  1. I think fortify is an interesting idea but it has really limited utility other than increasing resistance.

Fortify should be renamed to "Prepare Defenses", with four options:

"Deploy SAM Batteries" increase resistance by 5, 10% chance to destroy every attacking enemy aircraft (every enemy plane rolls to survive), costs 10 gas, alu and mun per city, is exhausted after 2 air attacks

"Lay Sea Mines" increase resistance by 5, 10% chance to destroy every attacking enemy ship (every enemy ship rolls to survive), costs 10 steel and mun per city, is exhausted after 2 sea attacks

"Plant Anti-Tank Mines" increase resistance by 5, 10% chance to destroy every attacking tank (every enemy tank rolls to survive), costs 10 gas, steel and mun per city, is exhausted after 2 ground attacks

"Plant Anti-Personnel Mines" increase resistance by 5, 10% chance to destroy every attacking soldier (every enemy soldier rolls to survive), costs 10 mun per city, is exhausted after 2 ground attacks

You can stack up to 3 of each type so you can deal up to 30% kill chance if you've had enough time to pile on SAM sites for instance.  A really lucky roll of SAM batteries could take out the whole attacking air force if the RNG gods hate them enough.

This would give more tools in the defender's toolbox, where a piled on defender could work to grind down their attackers a little bit, enough that relief forces have an easier time.

Best "fix fortify" suggestion I've seen so far!

  2. To help nerf aircraft, my thoughts are this:

Ground Control no longer limits the number of enemy aircraft that can be used, but if you have Ground Control, each successive ground attack destroys some amount of the opponent's planes, my thoughts on numbers are 3% for Immense Triumph, 2% for Moderate Success, 1% for Pyrrhic Victory. That makes ground forces a reasonable counter to a superior airforce.

Next, Air Superiority should be changed so that it is not a direct counter to Ground Forces. Instead, it should help to counter Fortify - if you opponent has Air Superiority over you, Fortifying only increases your resistance by 5 (instead of 10.)

My thinking is that would make it possible (although still very difficult) to defeat an opponent who is only using Fortify in war, while also nerfing Aircraft and giving them a counter in a rock-paper-scissors fashion. Ships would still somewhat counter Ground because they're the fastest way to win a war, and you could just outrace an opponent who had a superior ground force if you had a superior naval force.

Just a spitball of an idea, so I appreciate feedback here.

Air is way over powered when fighting against Navy. I had complete fleets of ships wiped out by a few air attacks. With no air losses from the enemy.

IRL Air is always most effective vs ground forces (google "iraq highway of death" if you want a perfect example)... any attempt to sink a fleet of 10+ coordinated modern warships would see at least 80%+ loss of aircraft in a real world scenario. By the time your close enough to shoot at them they can shoot at you, often with more effective and more numerous Anti-air missiles. The way it plays now its like the enemy is bombing unarmed cargo ships.

Anyway... just my 2 cents but if you want to nerf air I'd look at navy.

On the resistance side... I don't know about mechanics BUT I do know IRL the only real way to crack an underdog force in "fortify" mode is via ground forces. Lots of ground forces, normally in bloody street to street/village to village clearance operations. Maybe ground control could power up that way?

  3. While I would be for this, I think one consequence is that winning alliances may force city deletions upon losing alliances.

Which is exactly what would happen. It would only take one or two coalition beatdowns that end in surrender city deletion terms for the game to split into a super-untouchable tier and a bottom beatdown tier. I've seen it in other games and while people initially think its great to be "winning" it very quickly kills the "fun" in playing. You need a certain base level of protection for loosing factions so they can eventually rebuild and stir up trouble again to keep things interesting.

I attempted 2 ground attacks today (post update) against a nation with zero defending soldiers or tanks and somehow managed utter failures on both?

#1 attack I sent in 100 soldiers and #2 I sent 500... is there a victory odds penalty to using a low force?

Not sure if that's pure bad luck or a post update bug? I've never seen it happen before vs a nation with no defending force?

  5. Finally, I don't have to get rekt anymore by some random arrgh! member.

Oh hey that was me! No hard feelings man, if it makes you feel any better I only hit you with the cheep shot cause your mates were kicking my teeth in. They got me as good as I got you I can assure you of that!

    Good luck on the rebuild.
