Growing Unrest

Thousands have taken to the streets to protest against what some have claimed to be an 'alarming' rate of reforms undertaken by the new government. An unlikely and most likely temporary alliance between conservatives, religious fundamentalists and elements of the green movement has united under the common cause of stopping or reversing actions made by the government.

While divided on issues such as polygamy and military spending, the one thing all these protestors have in common is their disapproval of genetic engineering. In response to the recent bill ordering an investigation into human genetic engineering, protesters have threatened further actions if a future bill legalises it. Some have even suggested insurrection.

"A nation which treats its citizens as customisable items doesn't deserve to exist. We'll ensure, by all means necessary, and to our dying breaths, that such a bill doesn't pass. There'll be no compromise." says Alex Erikson, leader of the Genetic Heritage Foundation, an extremist anti-GM group.

Members of the USNE government have proposed a live and televised discussion about such issues, stating that 'it is important for all views to be considered'. While some demonstrators have slammed the proposition as an obvious trap, some of the organisers of the protests have agreed to appear on Q&A, the show in question.

Demonstrators have rioted on the streets, in response to the result of the second-strike referendum. Yesterday, 58 arrests were made, on account of property destruction. Police forces have been mobilised and kept on high alert throughout the nation. In Stockholm, demonstrators have staged sit-ins in Parliament House, as discussion of the report on genetic engineering continues.

Despite what it may seem, public approval for the Coalition remains high, at 69%. The recent reforms haven't so much turned supporters away, as they have galvanised opposition.

In a covert action, the Internationale has started a secret smuggling campaign in the favour of the protesters, transporting handguns and dealing it to protesters. The handguns would be specifically made so that they were to be dismantled and assembled at any notice. 1000 of the handgun will be smuggled over the course of a week and a half, focusing on the highest of anonymity when undergoing the transfer and dealership. No public statement would be given regarding the affair of the unrest as the Internationale was not to be seemed as picking sides.

The deals involved instructions to use it in self defense only, if it were to come on lethal action by the side of the government.

After the long-awaited Q&A episode, the shaky alliance between the protestors broke down. The government official had been intensely briefed on all predicted arguments the protestors would make, and so had easily emerged as the one in the right in the eyes of the public. He'd also managed to steer the discussion to points of contention between the protesting factions. The discussion quickly became a shouting match between 'tree-huggers and Bible-thumpers', as one Twitter commentator described it. Such images were seen by all watching, and it became clear that the factions held irreconcilable differences. Such was the plan from the beginning. Crowds of demonstrators turned against each other, and within a matter of days, united riots against the government had been replaced with simmering but disunited discontent.

An attempted mass shooting took place in Parliament House, shortly after the legalisation of research into human genetic engineering. A security guard noticed a man acting suspiciously, and when the man drew a gun, the guard quickly reacted, and threw himself on the gunman. In the ensuing struggle, the guard was killed, and the gunman was arrested. A state funeral is to be held next week.

Interrogation of the gunman revealed that other protesters now owned guns as well. Since the USNE had gun control, it was suspected that external groups were smuggling weapons into the country. Russian nationalist groups were suspected, but with no evidence, the USNE chose to closely monitor baggage entering by land, air and sea into the country. A stop-and-frisk program has found more guns, but their origin remains unknown.

A series of coordinated explosions have rocked the headquarters of GeneSys, a genetic engineering firm. 57 people were killed, including the bombers. In response, GeneSys has tightened security significantly, with armed guards stationed in the building and outside garden. The bombers' identities have been revealed to the public, and it has been revealed that they were members of the Warriors of Gaia, a militant and previously covert branch of the Genetic Heritage Foundation (GHF). Alex Erikson, the head of the GHF, has condemned the attack, but claimed that "GeneSys had it coming".

Because a suspected revolution would take over the northern European state, a British force of 100 Marines and 50 men of the Special Air Service would await commands to enter Scandinavian teritorries to break away the fighting. The planes and ships have a IFOR (Implementation Force) and UN symbol on them, as do the uniforms of the crews. Their starting points are from the air and naval bases constructed in Scotland during the crisis with Scandinavia. Currently the crew is awaiting approval from the current Scandinavian government to land them.

"Here speaks the Premier of the British Internationale, Jeremy Corbyn. Your feud with the people is no secret and it is slowly going a dark path which could lead to a split between the country, a fight between the bourgeoisie and proletariat. It starts with a small protest, every time, and it ends in bloodshed. The Implementation Force, short IFOR, a UN force proclaimed by the Internationale and only consists of our men. We have other forces ready to dispatch to your lands to make a seperation between the protesters and you. To prevent active combat. 100 Marines and 50 SAS crewmen are the only members that make IFOR, but as I said, we have men and equipment, including armoured units, ready to be dispatched if needed. We need your approval to enter your territories. Following that, the connection points between the two parties and field HQ locations for your government and the opposing faction if possible. The connection points, as an example major roads, crossroads or bridges, were to be under UN control with IFOR troops there defending against both sides, and defences from HQs of both your and the protesters will follow the same procedure. All genetics labs will stop working and again, will follow the same procedure. As before, this message was made by Premier Corbyn."

A broadcast is sent to all nations of the world bringing awareness to the affairs in Scandinavia and the peace force to which they can contribute if Scandinavia accepts. Supplies would go through ports and airfields from Scotland to Scandinavia.

We thank you for your kind offer, but for now, we must decline. We aren't in danger of revolution yet; our government's approval rating remains high. Hatred and ignorance aren't winning, but sometimes they are noisy. It is not in our culture to be violent, unless you look a thousand years back.

It is the goal of terrorists to make us afraid. If we overreact, it shows they have won. By using force, we play into their narrative of oppression, giving them strength and numbers. We are undertaking an effort to educate our citizens in scientific literacy, so that attacks like last week's bombing can never again occur.

We will not shut down our genetic research, for we will not be cowed by unscientific reactionaries. Our research will break the cruel chains of nature's oppression, so that all may live to their fullest potential. Think of all the lives affected by disability, by mental illness, by disease. Now imagine those lives, but freed. That is our goal, and we won't let radicals ruin things for the rest of our people.

Once again, we thank you for your gracious offer. Your consideration of us in this time of mourning is much appreciated.

The language, especially that of the third paragraph, was intended to mimic the language of Soviet propaganda, in order to appeal to Britain's communists.

After the bombing, protests took on a softer and less militant tone. Everyone, even the protestors, felt that the bombing had crossed a line.

The Kingdom of Scotland currently can not take an official position on the choice of genetic modification, nor which side to support. Not because of their alliance with the USNE, and not so much because of their inadequate military force. The Queen had made a statement to those concerned as we are friends with the USNE and any incident that occurred would literally be a pond skip away. The Queen stated that, formally, genetic modification is not in her nor the rest of the governments goals, at any point. However, the rule of choice stays forever. While they are a religious country, they may ban genetic modification on those who can not appropriately choose. But just the same, the USNE is not the Kingdom of Scotland, and they have no right to force another nation to make any decision, as long as it doesn't harm the lives of their people. But even then, at current, the Kingdom of Scotland would not force their hand, nor choose a side. Concerning the conflict in USNE, the Kingdom of Scotland stays silent.

  • 1 month later...

After an exhaustive year-long investigation, in which hundreds of people were interviewed, the party responsible for supplying weapons to protestors was determined. It had taken nine months to determine that Russian nationalists were not responsible, and the final few months of the investigation had seen the employment of AI to assist in combing the vast quantity of data involved. Few other nations would have been able to solve the case, but the USNE was nothing if not methodical. Over a year after the tragedy in Parliament, the culprit had been found: the British Internationale. A motive couldn't be proven, but the obvious one, with historical precedent, was the fomentation of chaos to provide fertile ground for the expansion of International Socialism.

The USNE had begun the investigation with the intention of finding, combating, and destroying the groups responsible. However, the British Internationale was more powerful than the USNE, and war would be undesirable even if they were not. In accordance with its own recommendation, the report was put away, until a course of action was decided upon.

The plan eventually agreed upon, in a secret meeting between intelligence chiefs, was for the report to be 'accidentally' leaked. A post, containing the report, as well as non-sensitive USNE documents, was leaked from a computer in Rio de Janeiro. The piece of rolling paper which the order was written on was then filled with tobacco and smoked. The agent, who lived under an assumed name, had had no contact with USNE intelligence agencies beforehand, except for their joining a decade prior, at which point they looked significantly different, due to having not yet come out as transgender and undergone hormone replacement therapy.

The report would go viral.

In the face of media scrutiny, the government yesterday revealed that a leak had occurred, and assured the nation that it will improve cybersecurity so such a leak is not repeated. Opposition leaders, as well as members of government, have criticised what they describe as the government's 'weak position on the British Internationale', for temporarily shelving documents on their involvement in the smuggling of weapons into the USNE. One MP even described the government as 'a house of Chamberlains'. The government's approval rating has dropped to an all-time low 58%. But if one thought all the parliamentary vitriol was directed at the government, they'd be sorely mistaken. Britain has been harangued by both MPs and the press. 86% of USNE citizens now hold unfavourable views towards the Internationale, while only 2% hold favourable views.

"We are not aware of your internal affairs and how you run things, but this supposed leak has come to my attention. We deny of doing such action with there being no reason to provoke our Northern neighbour, this could be a plot by any nation and by the USNE itself. We will just say that we wanted to stabilize the situation in Scandinavia by forming a UN force, which was dismissed by that state. As I said, not everything seems as it is from the first look of it, there are many nations and organizations against us and our ideals and that could be their plan to promote hate-speech. You continue to do what you do, but stay within your borders, bud and don't try to mess with the revolutionaries" - Premier Corbyn's speech aimed to Scandinavian officials

You are, perhaps deliberately, avoiding the crux of the issue. The investigation covered the terrorist attack in Parliament House and the supplying of weapons to militants within our own borders. This has nothing to do with your peacekeeping offer, which we are now viewing in a new light after these recent revelations. Furthermore, your 'UN force' was no such thing. You yourself said that it "only consists of our men". How can a force composed of only one nation be a 'United Nations force'?

Yes, there are many nations against you. We do not deny that. But let us note that your response was to arm militants to destabilise us. Hate speech against ideologies is also not a crime in the USNE, so your attempt to prosecute it by destabilising us is an attempt to undermine our legal system.

The problem is that you made a mountain out of a molehill. The offer you suggested is the type one offers when a nation is facing civil war, not when a democracy is experiencing protests. Perhaps you, as a authoritarian dictator with gulags in Scotland, cannot tell the difference. By deliberately funding terrorism in the USNE, you have only confirmed the views of 'frauds and fakers'.
