cons and to make it viewable by everyone would create numerous problems, including the one I started this post with.

  12. As of now the ads or horrendously annoying. The ones that I have had the displeasure of seeing are childish and extremely unprofessional. Sure this is a game and you're meant to have fun, but throwing huge images that a random player threw together in 30 seconds on Paint right in your face is horrible. They're likely a huge turn off for new players as they would have no understanding of any possible underlying meaning or the event/person referenced in them. Why am I looking at a picture of "potato soup?" Why is this player threatening to destroy other advertisers? These ads have just been stupid. There is no other word for them. Absolutely stupid. Anybody who thinks they are appropriate should be ashamed of themselves and seriously consider growing up.

    If you keep the ads:

    1) Make them smaller and less intrusive.

    2) Raise the standards of approval.

    3) Provide a free option to permanently turn them off and make it clear that this option exists.

I can barely escape the !@#$ posts on these forums and now you're throwing them in my face. It disgusts me.

This sums up everything I was going to post. You never get a second chance at a first impression. Keep the silliness elsewhere. There's a place for everything. Ads in the actual game is not the place for spam.
