As a result, the Dutch government formed the A. James Commission to investigate allegations. Although the commission was dissolved mysteriously only 2 months into the investigation, many of the documents and records it acquired entered the public record against the wishes of the Company, providing historians with an insight into the inner working of the DEIC. The following communiqué is from right before the conflict broke out, with the Chairman of the Company informing the Governor-General of Batavia of the origins and expected resolution of the conflict from the Company’s perspective. Source: Greetings Governor-General, As I’m sure you’re aware, a group of natives calling themselves “Terminus Est†have become increasing hostile of late. Attempts at interaction have always ended poorly, usually with conflict, but their home island is located in a strategic position along a trade route to China, so possession of the territory for a supply port is vital if we hope to increase the volume of our trade with the region. Unfortunately, we’ve learned that a branch of the British East India Company known as “The Syndicate†has been secretly supporting these natives, supplying them with weapons and encouraging them to attack our shipping. This situation is unacceptable, as The Syndicate and the greater BEIC have already stolen a great deal of our territory and trade in India and Ceylon, so any further disruptions to our wider network cannot be allowed. A great deal of profit is at stake Governor-General, and as a result, we have decided to act. An expedition has been put together consisting of 10,000 soldiers and 32 ships, led by the flagship VOC Akerendam, which sailed from Amsterdam 3 days ago at the time of writing. They should reach you in Batavia shortly after you receive this. Our allied native kingdoms of United Purple Nations and Brotherhood of the Clouds have promised to send forces as well, and once assembled, will assault Terminus Est and any forces from The Syndicate present on the island. Make no mistake, the attack will succeed, we shall drive those who oppose us from the island and make it a useful outpost of the Company.
