Geronimo
But how does that happen? Is some alliance trying to do some weird stuff? It happens because some things, for example: 1. The vast majority of nations are in the northern hemisphere, so if in the northern hemisphere is on winter. The food's price will be rocketing since it will be high demands of food during the winter. 2. War. During pre-war, the prices of aluminum and steel will be exploding. It's because of many nations involved in the war, would like to buy aluminum and steel to build an army.
Memph
Also some resources are more expensive because they cost more to produce. Food costs about $10 to produce, uranium costs $1667 to produce.
Grillick
Food's production cost is highly variable. Quote "It's hard to be a team player when you're omnipotent." - Q

Memph
Food's production cost is highly variable. It ranges anywhere from $5 to $20 depending on the seasons and how much land you have (unless you have some stupid amount of land like 200 or 2500 but most have around 400-1200). So still very low. Of course this doesn't include the opportunity cost of not using that improvement slot for commerce or something.
