Militarisation

With world tensions high, and the potential need to come to the exiled Scottish government's aid, a build-up of military force would be necessary. The 4% military budget would be put to good use, in order to build a military capable of local force projection and self-defence. The following measures would be undertaken:

  • The expansion of the USNE Air Force to have at least 600 modern combat aircraft, including Eurofighter Typhoons. Estimated cost of $20 billion.
  • The production of 500 more Stridsvagn 122 tanks, making a total of 700. Estimated cost of $4 billion.
  • The opening of army recruitment, to fill ranks to a maximum of 500,000 people. Estimated cost of $10-20 billion.
  • The creation of elite divisions, including marines, cyberwarfare and insurgency. Estimated cost of $2 billion.
  • The expansion of the navy into a modern force, including 6 submarines, 5 destroyers, 4 frigates, 2 cruisers (with missile capabilities) and one aircraft carrier. Estimated cost of $13 billion.
  • The integration of asymmetrical warfare into USNE military doctrine. Estimated cost of $1 billion.

In order to fulfil such demands in a timely manner, elements of Keynesian economics were adopted, putting the USNE on a wartime footing, even though no war was in progress. It was estimated that all measures would be completed within a year as a result. However, this militarism was highly unpopular, and would lead to further unrest.

In their best attempt to support the USNE for their support of the Kingdom of Scotland, the Queen has decreed that the Allied States of America and the United States of Northern Europe to have Military Access to the lands currently held by the Kingdom of Scotland. Potentially, the Queen hoped this could open up relations with the two nations, and Scotland could act as a bridge for them to formally meet and also become friends.

The process for the construction of fission and fusion weapons would begin, with the hope of developing submarine-compatible delivery systems as well. Uranium was available in respectable quantities, and deuterium was easily available from seawater. The project would be completed in a year.

Large numbers of long-range radar systems were built near the country's borders, due to the need to get advanced warning of potential attacks. If numerical superiority was unachievable, then technological and logistical superiority were imperatives.

$5 billion were invested into developing an anti-ballistic missile defence system, with the hope of partially or fully nullifying the damage caused by a potential hostile large-scale missile attack.

The expansion ordered a year before was completed on time. A nuclear test occurred underground, for geological reasons as well as military. Missile tests were conducted, and performed to a high degree of accuracy, within the double digits of metres.

In response to widespread unrest resulting from the power vacuum in Europe, an agreement was made with a number of Baltic nations that the USNE would defend them from invaders, in exchange for a share of GDP ranging from 2 to 10%. Army and navy bases have been set up in the nations.

Over the course of the next year, the USNE would seek to increase its local power projection capabilities, by undertaking the following actions:

  • The expansion of the USNE Air force to have at least 1000 combat aircraft, excluding helicopters. Estimated cost of $30 billion.
  • The expansion of the navy to include 11 submarines (including 4 nuclear-armed ones), 8 destroyers, 7 frigates, 3 cruisers and 2 aircraft carriers. Estimated cost of $18 billion.
  • The launch of 15 reconnaissance satellites to track potential enemy movements and missile launches. Estimated cost of $2 billion.

The nuclear program was finally completed. 50 nuclear-tipped missiles were produced as a result. More would be produced, but only a small number, as nuclear weapons would exist as a last resort only. Two submarines were fitted with nuclear capabilities. A brief and conciliatory notice was put out, informing readers of the USNE's possession of WMDs as a last resort only. The notice neglected to mention capabilities, but assured readers that they were in compliance with UN regulations.

A statement from the Masrani Global Corporation

Quote

The Masrani Global believes hiding this information is too dangerous to be kept secret and without specs, there is no way to validate his claims of following UN regulations. Hereforth, the Masrani Global Corporation is formally requesting that the USNE to allow international inspectors to inspect their nuclear capabilities to ensure they follow the UN regulations. If they refuse, the Masrani Global Corporation will formally request summons with the UN to start an official investigation and will take the refusal as proof that the USNE is violating the recent UN rulings.

The USNE shall comply fully with this request. However, in the interests of national security, we request that no strategically sensitive information about our nuclear capabilities is made public unless it violates UN rulings.

The Masrani Global Corporation is glad to see you accepted our request and is assembling an independent group to inspect your nuclear facilities and nuclear weapons. We will also honor the request to keep sensitive information classified from the General Public

As a prosperous member of the UN, the Tanakosin Empire would like to send its own representatives to inspect the USNE and ensure all inspections are impartial and unbias to any hidden agendas. The Tanakosin Empire does not contribute in any, nor makes any preparation towards, European wars or claims in Europe, nor are there any gains. The Empress merely wants to show effort into being a Member, and formally requests the USNE allow for the Tanakosin Empire to assist in inspections, but does not make any threats or ultimatums should they decline.

The USNE grants your request to enter, as part of a UN group with other nations.
