Personally, I think that if you win a war then the opposing nation should suffer larger economic consequences. Rioting, depression, etc lasting like a week. Reduced income and resource harvesting.

It's a tactic that works well against stronger alliances, and one TEst has used several times to topple groups at the top before.
The politics part comes into play by convincing/persuading like minded alliances to join together for that single purpose.
Everyone thinks the world is stagnant and the powers that be are locked into their spots. In reality, a months time could see a dramatic change in the power structure of our world. All it would take is someone with the brains and willpower to start the process.

Not sure if its been suggested, but a tweak to the in game mail system would be awesome. Alliance announcements are a bit clunky, and a mass mail for alliances would be better.
Also, the mail you get from trades and attacks is overwhelming. Perhaps they would be better as a sort of notice system, or simply a single mail upon declaration to both parties.
