A New Parliament

The results from the elections yesterday are final, the Thai National Liberal Party has won a majority in the House of Representatives with 278 of the 500 seats. They thus beat the Thai People's Party, which only reached 143 seats and the minor parties of the Green Thai Party (63 seats), the Thai Social Democrats (14 seats), the United for Thailand Party (2 seats). It can be assumed that the next government will be headed by National Liberal leader Pacharapun Mahawan, who already thanked the Thai voters for their trust bestowed upon the TNLP.

This is a harsh day for the TSD, which has lost an unbelievable number of support and likely will have to work for the next four years to restore faith into the party, lest they might end up being completely voted out of parliament. The UTP also has had far less success than initially thought, barely making it into the House. His Majesty, King Rama XI has expressed his approval of the free and fair elections and hopes for the next government to govern the realm well, fair and just.

The newly elected National Assembly will also be the first to be seated in the new Parliament building in the centre of Bangkok, at the banks of the Chao Phraya. The new building, the Sappaya-Sapasathan blends modern architecture with traditional styles and was constructed over the last 6 years to address the increasing lack of space in the old building. The new parliament building will also house a museum, a convention centre, offices of the representatives and more.

Future Prime Minister Mahawan has stated that the TNLP is now looking to increase investments within Thailand and the region, to build a nation fit for the challenges of the times ahead.

4 hours ago, Ivan Salazar said:

The Pacifican states of Salazarstan would like to reach out to Thailand in the name of friendship.

Aswell mybe establish peaceful realtions

While the Thai government appreciates the offer of friendship and welcomes any Salazarstani diplomat to visit Bangkok, we'd like to point out that this is the National Broadcasting Service, responsible to bring news to the people, not the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, responsible for dealing with foreign actors. We thank you for your consideration.

New government journeys around, seeking good neighbourly relations

Proclaiming that "Thailand shall seek peaceful and friendly ties with its neighbours", Prime Minister Pacharapun Mahawan has started a new era of foreign policy. It has been reported that just a short while ago, Thailand has held a meeting with the Ottoman state, agreeing on the exchange of embassies, discussion of trade ties and a potential exchange of students, though such still is being worked out. An ambassador to the new embassy still has to be appointed, but it is expected to happen soon.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Charupong Thammasan has travelled to Rokkenjima, meeting with his Rokkenjima counterpart Crestia Bel in their capital of Evatrice, to discuss a variety of matters for a better understanding between Thailand and this important regional neighbour. As both sides seem dedicated to a peaceful coexistence, it is hoped, that there will be a strengthening of trade ties in the future. Minister Thammasan has stated that he hopes regional dialogue can also be established with the Chinese soon, given they, just like Rokkenjima are an important regional power with a considerable border with Thailand.

Government pledges increased funding for investments in Laos

The Thai government today has proclaimed that they plan to increase the amount the state is going to spend into developing Laos. The rather poor region, which has been absorbed into Thailand and has quite a high degree of cultural autonomy, is still lagging behind the Thai average in many areas, as the region is considerably poorer, less accessible and not attracting much investment yet. The increased funding is supposed to go into upgrading infrastructure, to allow easier transport between mountainous Laos and the Thai interior and capital, as well as industrialising the area and improving education and healthcare.

This increased education budget also will hopefully help in bringing the education up to the national standard, as it is seen by many as quite a problem how there still are after-effects of the long-time communist rule in the area. Prime Minister Mahawan has expressed their wish to see this addressed, by not only teaching young Laotians the Thai and Lao languages, Maths, English and other such scientific content, but also valuable lessons on democracy and liberty. As local Laotian politicians have protested these attempts by the state to restructure education, the central government has made clear, it will not tolerate toxic holdover influences and that this democracy would ensure that threats to the constitutional order would be taken care off appropriately.

Military to be modernised as Thailand hopes to stay out of trouble

"The first line of defence is our diplomacy. But not always a single line will suffice to keep those out, who are determined to bring harm to our country.", Prime Minister Mahawan has stated, while inspecting troops near Bangkok. For quite some time now, it seems the Thai forces have been lagging further and further behind other countries in the world, which the new government has found intolerable. "While peace is a noble goal and the way of our people, this cannot mean we must be ignorant towards the world and its tendencies. Not everyone respects diplomacy and freedom and just like we must be willing to talk to people, we must be ready to defend ourselves, lest we become a mere plaything of others.", Minister of Foreign Affairs Thammasan is quoted.

Over the coming years, the military is expected to see a marked increase in its budget, to bring it up to par and allow it to defend the country' borders against any invaders. Especially, this will mean improving the air force and the navy, to allow Thailand to secure its airspace and sealanes. One major concern these days is not just potential attempts to subjugate Thailand, but that Thailand might not be able to ensure its neutrality and counter violations of its sovereignity, should the other major powers along its borders start fighting each other.

As the Thai armaments industry is in a rather underwhelming shape, options are being considered, to procure weapon systems from abroad, as such might be a more affordable approach, allowing the country to keep military spending from exploding and draining the budget for economic development.

Cambodia to be managed as separate governate

According to newest reports the House of Representatives has passed a bill creating the so-called Cambodia governate as sub-national administrative entity of Thailand. The new structure will see Cambodia governed by a devolved Cambodian parliament in Phnom Penh, under the nominal rule of a governor-general appointed by the King of Thailand. Except for the governor-general's office and the joined armed forces, official institutions of Cambodia will continue to fly the Cambodian flag, use the Khmer language and have wide-ranging autonomy on internal matters of Cambodia.

Still, there are critical voices, which call into question whether Thailand will not attempt to economically take over Cambodian enterprises and exploit the country for its own benefits, as well as Thai critics, who voice discontent over the need to finance Cambodian development. As it stands, the Prime Minister commented that Cambodia will have its own budget and its own tax revenue to work with and that finances will be made available, but only as loans, to finance Cambodian development. This plan too, however is not without controversy and it is expected that there will be more sophisticated policies that are still in the making.

Although they will be named the First to Fourth Cambodian Brigade, Cambodians will contribute to the national defense as part of the Thai military. The Ministry of Defense has stated that while at parades, Cambodian parades will fly their own flags and that they will fly their flags in addition to the Thai flag aside from that, it is simply not efficient to create a parallel military structure and the use of common insignia is there to avoid confusion in a possible conflict. There is however some displeasure about the introduction of Thai conscription law within Cambodia.

Thai embassy in Turkey closes, after Ottomans colonise Sri Lanka

After repeated talks with the Ottoman government, the Thai government has today announced that the Thai embassy to the Ottoman Empire will be closed, out of protest over the recent establishment of an Ottoman colony in South Asia. Additionally, Premier Mahawan has expressed great disappointment with the Ottomans, who seemed to think that due to past dealings, the Thai nation should have overlooked their questionable activities. "We welcome cooperation with friends, but we are not some whore, which can be bought for services. The Ottoman attitude towards our country and the free peoples of Asia is deplorable and until they improve their attitude, there will be no further exchange of representatives."

On the question whether this would potentially mean greater tensions in the region, Mahawan has responded with "Very likely." Asked on whether the Thai people had to fear conflict, the Premier responded with a "I do hope that there will be no further escalation, but Thailand will have to be ready to protect itself and the values it believes in. We are a people of peace, but that does not mean we can just show weakness when it becomes clear that oppression and imperialism become en vogue again."
