  1. Possible that the phrase "opening shots" is in poor taste, given the timing and proximity to the Paris attacks...

fwiw, the opening shots were meant in the terminology of liquor shots...we'll be raising our glasses to honor the lost and the survivors in France.

  2. The idea of alliance benefits (i.e. controls) is good...as is the idea of giving a percentage income bonus.  As nations grow the value of $1,000,000 becomes almost inconsequential.

However the idea of resetting the city / project timer is too overpowered in my opinion, and genuinely moves to a pay-to-win model.

  3. This may be a game mechanic, but it seems counter-intuitive.

If Beige is a time for a nation to rebuild, I can understand allowing passive espionage (gather intel), but why would attack espionage (kill spies / military be allowed)???

If it isn't...then it is a bug as this happened on the test server today...

I've been on beige since last night, so all 4 of these were run against my test nation under beige 'protection'.

If it is by design, I'd contend that at the least espionage should be limited to gather intel while a nation is being allowed to rebuild.

  4. I recommend adding an option to summarize new messages into a single daily update. A happy medium between getting a hundred emails a day and not knowing if you got a response until you logged back into the game.

I agree...ideally it could have the following options:

    1) Receive an e-mail with each message

    2) Receive a digest once per turn

    3) Receive a digest once per day

    4) Receive a digest once per week

    5) Don't receive e-mails

  5. Umm...content anyone?  Fark thread titles include:

    Musty Poptart's Boob Emporium (NSFW)

    Glorious Camel Toe (NSFW)

    Farkistan Bargain Booty Basement (NSFW)

    Wheeling's Next Top Call Girl

    Just Bacon

Tell Us About Your First-World Problems....

...and yeah somewhere on the forums we have game-related threads...

  6. It is automated from the policies as discussed above, and Sheepy has stated that it is designed to be irrelevant to revenue calculations.  As tax rates go up, income goes down to make the calculation constant.

  7. I'm no DBA.. but I think if 99,999.99 is a limit based on storage/performance, you're using the wrong data type

MySQL's documentation is a black hole when you get into this stuff, but as I understand it, a decimal type (my guess of what you're using, if you're using VARCHAR or similar, there's no help for you) stores 99,999.99 in 4 bytes (3 bytes for the 99,999 and 1 for the .99).

If you really like type decimal, you have the same storage requirements by going to a limit of 999,999.99.

Since we're only using positive values for resource storage, you would get better storage efficiancy and performance by using an unsigned mediumint which would up the maximum to 167,772.15 in only 3 bytes (formatting of the decimal would be done for display only).  If you moved to an unsigned int, your maximum would be 42,949,672.95 in 4 bytes.

This would increase performance, storage efficiency and better prepare the game for the long-haul.  You may think 99,999 steel in a single nation is unfathomable, but wait until you have nations that are 7+ years old...

I'm sure there are people playing who are far more knowledgeable of sql optimization who could chime in and affirm/correct my understanding.

This...with just 8 cities I run a significant negative run on a few resources.  It will be a while, but at some point 99,999 won't be a large enough stock to withstand a war effort which may/may not involve blockades.  This should be fixed before it becomes a significant problem.

Also, for those nations (not me) that are playing the trade market for profit the artificial limit of 99,999 would be a problem for them as well.

  8. he threatened to retaliate against my alliance for the whole ordeal. When I declared war on the guy, he was unaffiliated with an alliance. The guy had left an alliance, but he did not have any messages saying he was still in Utopia. Heck, he is still not in an alliance. His bio reads this, which is in Latin "Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori". If his alliance is going to offer protection to a guy who is not in any alliances, he should at least have a message in English saying this

First...the latin translates (approximately) to "It is sweet and glorious to die for one's country."

As for the rules of international war, etc I'm not sure how well established and/or standardized those are.  Best bet if the guy joined an alliance is to peace out.  If the other alliance then threatens to attack, they would be an aggressor, and if I were you I would hope you and your alliance have friends and treaties that will discourage such action.

Standardizing rules of engagement, etc would be a 'pipe dream'.  There is little agreement on the virtues of raiding in the first place, then you get into the definition of an alliance, and at the end of the discussion very few points would get universal agreement.

    Good luck.

  9. Land currently lowers pop density and (if you have waste improvement slots on food, you get more food)...correct?

I would argue that the impact of land on farms could be enhanced (maybe change the multiplier slightly??)...also crossing over a certain amount of land should release space for additional mines / farms / military improvements.

While this wouldn't directly impact score, it would create more strategy.  Maybe something where every 2K land would release +1 more of each type of these improvements.  Otherwise there comes a point where your build becomes pre-determined by the limitations of each improvement type.

While this wouldn't directly impact score, the increased possibility of raw resources / military could have an indirect impact on score and growth.

  10. Hmmm...not sure where to put myself.  I generally have conservative values, but I believe the government should stay the hell out of most religious social issues completely.  I'm a far right fiscal capitalist...but when it comes to social issues I'd generally prefer to have issues not be mandated by government, and allow churches and local governments to govern themselves in these areas.  So somewhere between a Libertarian and an Anarchist I guess?
