I launched a missile and destroyed an air force base plus 36 aircrafts, how? The max should be 18

Sorry I lauched 6 missiles on 6 nations and now I don't remember the bugged one

This sometimes happens if they somehow had more than their maximum aircraft prior to the missile launch, though I don't remember the specifics as to how to reproduce that. It might be due to power actually, are any of your targets not fully powered?

Happened again with this guy https://politicsandwar.com/nation/id=167981 but this time I destroyed 72 aircrafts

Yes, I think it may be because their air force exceeds what their improvements can support.

I'm curious as to how it's possible for someone to lose their military improvements without losing the military contained within it prior to these incidents?

Trick question: Did the number of their aircrafts drop after that? 
Once you have an answer to this, I believe you will find how you destroyed 72 or 36 aircrafts.

It is an old bug actually. When you destroy improvements, although it shows destroyed X units, the units dont get subtracted from the main army. If they had 100 units, they will continue to have 100 units even if you got a message saying X units were kil. Also, they can use that X part 'killed'
