In-game Banner ads for politics

I agree with under. Excellent idea, allow images as well.  I think you'll see much more use out of it that way.

Also you probably want some screening method for all ads, text or image, rather than auto-approval. If any ads (even text ads) get approved without review, knowing our player base you're going to get some awful troll ads that will end up hurting the game.

Maybe have some trustworthy and active players review ads or something similar to Overwatch in CS:GO. Borderline images would be a problem but they could probably escalate that to you in those cases.

How do I disable it if I don't want to see it?

You don't.

I think a filter and the ability to report ads should suffice.

Manually checking all images would be way, way too much of a hassle.

What about pricing? Does that seem fair? I want it to be equivalent to 1 credit, but I thought $1,000,000 would be a reasonable option too, yeah?

I think we've got enough active, trustworthy players to be able to set up a system for approving them. We could choose some people that you know well enough to trust, and just have a queue that they can run through when they want to and approve images. Every image needs to be approved by two people before it can be run, and if one of the two people who looks at it decides it shouldn't be in the game then it doesn't go in. That way ads can't just slip through by one person troll voting.

The only problem would be if someone was denying ads that deserved to be in, but in that case they could run it by you and you could find out who denied it, and remove them from being allowed to do so.

Also I think the pricing is fair. It gives slight incentive to spend credits on the option, but it's nothing ridiculously expensive with in-game money.

Only two? I was thinking three at a minimum.

A game called ROBLOX

Ah roblox, the cringy memories.

For example, requiring them to be in PNG format would be a good one (as that means no gifs and no compression), requiring them to not feature racism, maybe upholding a quality standard so that really, really bad ads aren't forced (but that last one is questionable because at that point we need to decide what qualifies as bad enough to be excluded)

Meh, PNG is that good for ads. Ads arent suppose to be high quality or sprites. JPEG is more ad-like.

First can you darken the background color somewhat? As it is depending on the angle it sometimes fades completely to white.

Second need max dimensions for both imgs & the ad overall.

Player generated ads? This sounds like a good idea. I played this MafiaWars-esque game that have player generated ads, for me they adds somekind of immersion to the game, since the ads talks about in-game stuff.

Personally, I am not going to be paying that to just have text up there.

There is a recruitment forum for alliances to do all the text stuff - and image should they choose to do that. If I want to text my information to people, I'll just send out recruitment messages. I think images, of a certain size, should be allowed to go up there. It would take a lot to manually screen all of those images, but just don't make it harder than it needs to be- use the filter and report button.

I'm a graphics guy - I would spend a ton of money to throw ads up there for my alliance and I know others would too....

Halve it to 250 characters and I think it's a good starting point, for ingame advertising. Little icon in the top right, for reporting advertising, also.

About the only other thing I'd suggest, is making it a monospace font. That would encourage text art and be a good concession for those who want images.

It worked well on eRepublik for a while.  I'm not mad keen on the boring text style though.

They looked more like this and they were displayed down the right hand side of the page.  Not saying you should necessarily do the same.  It was pretty effective though.

One thing to be very careful of though is exploits.  eRepublik had a lot of problems with malicious links and hacks of this system which I'm pretty sure is the reason why they removed them in the end.  I know you have a warning for external links from alliances but if anyone is able to place an advert then you've got a lot more potential people and clicks to worry about.

While I don't particularly like ads, this method is certainly a more palatable solution, and has the potential to become a decent feature.

One thing that might be interesting (if possible with the coding) is to give the ability to target specific groups. For example, the ability to advertise to my alliance regarding some internal program. Or even better, the ability to bombard my rival alliance's citizens with propaganda, telling them all their base are belong to me, and so fourth. The ability to wage a propaganda war, with alliances trying to buy up more space on a particular alliance, could be a huge source of donations, and added creativity to the game.

This ability would also allow a boost to recruitment, and make it more personalized for the receiver. New nations could get ads from alliances ready to show them the ropes, higher score nations could get invitations to the "elite" alliances, and socialist/capitalist/fascist nations could get messages addressing them as hey are. Besides giving recruiters better tools, it also helps to make ads more relevant and meaningful for the players seeing them.

I personally think that text ads are completely useless. It's just an exponentially more expensive and really less effective version of mass-messaging recruitment.

Seriously, the only way to make this worth-while is with picture ads. Mass-messaging is free, can be longer than 250 words, and can be targeted specifically to new players.

Image ads or no ads.

When considering the text limit, if possible bb tags & urls should not be counted. Also a preview would be good to make sure everything is in order before you drop a mil on this.

You don't.

I think a filter and the ability to report ads should suffice.

That's incredibly naive, and you'll regret it when an ad goes up to the effect of "All N*ggers should be killed," or lauding sex with children, or whatever other !@#$ed up thing inevitably gets past the filter, and remains up for hours before it's removed.

Only two? I was thinking three at a minimum.

(The purpose behind the filter evasion was to show how incredibly easy it is to evade filters. It's ludicrously easy. There has yet to be a filter designed by man, on any website, that isn't trivially defeated.)

@Pax, I'm 17 yrs old, and played Roblox from 2008 to 2013. Roblox Ads were so much fun!

Hey mate, I'm 18 and played from 2009 to 2013 (though I still hop on occasionally, I basically played daily until 2013). If you ever hop on again you should add me.

Only two? I was thinking three at a minimum.

The reason I said two was because I was thinking it would be selected from a very limited pool of people that Sheepy thinks are trustworthy, rather than a lot of people who may or may not have the game's best interest in mind.

While it's possible that some of the people Sheepy would decide upon could turn out to purposely let bad content through, it's not very likely that both of the people who do so with an ad would be trying to sabotage the game. And if an ad gets reported, or the other person who moderates an ad says no, then the Sheeps can look at it and go "yeah, that dude isn't allowed to moderate the ads anymore" and suddenly we've got an improved moderator pool.

Meh, it isn't to hard to find people to moderate it. Although, I actually play the game and deal with a lot of people and sheepy... doesn't.

Targeting is a must, but if there's targeting there has to be a bid-based system, not just a random selection.

I think links should only be able to go pages on the forums or in the game. Maybe to alliance forums as well, but only if the alliance was significant enough to not be a sockpuppet.

I believe images ads are a must, but I'd move them to the sidebar rather than have it up top as a banner. Less intrusive that way.

Secure. Contain. Protect.

The way you have it set up with being able to buy an ad for 1 credit or 1 mil allows people to circumvent the 6 credit/mo limit by letting people with surplus credits offer to make ads for people in exchange for cash. A person can offer to make an ad for $900k on the market. Someone pays that nation $900k and a credit is used to put up the ad.

This also works currently with flags or pips.

If you keep adding cosmetic bonuses in this manner, more opportunities will arise and will further undermine the effort you made to limit credit redemption/sales.
