Sailor Jerry
So where are all the stars in the background? Total stage setups......we never made it. If we had, we probably would have had a small base up there already. If we have gone from room sized computers that could barely add 2+2 in 50s to todays smartphones that have about a million times the computing power of those old computers, why haven't we figured out a way to make sustainable living on the moon?

Space travel is extremely expensive. As for stars, have you ever wondered why you can't see stars in the day time? Why is the sky blue? Why does light not look as bright as it does in the dark? We have figured it out, it just hasn't been implemented due to the cost. If it costs so much, even nowadays, just to send a few people to the ISS, imagine how much it would cost to send an entire colony to the moon! It just isn't time yet. Computer power isn't a limit on spaceflight, and it hasn't been for a long time. The Apollo guidance computer was about as powerful as the average calculator today, and it worked just fine getting astronauts to the moon. The reason we don't have a moon base? Money. If a country like the US wanted to, it could start planning and setting up a functional moon base right now, and we could probably have a permanent base in a few years, with a lot of effort. Of course, this would be extremely expensive, and without any real reason to have a moon base right now (there is no oil on the moon after all) it is highly unlikely that one will be built in the near future. 1 Quote "They say the secret to success is being at the right place at the right time. If it costs so much, even nowadays, just to send a few people to the ISS, imagine how much it would cost to send an entire colony to the moon! It just isn't time yet. Well there is still that plan to send a whole colony to Mars. That would be awesome, but even the slightest mistake would mean the deaths of everyone on board. The amount of research, practice and calculations alone that go into any space exploration (manned or not) is huge. Sending any given object into space usually takes years of prep and re-prep because as said above, one mistake is all it takes. Dwemyrn
What if we didn't land on the moon and the moon instead landed on us and the lives we live are a dream falsely projected in another dimension where we did land on the moon and the person dreaming the reality of the other dimension just has really bad PTSD so he shrugs off our reality like it's repetitive bad dream? Lan
When the oil runs out the moon is gonna be quite sought after. The moon has something that's worth trillions. One thing. Hydrogen3 You mean tritium? What's so special about that? It's a byproduct from nuclear reactors so we can make it ourselves right here. Though it's not going not power your car any time soon. Or ever really. Edited August 4, 2015 by Lan Quote Drip, drip, drop ヽ( 。ヮ゚)ノ "Jump on the crazy brain gravy train!" (。□゚ノ)ノ
TheNG
You mean tritium? What's so special about that? It's a byproduct from nuclear reactors so we can make it ourselves right here. Though it's not going not power your car any time soon. Or ever really. I believe Harms meant Helium-3, which is not only very different from Tritium (Hydrogen-3), but potentially much more useful. Helium-3 is a stable 3 neutron isotope of helium that coincidentally results from the decay of Tritium. The reason Harms brings it up is because Helium-3 can be used in fusion, either combined with Deuterium (Hydrogen-2) or with itself. While this requires higher temperatures than the standard Deuterium-Tririum fusion, Helium-3 fusion has the big advantage of not producing very harmful high-energy neutrons or radioactive waste, which is a big plus. The sun expels a lot of Helium-3, and while the Earth's atmosphere defects almost all of it, the moon has no atmosphere, so Helium-3 that hits it embeds in the lunar soil, thus the moon has (relatively speaking) a lot of Helium-3. Thus, if we ever get fusion working, something that gets tossed around a lot is mining the moon to supply Earth with Helium-3 for lots of fusion, though it has other uses as well. I believe something like 40 tons of He-3 would be needed to power a US-sized country for a year. Of course, there are big issues, namely the fact that He-3 on the moon is pretty spread out, and you'd have to strip-mine enormous quantities of lunar soil to get enough, plus the extraction process from that soil is complicated and expensive. In addition, He-3 fusion, as mentioned before, is very high energy, and we are not close to getting even lesser energy fusion to work. Nevertheless, it does have the potential to be an excellent energy source, China in particular is talking a lot about mining the moon at some point in the future. Links: The wikipedia page for Helium-3 is here, while this article does a good job of laying out the possibilities, and this article is long, but goes into a lot of interesting detail.
