I think we were on pretty good terms with the pirates. Arrgh are good people, despite the immoralities of being raiders.

To sad to see Communists joining Pirates. As a communists, I hope you guys feel happy to work for money, as merc, without any ideology.

Or

May be you can restart your nations and join your old comrade Xenodolf, it is pretty great here in low score range. We can spread communism through blood and struggle, if not through peace :P Do not worry about all the money spent in infrastructure and building new cities, the fun you get in raiding other alliances (and spreading communism too through blood) is far better.

NOTE: We can attack Mensa too :) And not just them, we will attack all these capitalist alliances.

I dont understand whats the point of staying in the lower tier so long???

I am very competative and I aim to be one of the top 10 players but I want to know what fun you guys find in being on the bottom for such a long time??

All we do in bottom tier is,

(1) Raid (inactive nations) to get money.

(2) Attack (active nations) when you have enough money.

Attacking other alliance nations and retaliating alliances (which are defending their members) is a great way to have fun. If a raider challenges big alliances like UPN, VE it gets very interesting. We are also competitive, but in a different fashion. Of course I may not affect the politics of Orbis as much, our rankings may be low, but handling big nations is a bit dull, too slow. Raiding other nations in alliance is all about fun, pure fun.

No one can do the same with higher score, the loss would be substantial, so it will not be fun anymore. War is serious issue for top players, but not here.

Although I do not like authoritarian organization like communists tend to be, it is sad to see a leftist alliance falling apart. :(

Pirates are more anarchistic, so I think it is cool to work with them. Good luck making the world fairer! B)

:P Down with capitalism! :P

Leftist doesn't always mean people who fight violently. It is an ideology, which different people approach differently. A lot of communist leaders killed people, but again we don't talk about socialist nations which remained peaceful. By the end of Stalin's death, 1/3rd of world nations were socialist/communists, not all had tons of guns.

In todays world, Nordic countries rank high in socialist standards and they are the most peaceful countries.

Damned, sucks to see you and Socialist International go, Hereno. You guys are about the most colourful alliance in this place, with the exception of GPA but a lot less annoying and trigger happy than them.

I wish you best of luck and hope you will come soon after your heartbreak's over.

Pirate ships were largely egalitarian and operated like co-operatives, with many electing their captains. Really, they were a bunch of working class stiffs getting paid by the aristocracy to raid the merchants of unfriendly states. Although once you're out on the ocean, dead men tell no tales. Arrgh! is an incredibly accurate portrayal of piracy in the context of P&W, and piracy was a lot more in line with socialism than you'd think. How do you think a bunch of working class people got the kind of money to have their own political parties? Apart from the fact that some of them were from the upper classes, such as Lenin, they robbed banks. Stalin robbed banks for years to support himself and the communist movement in Tsarist Russia. If you're not willing to break the law, you're never going to get ahead - the laws were made by the people who already have money, and they are designed to keep you down. The real criminals wear suits and employ both private prison wardens and the drug runners both inside and out.

Xenodolf, the Nordic countries are not socialist countries. Socialism requires worker ownership of the means of production; the Nordic countries are better classified as welfare states, or social democratic states. They also rely heavily on their oil production to sustain their high standards of living. Venezuela, Saudi Arabia, Norway... the only reason countries like these can support welfare states is from state-owned oil revenue. And yes, there is a difference between "state-owned" and "worker-owned" means of production. But actually, the Nordic countries have been going through a massive economic liberalisation in the past few years, and they're already starting to feel it. Capitalism is unsustainable; the "democratic socialist" notions that we can just reform capitalism so that everybody has a nice big welfare state aren't based in reality. Look at how skimpy the US welfare system is compared to Europe, and understand that we have the most powerful economy in the world. Europe and North America are benefiting from a sort of global economic colonialism through which cheap labor and cheap resources are extracted from disadvantaged countries and pumped into the US as consumer products. But if the Chinese start getting paid what we would have to be paid to make those iPads, the cost is going to go up, meaning our quality of life goes down. Unless, of course, they can find a new source of labor. But they're steady running out of that, along with all of the other resources that we waste and throw in landfills by the truckload.

Some people think the solution to the problem of scarcity is nationalism, with high tariffs and militarism. To, like the US, attempt to dominate the capitalist system and exploit others to increase your own quality of life. I tend to think the best solution is to just get rid of capitalism entirely. But people think that it's utopian to have democracy in the workplace. Or that people just aren't good enough to recognize that it's in all of our long-term interests to abolish capitalism and to then cooperate in doing so. But, well, !@#$ them, we'll just kill them and throw them in the fi-- no I'm just kidding.

That should make you raid other wealthy nations for your own purpose, not to work as a hitman for more wealthy nations. Arrgh is more like a raiders for hire, they do it for other alliance members. Stalin robbed the bank for his own ideology, no one paid him to rob the banks. He would never join a group of pirates who will rob a bank after getting paid by bosses. :P

Sorry about the wrong information.

Xenodolf,

And speaking of Xenodolf, did your alliance follow socialism in this game? :P And according to you how can an alliance be socialist in-game? I would say by sharing resources evenly, refunding a portion of tax amount to low score nations and developing together.

So Hereno, how are we going to identify who will be the first up against the wall when the revolution comes?

A lot of the people on this forum seem counter-revolutionary at times. Maybe we'll start with an animal sacrifice. Sheepy's back from vacation now...

Pirates and privateers were not a mutually-exclusive thing. Pirates might take contracts to raid certain shipping lanes or certain countries, but they'd also raid other people along the way, sometimes even including ships from the same crown they were under contract of (or their allies).

---

The internal administrative philosophy of the Socialist International was "New Democracy". Used by Mao Zedong to describe the state capitalism of ostensibly socialist China, on Orbis it was just a pseudo-communist justification for whatever idea I wanted to try out at the time. The idea behind it was the application of socialist methodology to the unique economic situation of Orbis, similar to how New Democracy was the application of Marxism-Leninism to the unique economic situation of China. Communism, of course, entails the elimination of hierarchy, but Orbis demands hierarchy because it is a simulation of the global capitalist political economy. So we were a worker's paradise: the more you did for the alliance, the more responsibility and information you got, and the more you got to make the decisions about what went on. It also functioned to keep out spies because they'd have to actually do work for the alliance in order to challenge up.

At first, our economic programs were designed to dump money on the active players from the inactives. Later on, once the active players got large, we switched to a welfare state system and dumped money on our lower tier. When we started out our tax rates were as high as 30-50% to maximize the amount we took from inactives, but toward the end they were down to 5/5%.

(OOC) Does this mean I won't get pornographic spam emails from Jemmm on your forum server anymore? (/OOC)

It looked like you guys had been struggling, and I admire you for sticking it out as long as you did. Have fun as a pirate, Hereno!
