Orbis Prime, Orbis System, PW-1

The star of the Orbis system shone brightly as another standard day arrived aboard the station which sat above magnetic north pole. The fleets of the Imperial Kesrithi Navy floated around Orbis I and Orbis II. They were today however, patrolling more intensely as the station's DSD fields were reduced to permit entrance for a grand sight. For today, was the day that Queen Phage would arrive to tour the PW-1 Universe starting with the Orbis system and then proceeding to the Dark Nebula. The Pan'ai-khan was expected to be escorted by the 10th Imperial Fleet, 2nd Expeditionary Fleet, and 3 additional World Ships to make an impression on all those who would witness the Queen's arrival.

It was finally that day, the day she would emerge into this 'verse for her long awaited tour. Preparations had been made, delegates from various UMS nations had been notified and the Natives would have no idea of her coming. An enormous silvery-blue orb appears to block out the sun as the first of the ships push through. The 2nd Expeditionary fleet, and three Ifrit Class World Ships. Each of the world ships was as long as the planet Neptune with thousands of other smaller ships, some of which were hundreds of km in length. Following this was an enormous ship, which dwarfed even the World Ships in overall scale. Just a couple thousand km longer, but significantly wider and taller, the Pan'ai-khan was built as the warship of the D'ath monarchs and formerly served as the flagship for the Crown Princess before the reign of Phage I. Now it served as the Queen's flagship and dominated the field of any system they occurred in.

Finally, the third component of the Royal Escort arrived, the Tenth Imperial Fleet, a fleet which was put together to be one of three strong armed fleets. Over one million ships, most of which were cruisers or destroyers, supported by a Worldship and over two hundred of the dreaded Mri'jir class ships. Thousands of battleships and hundreds of carriers and dreadnoughts. The fleet would be more than capable of clearing any system of all life should that be their mission. In system, the 6th Defense Fleet remained at their posts, patrolling the inner .8 AU of the Orbis system while the Royal Fleet moved slowly out towards the orbit of Orbis II where they would officially begin their route. A transmission was sent out at that time to the entirety of the system in the various languages of the system's inhabitants.

"All Hail Phage D'ath, Queen of the Mri, Defender of NIka, Savior of the People and Protector of the Multiverse.

The Queen has arrived in the PW-1 Universe to tour our facilities and give direction to the various nations which make up this colonial 'verse. Delegations wishing for an audience with the Queen are directed to send a message to Governess Ariel, whom is a cousin to the Queen. May all who see her vessel know of her strength, and may all who face her blade know her fury. Nika Guide you all."

The transmission ends as the ships begin moving through the Orbis System with the tour planning to stop above Orbis III to inspect the Eire colony then over Orbis IV to inspect the Cyhelene colony in the northern ocean. Following this she wished to observe the efforts of her UMS allies in the system before leaving the system to inspect the KOF facilities. However, it is not before she reaches Orbis III that familiar pings start up.

Queen Phage I

Bridge of the Pan'ai-khan

"My Queen! Several large scale VOID signatures imbound, I doubt its FAR."

Queen Phage assumed her chair on the twelve kilometer long bridge which sat at the heart of the Pan'ai-khan. She looked at her own sensor readings, "Bring me their locations Kel'anth." Phage waited only a moment before several indicators appeared on her own displays. Her implants quickly fed information to her about the ship's activities she sent orders through it to prepare to repel an attack.

"Give me a direct link to the UMS emergency broadcast system of this universe. I know exactly what that signature is, and so does this ship."

It didn't take long for her to get the line up.

"This is Queen Phage I of the Mri Empire. My ship's sensors have detected VOID signatures inbound on the Orbis System they will arrive within five minutes, have your defenses prepared and your ships in fighting condition. The Naxids were not content to wait on us to make the first move in this 'verse. Perhaps they have learned from their ancestral mistakes."

Ships arrayed themselves as she sent the coordinates. Two signatures indicated Orbis I and Orbis II were targets. Another signature indicated Orbis IV was being targeted and another three indicated that Orbis V, Orbis VII, and Orbis VIII were also being targeted. A pair of smaller, signatures showed what appeared to be scout ships, or skirmish fleets also emerging in the Kuiper Belt and in the Asteroid Belt of the system. It was a full scale invasion of the UMS landing point of this Universe and the Naxids planned to wipe them out quickly.

Messages came in from the various KOF facilities in the SMC and other Milky Way systems claiming similar situations there. Triskeli warships, not yet delivered, were being put into action against Naxid fleets attacking various fabrication centers.

The Divine Tumult

VRZ Azure Midwinter's Sunset

Nalydian 6th Fleet "Fury Chlümüchgrazhni'an"

Admiral! We are receiving an emergency transmission! It appears to -

Admiral Heinz! Massive signatures on Natyl & Mylchar Arrays! It appears to -

Admiral! We -

Quiet! Heinz barks. We already know what's coming. Sensors - give me an estimate on the size of the incoming force.

There is silence for a brief moment. Then, the displays are brought up. A massive force takes shape on them. VOID signatures, the sensors operator states. Billions of them.

Heinz nods slowly. Take the rest of the fleet out of rift.

The communications officer nods. She relays the information to the rest of the Pordish armada. Near Uranus, a massive rend in space-time erupts. The planet-sized bulk of the mobile shipyard-fortress "Voznayali" slides into the system. Sailing in concert with it are thousands of smaller contacts - capital ships - all in excess of one hundred kilometers from bow to stern. These Assault Fleets are two in number and contain within their ranks four thousand capital ships, their escorts, and five moon-sized flagship type Jlokhemit Natynozhskaya dreadnoughts. They begin taking a defensive posture as their funnels belch vast quantities of pure, unrefined rift energies into the void;  their captains are eager to store as much of it as possible before the start of the engagement. Time is not on their side. Trailing in behind the main contingent are rift cruisers of the 36th, 14th, and 45th Patrol Fleets. These smaller ships form up with legions of Tylaq Balnook type runners and begin to patrol away from the main force.

Almost eleven AU away, practically an hour and a half's time away via sublights - at Neptune - more rift signatures betray the emergence of three Assault Fleets of the High Hunter's Navy: some six thousand capital ships and their escorts. This force also has rift cruisers with it; 16th, 22nd, and 32nd Patrol Fleets are all present and like with at Uranus, they form up with the runners of the fleet and go to work extending the Pordish battle formation.

We are stable in the Uranian System, Admiral, the helmsman states. Heinz nods.

Comms, patch through the Mri communique again.

Tasi, the communications officer says.

Heinz replies: Tell them... The VRZ is ready. May Jlokhemit watch over us and Rekazhnar guide our bows.

Operations room

The room was cast in a dark red hue, in the shadows figures moved with a swift pace and a sense of urgency. It had been several minutes since a general alarm had been sounded and orders were being snapped from ship to ship as contingency plans were being uttered in the ears of officers. Ensign Smith had been at his station since the alarm bells had started ringing, his heart raced, a deep thudding in the back of his head echoed through his mind. This was the first time on deployment he had heard the general call for a serious combat situation. He could feel the ship as the engines moved the into its new defensive position. Focusing on the weapons systems he controlled he almost didn’t notice the moment the Grand Admiral entered the room.

Ladies and gentlemen, the rumours that you have heard in the past few minutes are true. I will not lie to you that the situation at hand is tough one†the Admiral spoke with a soft tone as he stood in front of the holotable located in the center of the room. “However, I ask that you, like your forbearers, who forged this mighty Empire, reach for the fiery blade at your side and strike down this foe. Like a knight in the battlefield we will stand our ground and slaughter those who threaten us and force them to kneel†there was a sense of power growing in his voice as he walked around the table, often looking at ensigns as he walked. “Today, we stand our ground and ignite the blade that shines bright enough to blind our enemies. You will do your duty and so will I. If we fail on this day, let our enemies know that the Empire doesn’t forget and will return in greater numbers. We will burn their home worlds to the ground and erase their society from existence. Triskel will emerge victorious, soaked in the blood of our enemiesâ€.

Smith found himself repeating the Imperial Mantra that had been repeated a million times since his enlistment “Every traitorous soul shall kneel†and he could hear the other deck crew repeating the same phrase.

Fleet movements

The bulk of the fleet had formed a defensive sphere slightly beyond Orbis IV, in the center of the sphere were the three newly built defence platforms which hosted an array of weapons systems that would be used to deter any incoming threats.  Surrounding the platforms were layers of the remaining Super Star Destroyers facing away from the station in complete field of fire which would allow all ships and the station to coordinate their attacks.

Headquarters of Feldmarschall Keegan Russell

Oberon, Uranian System

We've received word from Admiral Heinz that Naxid forces are inbound, Feldmarschall.

Keegan is silent. He reviews a holomap of the Pordish colonies on the five major moons of Uranus. They are small moons but still have similar surface area to that of a more primitive terrestrial nation. Not many men will be needed to defend them; he expects the combat to resemble battling on Earth from FB-1. The Feldmarschall moves the displays. What was that Earther nation that survived into the modern era of space travel? The United States? He brings up the holomap of Triton (a Neptunian moon). The US was too successful back home. Fractal existences made diplomacy a nightmare. Peace with one America, war with another, terrible tensions with yet a third. Virginia was once invaded because... Of something rather. Denmen then crashed a garbage carrying transport into it. Disastrous

Feldmarschall, we have about five minutes before they arrive in-systen. Heinz is already moving to engage.

Keegan looks up from his displays. The capital - Oberon - currently is defended by an entire Korps of Paramarines: the Divisions "Tamers of the Swarm," "Fall of Sphenis," "Spear of Arctodonia," and "Kohn's Raiders." They have fought Naxid before and many within their ranks are eager to fight them again. They are good, experienced men, but Keegan would prefer if the hostile host isn't given the opportunity to fight his men here, in this system. Fate, however, never lowers herself to the desires of man. He shuts the displays off. None of the other moons have formations of note save for the Nävsh'an Paramarines of VII Korps on Titania and the Krazhhelm division of Chünezhnar on Triton. The Feldmarschall speaks:

Get the men ready, he says.

Jawohl, Herr Feldmarschall, the aid says. He salutes and hurries out of the room.

Keegan follows him out into the cold. Paramarine forces begin preparing for combat - one Pord flips the safety off of a large 65mm rotary battle rifle while another finishes polishing her sword. Large artillery pieces, already trained skyward, are loaded with anti-ship ordnance; anti-personnel and anti-hoard payloads are on standby, but before the Naxid close they will not be used. Above them all, the dark charcoal tint of the moon's Projector Array systems come online; Oberon, like the other Nalydian holdings now in Orbis, becomes sheathed in a nanite-particle shield that flows with all the putrid and semi-living energies of the rift. No-one can see in; none can see out.

Will the Feldmarschall seek cover? Keegan's adjutant inquires. You do have a bad habit of moving too far forward, the adjutant says.

Keegan shakes his head. Not right now, he says. We aren't under attack just yet and I'd like to review these troops once more before we are.

His adjutant frowns. Do be careful, he says. I'd hate to have to explain your death to Peterson.

Keegan can only chuckle. I'm sure he's expecting it, he says. His adjutant gives no reply.

Orbis III

Deployed near Orbis III are rift cruisers of the 12th and 37th Patrol Fleets, slated to defend the few holdings of note on the planet. With the planetary defenses already mostly alert from the Martian conflict, not much more occurs here other than the engaging of shields on the cruisers and the linking of the various Array systems planetside; massive streaks of energy begin to crisscross the globe as systems based in the various oceans (the numerous Jewels) go about linking with one another. In orbit, the rift cruisers of the small detachment shine brilliantly courtesy their rift-infused polyhedral plating. The armour is new and untested, but Alterran and Pordish scientists are confident that it will prove itself when combat finally is joined.

Orbis System

The Naxid fleets emerged in the system. It was a nightmare come true. Enormous swirling masses of biological ships created one of the most intimidating fleets that anyone in the system would have ever seen. Eight total fleets, each had its own hive ship, a large spherical vessel at the center measuring nearly 1500km in diameter. Other ships ranged from 3m interceptors to 150km dreadnoughts. The Naxids had come prepared and total numbers on their fleet were difficult to grasp. However, Mri sensors indicated ~1.76 Billion individual craft, not counting for strike craft. The number of craft were staggering and they arrived much closer than anticipated, coming as close as 1 AU from the sources of FTLi and DSD.

The largest concentration of forces were at Orbis V, where they anticipated little resistance and had landing craft preparing to set up bases of operation on the four largest moons there. To protect this fleet, 700 million ships and two of the Hive ships were there. A small expeditionary force was in the Asteroid Belt looking for enemies there.

In the inner system, the Naxids numbered 350 million between two fleets assaulting Orbis I and Orbis II. They however, learned that a threat from Orbis Prime would prove difficult as they had not anticipated a Tlaloc station being positioned away from the planets, this was atypical for the Mri to do.

Orbis IV had the smallest fleet, only 60 million ships and one hive ship.

Orbis VI saw a similarly sized fleet of about 65 million with a singular hive ship.

Orbis VII and VIII saw a significantly inflated number of ships. Between the two, 550 Million ships and single hive ship. Clearly the largest singular fleet brought to the system

The outer regions of the system saw roughly 35 million ships and a hive ship, making it the smallest fleet. They were planning on establishing outpost on the dwarf planets in the oort cloud starting with the Plutonian System.

While each fleet was independent they seemed to work in unison when they are near each other. As a means of softening their targets, long barbed torpedoes launch from the entire Naxid fleet, easily putting the number of torpedoes well above 20 billion torpedoes. They were targeting both planetary and orbital facilities and ignoring fleets positioned to defend those locations first. They meant to wipe out ground resistance before securing orbital control.

Bridge of the AIN Piercing The Darkness

The Alterrans had been in the PW-1 Verse for less than two hours when they had picked up high levels of incoming Rift and VOID activity on the interior of the system that they had emerged next to. The Empress made the call to disengage from their own mission and divert attention toward the inner system, noting that the signatures found on the other side of the asteroid cluster belt were those of allies and enemies of many centuries past.

Commander Duvaine had issued the order to make a Rift jump to a set of coordinates.

Lt. Commander Murcia stated, "Sir, I am detecting FTLi fields ahead."

Duvaine nodded, "Good thing AEON was already active, otherwise this trip would be a long one."

He chuckled to himself.  "Make the Rift Jump, pulse AEON with our temporal frequency."

The Lt Commander nodded and made the necessary command inputs.  "Ready, Commander."

"Engage." Empress Romana said firmly.

The ship's shields began to swirly with intense energies, forming a cloudy mist of the putrid Rift energy that allowed the ship to vanish from sensors, almost appearing to cloak itself, the ship vanished into the Rift, slipping in with elegance and grace.  As the ship entered the Rift, a pulse of energy resonated throughout the AEON system, previously deployed (see other thread [Temple of the Dark King] for deployment).

All throughout the Orbis System, septillions of pinpricks of light illuminate for exactly .00000912 nanoseconds, a second, shorter illumination would occur exactly 2 seconds later. At the time of this second pulse, a ribbon of light drew itself across the darkness of space at a location precisely equidistant between Orbis IV and Orbis V. As the ribbon drew itself, a fog of Rift energy began to emerge - as if were attempt to escape into the nothingness of the space around them. The bow of a vessel appeared to emerge from what would appear to be a cloaking barrier. As the ship entered normal space, the ribbon of light drew itself closed as the Alterran Research vessel began to stabilize and absorb the residual Rift energies that had deposited the vessel here.

An encrypted message was sent on a secure UMS channel, identifying the Alterrans to all allies in the system.  AURORA, the Alterran AI began to assess the situation that they had emerged into.  "Commander, I would suggest moving all non-essential systems power to the defensive systems.  Our signature is about to be targeted."

AURORA did not wait for the command, she began isolating systems and transferring power to the Hadronite Shields as well as preparing the Ablative Armour systems - while they were not meant for combat, specifically, they were meant to withstand the immense pressures of the interiors of massive stars and even blackholes - thus giving the ship a decent survival quotient.  The vessel's AVI began calculating firing solutions of Naxid forces and did not wait to be invited to the fray - but powered all weapons systems and obtained locks.

Commander Duvaine ordered all crew - "Red Alert. All hands to battle stations."

The Empress sat in the Command Chair and linked with AURORA to decipher the threats presented.  "AURORA, how long can we hold out in a fight here?"

"If the Naxids have not had significant alterations to their technology since our last encounter - which based on a low level sweep, they have not - then I calculate that we can hold our own until the Spirit of Alterra and her fleet arrive." AURORA replied.

The Empress nodded. "Prepare the drones and Rift Fighters."

AURORA instantly reported back, "I anticipated your needs.  They are both ready for launch."

Romana nodded.  "Launch."

Four shielded ports opened and nearly 400 small fighter-like vessels flew out of the ship, surrounding the vessel in equidistant patterns, flying around the vessel in an almost swarm-like fashion.

"Tactical thrusters are engaged." Duvaine called out.

"Give me military thrust - let's head for that mess directly in front of us." Romana stated as the vessel began it's movement at sublight toward the Jovian moons.

En route, incoming missiles were detected.  In addition to the Rift Fighter swarm, the AIN Piercing The Darkness activated it's point defense systems and prepared to fire at any incoming missiles.

OOC:  You asked for it.  Space Thermopylae in another post, but...

IC;

Vex's Fuels and Formulas

The two cutters broke off from the station, hurling towards the gate at full speed.

They couldn't load that many civilians on a pair of ships that were already fully crewed, but they tried.

The following played on the intercom:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OD3F7J2PeYU

Staffers huddled together, tentacles and arms and various appendages bound together in peace and harmony.

"Men."  Vex himself spoke.  "It was an honor.  Feel free to snack on whatever stock we have.  I've shut off the neon lights and the broadcasts.  Hopefully they won't try to kill us."

"What did we do?!"  Jim grasped his human skull tightly with both hands.  "What Did We Do?!"

"Shit happens."  Another staffer muttered.  "Then you die."

"Anybody going to finish the Slurm?!"  Another somewhat more corpulent employee shouted.

"Be my guest, kid."  Vex sighed.  He placed a tendril on the shoulder-equivalent of one of his remaining female employees.  "Hey, I'm sorry about your fiancee."

She burst into tears.

Jim's voice howled across the station.

"WHAT DID WE DO WRONG?!"

In the void, the fuel station hurled slowly.

Would it continue to hurl along?  Or would the inevitable take its staff to paradise?

By the Eternal Grace of the Winter-Bringer...

VRZ Azure Midwinter's Sunset
Nalydian 6th Fleet "Fury Chlümüchgrazhni'an"

Five minutes.

The Mri gave five minutes until the Naxid arrival. And it seems their predictions are as accurate as the Pords' own. After almost five minutes on the dot, the Pords detect them.

Admiral! We are detecting realm breaches! The Naxid are attempting to force their way though the Natyl & Mylchar Arrays!

Heinz nods. Let the interdiction do its job, he replies.

Tasinehdaos! echo and it soon becomes evident Heinz' confidence is not misplaced.

Multiple detonations detected! Naxid ships are being destroyed!

Maintain power to the Natyl & Mylchar Arrays, Heinz orders.

Tasi, an affirmation is voiced.

They've... Stopped. We count 704,000,000 subfabric detonations of varying grade. I'm getting larger readings of 176,000,000 detonations in the "very large" category. I think it is safe to assume those to be confirmed vessel kills.

Thank you, sensors. They are no longer pushing through the Natyl & Mylchar Arrays?

No, Admiral, it appears that - the sensors operator stops. Suddenly the displays light up. At first hundreds, and then thousands, then tens of thousands of contacts. The numbers grow and balloon and soon they pass hundreds of thousands and into the millions range. At varying distances from the Pordish fleet, Naxid ships arrive in force. What the hell?!

Heinz looks at the displays himself. At distances as close as an AU, Naxid forces have made their way through the FTLi fields. He shakes his head. This shit again. Throughout the system, Naxid forces pour in through the DSD and Pordish Natyl & Mylchar interdiction layers. The fight is on.

Naxid forces have made it through our interdiction layers, Admiral.

I can see that, Heinz states. Can never trust R&D to deliver. So much for nothing will get through the new interdiction. Signal the fleet to prepare for ship to ship combat, he says.

Tasi, the communications officer says, Tasinehdao!

Almost as soon as they arrive, the Naxids go on the offensive. Once more Heinz' displays alight - this time with the signatures of billions of missiles. It is apparent they are not targeting Heinz' warships, but the moons and colonies themselves in addition to orbital works. He notes a considerable amount also heading towards the gate between Orbis VII and Orbis VIII, but defending that is not his primary concern.

Push PA interdiction out to .5 AU from all vessels. I want no energy weapon usage in this battlespace, Heinz barks. Runners and rift cruisers withdraw to the main fleet; seed the area with PBA Probes as you fall back, he orders. His hand is busy on the console relaying the movements. He zooms out. There are still a few minutes before the Naxid missile swarms are in range enough to deal with directly. Tell Keegan to hunker down. He'll have to hope his shields hold. He should be able to handle some missiles, the Admirals says. For now, pulse the swarms twice with bursts, then redirect power into defensive Array linking.

Heinz' orders are carried out. The first Nalydian counter consists of two large, concentric shells that emerge from their fleets. These are directed gamma ray bursts, and Heinz hopes to fry vast quantities of the incoming missiles with them. Should an unacceptable quantity survive, he is prepared to bring out his other weapon systems. For the time being though, he has not lost confidence in the situation.

He opens a communications line: Admiral Zhüln, he says directly to his subordinate, advance your divisions.

In the void the ships begin to move - five of the divisions deployed in defense near the Uranian System. Their Arrays are linked and their formations seem to resemble dark spheres more than actual starship conglomerations. They will be the first to make contact with the incoming Naxid warships...

Isis' Lovely Smile, Command Deck

It was good that Melvin's Maw had been evacuated beforehand.

There were only a handful of stubborn colonists left.  They did not survive when billions of torpedoes slammed into the surface of Mars.

The crews watched, horrified, as life was rapidly purged from the terraformed planet.

And yet, the fleet was still there!

"All ships, this is Admiral Delacroix.  Launch all fighters, and maintain formation around our starbase.  Our fighters will whittle them as they begin to approach us.  Interceptor Wings, do what you can to shoot down nearby torpedoes, but we understand if there are too many.  Bomber Wings, your mission is to engage the largest of the enemy ships.  Take out their propulsion or any subsystems you can discern.  All other fighter groups must defend the Bombers and counteract enemy snub ships.  Go!  Make your nation proud!"

And so, thousands of fighters hurled out of various hangars.   The Four Battleships alone spat out over two thousand fighters, BPS Hood, a Combat Carrier herself contributed another 1500 fighters to the swarm.  and the rest of the Battle Group launched fighters of their own.  As such, just over 5,000 fighters, or almost two entire Brigades hurled themselves at the Naxids.  Each type of Fighter clustered together into specific divisions.  Bombers slammed the nearest Naxid behemoths they could reach with Ion, Plasma, and Antimatter Torpedoes, while their escorting Heavy Fighters, Escort Fighters (Apollos), and entire Fighter Groups of Athena Fighter-Bombers lashed out at Naxid counterparts; the Athenas providing additional fire support with albeit less potent ordinance.  Not a few Apollos were already shot down by Naxid reprisals, and several Interceptors weren't quite swift enough to avoid meeting their end, but the Cloud had not thinned so quickly.

The cloud of fighters clashed with the Naxid horde.  Perhaps they could put a dent in their numbers!  One could only hope.

OOC:  Not sure if reinforcements coming through the gate NOW is OP or not, so won't risk it I suppose.  While the fleet has deployed all fighters, the Starbase has actually left its internal garrison as a reserve, though it's only two Wings for this smaller type of Starbase (540 fighters).  Ideally this reserve can handle additional Naxid fighters that try to flank.  Either way, I'll wait for a few more posts lol.

KDS Salvation of Benaton, above Orbis III

Five minutes.

That was all the time that Admiral Mihailovic had had to activate the AEON system of the Third Fleet and make sure that all ships were in position. By the time that was finished, Zorya, the Alterran-made Advanced Virtual Intelligence (AVI) that was responsible for coordinating the Third Fleet's systems while using their FTLi had calculated the innumerable signatures coming in from the Naxids. And Admiral Mihailovic, as steely as he was, had nearly shat himself. He was in the largest fleet engagement any human of BF-1 had ever, and likely would ever, been a part of.

And all he had was a measly two thousand ships.

"All ships hold position," he commanded, and a holographic image of a robed woman appeared on the bridge.

"To defend people, or gawk?" asked Zorya, possessing a dry wit that Mihailovic was not in the mood for right now.

"Stow that, Zorya. What are the trajectories of these ships?"

"It looks like the Naxids, in a clear defiance of any standard science-fiction 'alien invader' tropes, are not interested in Orbis III, at least not yet. Lucky break for us, considering the smallest fleet against the UMS is a paltry 60 million, heading for the Triskeli over Orbis IV. So the question is, what exactly do you plan to do, Admiral? Pray that HIGHCOM nuts up and sends reinforcements?"

"Yes, but besides that--"

"Sir!" called a comm officer. "Getting more signatures inbound, with an encrypted message! It's... it's the Alterrans, sir!"

"What?" Mihailovic demanded, and on the Benaton's main view screen, Zorya helpfully brought up a diagram of the Orbis system, showing the various fleets in place, the countless Naxid swarm, and an Alterran signature that had jumped to around Jupiter and moved to engage the bugs.

"Damn... Finally get to see the Alterrans work," Mihailovic muttered. "Is there anything else around?"

"Apart from engaging fleets and torpedoes which I'm fairly certain are going to obliterate all Martian colonies, just one thing I've picked up: The Bro fueling station around Saturn, Vex's? They're in trouble. They have no defenses and their last transmission was..." Zorya paused. "A 20th Century reggae song. Given the lyrics I'm sure that it was meant to be ironic."

Mihailovic paused, frowning a bit.

"Get me Commander Anja Milosevic."

A second later, the viewscreen image changed to show a woman in her thirties, standing aboard a smaller bridge: Commander Milosevic was in charge of the KDS Panther, a corvette meant for basic system patrol, in addition to utilizing stealth systems for ambush tactics.

"Commander, I've got a mission for you," Mihailovic said to Milosevic. "Our allies the Broes are in a bit of a jam, and their gas station around Saturn is in danger. We can't really engage these Naxids right away, and they don't seem to be interested in us. So to attempt to take advantage of this, I'm sending you to Vex's to evacuate those in it and bring them to Orbis III if at all possible. This is a mission you might not come back from. Do you accept?"

"Do I have a choice, sir?" Milosevic asked in reply, and Mihailovic smirked in spite of himself.

"No you don't, Commander. Godspeed."

Zorya cut the connection.

"Is this wise, sir? That's one less ship to defend us, and for what, a few dozen Broes?" Captain Dragan Orevsky, Mihailovic's XO, asked, and the Admiral looked to him.

"They're our allies, Captain. What sort of alliance is this if we don't try to help our allies who need it? We'll be seeing some fighting before too long, anyway."

KDS Panther

Commander Anja Milosevic reclined in her command chair as the Panther shot away from the far side of Orbis III, heading toward Saturn. Silent running was active, minimizing heat signatures as much as possible, and at .9c it was around an hour to Saturn, provided they or the station made it that long; to that end the Panther was staying as far away from combat as possible for this. But, orders were orders. The Panther was going to make it to Saturn and rescue the staff of this one station or die trying, because... what else were they supposed to do in the face of almost certain failure? Run away? The Kressnians were not as martially inclined as the other UMS nations, but they were not cowards, and one way or another that was going to be proven this day.

Bridge of the AIN Piercing The Darkness

Commander Duvaine looked toward the Empress and said with a small chuckle, "I was resistant, at first to holding all of these additional ordnance, given the nature of this ship's mission, however I agreed because you were due to be on board. Now - I can see why the High Guard was so insistent."

Romana smirked a little, "Death and I have danced this dance for all of Time's Cycles. It never hurts to be prepared for such encounters."

AURORA reported in, "This appears to be the bulk of the Naxid forces concentrations and based on the types of vessels here and the number of forces, there is a 99.97% probability that the Naxids intend to colonize the moons. A beachhead, so to speak."

Romana asked, "What forces can we engage with this ship's limited capacity?"

AURORA calculated, "We could not engage a Hive Ship - we would be taken out without support from either our own or allied forces. We could realistically engage the small expeditionary force in close proximity in the Asteroid Belt. I calculate the Spirit of Alterra Fleet will not arrive for another 5 minutes."

Romana thought for a moment. "Use the stealth systems to decrease our fabric profile - send the Rift Fighters in to engage the Naxids.  Let's test their strength before full engagement."

AURORA activated the Ablative Armour's stealth systems and the vessel seemed to blend into the background radiation on sensors - it's movement nearly impossible to track as the vessel's dispersal pattern was directed in multiple directions, designed to create false readings and blend into the background levels. The Rift Fighters broke away from the vessel as it continued to move. The fighters locked on to the expeditionary force and found the vessels that they could test for strength. Not quite the smallest and least armed, but also not quite the largest and most advanced ships to engage first.  200 of the craft zoomed through space at speeds between .25 and .99998c - depending on what maneuvers they needed to complete. The ships locked weapons on the target and opened fire with a barrage of ionic plasma and mid-yield antimatter torpedoes. After completing the first wave, the first 200 ships broke formation and fell back while the second wave prepared to engage.

In the meantime, Commander Duvaine sent out a message to the Pords - the message was sent on an encrypted UMS channel -
The message reads:  The Empress of Alterra wishes to express her salutations to our esteemed allies. This is Commander Na'tan Duvaine of the AIN Piercing The Darkness.  Only a single ship presently, however we have a Capital Fleet, set to arrive in five minutes. We request FTLi clearance for the fleet upon arrival - from the Star's Core directly to the moon known in MS-1 as Europa.  Please confirm.

Mri Fleet Actions

The Naxids were not joking about their offensive. Fortunately, the Mri had significant fleets in the region. Queen Phage looked at the sensors and made a determination. The inner system could be held, despite the size of the attacking force. However, Orbis IV and V needed assistance and she was more than willing to send it. "Tenth Fleet, you are to engage Naxid Forces at Orbis IV before moving on to Orbis V. The 2nd and 6th fleets will hold here with the Pan'ai-khan. I will notify our allies of our movements. You are to engage all hostile torpedoes as well. They are firing from 1 AU away and thus will take time as the Naxid weaponry is not up to par with our own. You should be able to intercept the missiles heading for Orbis IV."

Queen Phage sees a strange signal appear on the board. Alterran Vessels, they are naturally marked as hostile, but she changes the reading to neutrals. The Alterrans are the Old Enemy. A foe faced many times before and likely again someday in the future. However, here they were to be seen as allies. Sending a message to the Kressnian Admiral, Mihailovic. "Admiral Mihailovic, this is Queen Phage of the Mri Empire, I am rerouting the 10th Imperial Fleet through your sector. I request your forces join up with their own and abandon Orbis III's defenses for the time being. I plan on the 10th Fleet and our UMS allies rallying to push the Naxids from the inner system before moving on Orbis V."

As the Mri forces moved their static defenses went into action. Beams of light rippled across the dark sky. Torpedoes intended to strike the surface of Orbis II were destroyed first, and none made impact, however, this left Orbis I less defended and two of the three outposts on the planet were wiped out and the third suffered major damage. Orbis I also lacked orbital defenses, relying solely on Tlaloc 22 for its defense. Tlaloc 22 had taken action and it was a sight to see, the station's weapon systems were blasting through the flank of one of the Hive Fleets as the swirling mass of ships meant fresh shields were always facing the station, it also meant it could do damage over a larger area of the fleet over time. Billions of missiles flew out from the station between the 1.2 million bombardment lasers. The inner most Naxid fleet was not prepared for a Tlaloc station to be opening fire on it.

Over Orbis II, the defense stations took significant damage, and one of the Dark Stations had been utterly destroyed. However, the other 12 orbited the planet to form a defensive wall with their own outer defenses. Each of the 18 arms of the stations turned towards the Naxids and in unison, 216 Erra Projection Cannons lit up the sky. The beams tore through the front of the Naxid formations and were targeting the fleet's carriers, 37km long vessels which were in the process of deploying their own fighter craft. The fleets themselves waited until the enemy were closer, focusing on defensive tactics and preparing their fighter swarms to face the Naxid's own forces.

Naxid Forces Orbis VI

The Naxid force here was told of a fortress orbiting the planet, but their scans were unable to locate anything significant to fire upon. Instead, they began landing operations on several of Saturn's moons to mirror the Orbis V tactics. The Hive ship seemed to glow a bright yellow as if pleased that it's swarm would not be damaged significantly before making landfall. They were surprised when a force of fighters struck their landing craft. The Naxid queen grew enraged trying to find the source of the fighters, but unable to do so, she simply ordered her forces to eliminate the fighters that had already begun tearing through her forces with significant speed. To the Broes, it seemed as if every attack they made did more damage than they ever expected. Shields didn't hold up too well to energy strikes and the hulls beneath seemed to crumple from explosive weapon damage. Kinetic rounds seemed to completely bypass the shields and leave either craters or pass straight through the superstructure of the Naxid ships themselves. Perhaps these Fighters could hold off until significant reinforcements arrived, should they be sent soon.

Orbis VII and VIII Front

The Naxid swarm seemed confused as millions of their ships simply didn't appear with them. The loss of such a large portion of the fleet in a single instant seemed to paralyze one of the Hive Ships temporarily. The other hive ship, seemingly in control of more forces than the first, pushed forward against its targets. Having felt satisfied its Torpedoes would find their mark. The energy weapons failed to activate, so he turned to his plasma weaponry. Bolts of magnetically guided plasma burst forth towards the Nalydian Fleets. The burning hot energy crackled as it approached their frigid opponents.

KDS Salvation of Benaton

Admiral Mihailovic sat down in his command chair after the Panther broke from the rest of the fleet on its rescue operation. The rest of the fleet held position around Orbis III and Luna, with Zorya dutifully monitoring the rest of the battlefield, showing the closest engagements on various viewscreens; Mihailovic was particularly impressed by the output of Tlaloc 22. Supreme Leader Ambrozije had correctly predicted just how much danger the Republic would have been in if attacked by any of these powers instead of joining forces...

"The Mri are on the move, sir," the AVI announced. "Well, some of them, at least. Their Tenth Fleet is heading to Orbis IV. Incoming message from... Queen Phage of the Mri; she wants us to abandon Orbis III for the time being, as the Naxids don't seem to care about it in the slightest, and link up with the Tenth Fleet to provide relief for the Triskeli and the colonies on the planet. I second this motion; we'll actually get things done and at least keep forces from heading for the Panther if we engage this enemy."

Mihailovic weighed his options for about ten seconds, before nodding. "Understood. Send an affirmation and get me our fleet's channels."

"Aye, sir," Zorya replied, patching the Benaton in to the rest of the Third Fleet.

"All ships, this is Admiral Mihailovic. We've just received a request for assistance in saving this star system by the Mri, against an enemy we've never faced and which has hit this star system with numbers none of us have ever seen before. If we do this, it will be in direct violation of our orders. If we don't do this, the colonies of Orbis IV will be lost and the Triskeli will likely be overwhelmed. And so I've decided on our plan of action: We're all going to link up with the Mri Tenth Fleet, save the natives, and kill a lot of bugs. It's time for the Republic of Kressnia to start pulling its weight for the UMS; and by the end of this battle, we're all going to be heroes. All ships, with me!"

"You could have pulled that speech off better," Zorya snarked, but Mihailovic shook his head.

"I'm better at speeches when I have time to prepare. No time to prepare when we've got civilians to save and allies to help."

"Understood, Admiral. I'll make note of that the next time we get an early warning against insurmountable odds. All ships moving out," Zorya replied, and the Third Fleet dutifully followed its admiral in leaving Orbis III to link up with the Mri. Relief for Orbis IV was on its way.

Let Us Unleash the Jlokstazh!
VRZ Azure Midwinter's Sunset
Nalydian 6th Fleet "Fury Chlümüchgrazhni'an"

Admiral Heinz, we are receiving a heavily encrypted message. It appears to be from... Alterrans.

Heinz nods slowly. He hadn't expected Alterrans to show up here, in this verse, at this battle. But he can hardly blame them. The signatures of the fleets present easily give off massive signatures. No doubt they'd be noticed. He nods again.

Patch it through, he says.

The communications officer acquiesces:

"The Empress of Alterra wishes to express her salutations to our esteemed allies. We have a Capital Fleet, set to arrive in five minutes. We request FTLi clearance for the fleet upon arrival - from the Star's Core directly to the moon known in MS-1 as Europa.  Please confirm."

Thank you, communications, the Admiral says. Give them interdiction clearance, he orders.

Tasinehdao! come the replies.

Communications, message them back: "We read you, Commander Duvaine. Admiral Manster Heinz of the Nalydian 6th Fleet here. Good to see more allies on this battlefield. You will be given clearance through our interdiction layers from Orbis Prime to Orbis V Satellite VI as per your request. May Rekazhnar guide your bows."

The communications officer nods and sends the encrypted message back to the Alterran vessel.

Heinz directs his attention back to the displays. The first directed gamma ray burst makes contact with the missile wall; vast quantities of missiles survive the first shell only to make contact with the second. The Admiral looks up from the displays:

We've thinned them. Prep missile banks - chase down and destroy the remaining missiles. Target the fleet with the survivors.

Across the Nalydian warships, missile banks slam open. A sickening array of singularity missiles spew forth out into the void: tens of millions from the planet-sized "Voznayali" alone joined by egregious amounts from the other massive warships as well. The cloud is vast and easily outnumbers the host bearing down upon them. The gargantuan armada zooms through the black nothing towards the incoming Naxid missile swarm and within minutes the initial wave of hostile torpedoes has been dealt with. The Nalydian missile swarm, however, is unyielding, and continues past the hostile swarm and makes steam for the Naxid fleet.

Our picket ships are nearly back within our formations, Admiral, the sensors operator notes.

Are the PBA Redirection probes in position?

It appears so, Admiral. Naxids have taken no action against them, the sensors operator confirms.

Let's use them, then. Admiral Heinz orders. Begin primary firing patterns.

Tasinehdao!

Throughout the battlespace, even in areas where Naxid forces don't appear to quite be in range yet, massive energy signatures can be detected. Then suddenly - but not without warning - from what appear to be minute contacts, vast streams of weaponized LNS lash out in anger at the offending Naxid swarms. Their power appears to make no sense considering the signatures they are giving off, but upon closer inspection it is revealed that they are actually siphoning off of the main combined Array's of Heinz' fleet. This, though, is not the main show...

Heinz turns his attention to the actual fleet engagement; Admiral Zhüln is now in the firing line...

Zhüln's Divisions

Admiral Zhüln looks out across the bridge of his flagship, the 2,250 kilometer long dreadnought VRZ Effervescent Brilliance. The enemy has opted to close with him, and he will meet them. The displays alight with Naxid fire...

Admiral, the Naxids have opened fire! Shall we return fire? Zhüln's second in command. The man eyes the displays; he knows given the volume of fire the combined shielding of the fleet can hold for the time being, but offing Naxids also would help.

Admiral Zhüln smiles. Yes, he says with a wide grin cast towards his second in command. Return fire!

The orders sink through Zhüln's chain of command like a rock. On the flanks of his behemoth warships, the artillery turrets finish training on their targets. The mainline kinetics are the first open up: massive shells, lobbed from towering artillery pieces, are hurled downrange from barrels in clumps of four at a fraction of a pace below lightspeed; at their largest they dwarf some of the ships they are targeting: the big-gun battleships fire a mixture of 325m long and 425m long shells, while the battlecruisers are content with the consistency of only 325m shells. These shells, a combination of semi-guided "smart" munitions and multi-stage HE penetrators, are soon greeted by the weapons of the monitors of the fleet...

Mere moments after the main ships erupt with fire from their millions of twin, three-gun, and quad batteries, the nam-Kyzhaq type monitors join the wild cacophony. They are equipped with the largest guns in the fleet, the formation-rending two kilometer wide barrels of the 2,000m PSKR. In this fight, however, Admiral Heinz is specific: the monitors are to utilize canister. Naxid warships are too flimsy and they lack the optimal number of large warships to warrant solid slug ordnance. Thus joining the main kinetics are vast plumes of canister and scattershot with the sole purpose of opening large holes in the Naxid formations.

As the kinetics of the fleet open up, the tri-barreled ENS/RPDC mounts begin to rev up to speed as well. They wait for the kinetics to finish their first four round clips before they join the fray. With PA interdiction in full swing, the ENS portion of the ENS/RPDC batteries remain silent, but the RPDCs are not limited in such a manner. The first batteries opens up. The putrid energies of the rift are detected across the system as the RPDCs begin to fire in rapid pace; the amounts detected are so vast as to fool casual observer into thinking a portal has been torn into the sickly realm. But this is not the case; the RPDCs lob clumps of living nanites (grown in the rift and infused with its energies) at great speed - just a tick under light; upon contact with hostile vessels the massive energy discharge is enough to locally rend space-time... Even through FTLi. They are kinetic-gravitic weapons, and are exceedingly dangerous; even the gravitic shockwave from a near miss is enough to cause damage.

Batteries have opened fire, Admiral.

Good, good, Zhüln says. In the void, plasma bolts crash against the outer Array shielding of the fleet; a few outer ships are seen throwing up point-defense fire as the weight of Naxid fire causes bolts to leak past. Zhüln sits back in his chair. Maintain positions, he orders.

Triskeli Fleet, Orbis IV

‘Glory, Glory, What a helluva way to die

The Triskeli ships had all reached their positions in the formation near Orbis IV, each one of the capital ships had unleashed swarms of ARC fighters which swarmed in amongst the capital ships, waiting for the enemy to mix in amongst their ranks like the locusts descending upon a swarm. At the same time a bright light was beaming from one Super Star Destroyer to another as the order had been given to activate the UMBRELLA defence network, a system which combined the strength of each ships shield system to one giant shield which would be used to protect the entire fleet from incoming ordinance and any that did enter would be swiftly picked at by the nanite cloud. The same cloud would be used to repair damage to ships which would allow the Triskeli fleet to remain in constant operation even when the odds were stacked against them.

Command Destroyer- ‘Reverence’

Grand Admiral Sykes stood in the dimly lit operations room which was deep within the Star Destroyer, most nations thought that Star Destroyers were commanded from the bridge, though in reality, anything of real importance was controlled from the operations room, often the bridge would be completely knocked out and the ship would continue to fight with no loss of control.

Sykes had the battle plan laid out in front of him, the Triskeli fleet was out numbered but by no means was it out of the game, it would stand and fight with what it had. At the center of the Triskeli defence plan was the new orbital stations which packed enough punch to with their newly developed MAC cannons which would knock out the shields of most vessels if not completely vaporize them. Though the issue they were facing first was the mass waves of missiles being sent their direction.

“My lord, the Umbrella defence network is up and holding strong.  Missiles are coming through but point defence, fighters and turbo laser banks are holding strong. However due to the large amount of incoming, we do expect sever damage to some ships in the outer formation, nanite clouds have been ordered to the area to repair any ships which request it†barked ensign Smith as his hands moved quickly over his defence controls.

Sykes didn’t really react to the new information but responded with a new order “Have ships on the edge of the formation prime and prepare to launch low yield tactical standoff weapons. The nova weaponry will destroy most of the incoming targets. Until then order all batteries aboard all vessels to fire upon all incoming missilesâ€. There was a slight shudder as nearby batteries began firing with immediate effect.

Talon Squadron, ARC Fighter

In reality, the combat outside was much closer and more lethal to those pilots in charge of taking down incoming missiles, ARC fighters roared in amongst the formation of super star destroyers, every few seconds the cockpit of CT15904 would flash bright blue as a nearby destroyer unleashed another volley of fire.

Pulling back on his stick he brought his fighter into the view of another missile heading towards the planet. Squeezing the trigger the fighter’s heavy cannons fired and connected with the missile shredding it into pieces. At the same time  watched as a nearby group of fighters detonated a removing them from existence, the debris smashed into the side of his cockpit and bounced off the heavy shielding. For a split second, he thought he noted the face of the pilot as it was crushed against the shielding. Deciding to not think about the obvious face mark on the side of his cockpit, he roared the fighter’s engines once more and flipped the craft back on itself to destroy a missile that had been behind it, flipping again face his original direction he watched as millions of missiles that hadn’t be stopped were impacting on the planet in front of him. His orders had been to protect all imperial vessels, not the locals and they were certainly paying for it on the surface.

Orbis I and Orbis II Fronts (<311.79 million ships)

As the shock of encountering a Tlaloc station over the star begins to fade away (and the hulks of hundreds of thousands of ships float off into the void), Naxid forces begin dropping back into longer-ranged combat; ships continue rotating in and out of line of battle to retain fresh shields as attention is brought more fully to countering the Tlaloc. They exchange missile fire with the Mri forces and seem to be staying off at longer range: it appears no headway is being made, however more concentrated swarms of missiles are lobbed off in an attempt to clear what's left of Orbis I away. The carriers, 37 kilometers in length, have more or less finished deploying their strike craft, and millions of these diminutive swarmites zoom towards the Mri in an attempt to get into weapons range to break the stalemate.

Orbis IV Front (<52.46 million ships)

The Triskeli are not greeted with close quarters combat. The fleet seems to find position a comfortable distance away from the Federation star destroyers and begins behaving in a manner similar as with against the Mri. Ships begin rotating in and out of the line of battle as the millions of ships open up in earnest. With news flowing back that a good chunk of the initial ordnance wave was successful in plastering the surface of Orbis IV, the fleet is free to engage the Triskeli fleet entirely, save for the bothersome contingent of Bro fighercraft that continue to pester and pick off warships. Already legions of interceptors begin to swarm the Broes with the expressed purpose of overwhelming and destroying them. For their part, each Triskeli ship is targeted by vast swathes of the Naxid contingent - individual vessels are picked out for focus fire by thousands of vessels, and a deluge of plasma, missile, and kinetic fire begins to stream forth towards them in unending, timed, streams with mere seconds of downtime before the next wave.

Asteroid Belt

The Alterran assault takes the Naxid forces by surprise in the Asteroid Belt. Tens of dozens of vessels are eliminated outright by the first wave of attacks, and a few hundred total are damaged by them by the time the second wave of attacks are completed. The reaction is swift: hoards of Naxid interceptors begin coalescing, and it soon becomes apparent that the rift fighters are outnumbered by a hideous margin. This of course is in conjunction with the Naxid warships' own defensive fire, which begins to dot the void and pepper it with plasma bolts and kinetic slugs.

Orbis V and Orbis VI Fronts (<625.08 million ships; <56.96 million ships)

The lack of proper defenses in the Orbis V and Orbis VI planet-systems begins to become problematic... For the defenders. The four large moons of Orbis V begin to see large fortifications crop up on them as Naxid forces burrow into their crusts and set up shop. Already energy signatures from shielding arrays can be detected as Jupiter and its moons fall firmly into the Naxid grasp and the fleet, still hundreds of millions of ships strong, goes onto the defensive. Saturn does not fare much better. Naxid forces begin pouring onto Titan and before long they will have heavy infrastructure established here as well.

Orbis VII and Orbis VIII Fronts (<446.70 million ships)

The hive controlling the forces near Uranus has recovered and makes note of the stiff resistance coming from Zhüln's divisions and the Voznayali fortress. A detachment twenty million strong peels away from the main fleet to engage the station directly. They bring with them many large craft and a truly disgusting swarm of fighters and interceptors. The main fleet, however, has seen Zhüln's formations succeed for long enough. The lead Naxid formations, completely shattered by the hideous salvo of relativistic ordnance, rotates back into the line. Regular firing patterns for this fleet begin to focus on Zhüln and Zhüln's fleet only; they seem to be ignoring the rest of the Nalydian host.

In general, the Naxid forces here seem to be absorbing the Nalydian counters in stride; the trans-universal gate, floating in-between Uranus and Neptune, is targeted as a contingent some thirty million strong steam off in its direction.

At Orbis VIII a general meeting engagement has begun. Naxid forces engage their Pordish counterparts at range, seeking first to hammer down their fleet-spanning shields, and - once that is complete - focus fire the big ships down first. Already the stubborn nature of the rift-infused Arrays is rearing its head, but nothing holds up to fire forever...

Pluto; Kuiper Belt

Naxid forces arrive at Pluto. Equipment is brought planetside and structures begin to take shape. The same scene plays out throughout the small icy worlds of the Kuiper belt. With nothing in the region to contest them, they make considerable headway.

System Natynozh

Massive VOID signatures herald the arrival of another Naxid hive with roughly 800 million ships in tow. They burst through the heavy planet-based FTLi fields and begin closing in on the planet Natynozh. Like elsewhere throughout the PW-1 universe they have come to attack UMS forces. Here specifically, the newly-colonized Nalydian world of Natynozh.

ISIS' Loving Smile, Command Deck

Despite the best efforts of Bro interceptors and even mightier Triskeli fighters, many missiles still struck the surface of the world.  Entire landmasses began showing clear signs of moltenization, and it was clear that much was beyond saving.

Yet still, they had to fight on!

"Admiral Delacroix to all ships, it appears that the Naxids are ignoring our fleet to concentrate on our allies.  Let us show them how foolish they are!  It's been an honor, Comrades.  Let's make our people proud!  All surviving fighters, break off your attack!  Recommend Evasive Pattern Theta:  We're opening our big guns!"

The swarm of fighters had thinned now, and the counterswarm of enemy fighters greatly intensified the tragedy.  The maelstrom of violence made it difficult to tell exactly with visual inspection, but hundreds or perhaps even thousands of fighters had met their end.  But when their Admiral commanded them, the fighters quickly broke off their attacks and fled every which way, twisting and twirling to evade enemy reprisals.

For moments after their fighters got away, the Bro fleet opened fire!

Massive Kinetic Rounds, ranging from a medium-sized school bus (15m) to small skyscrapers (80m) hurled out at speeds of over half the speed of light hurled at the Naxids, but they were perhaps the lesser threats.

Giant beams of Positrons were hurled from Disruptor Lancers across the fleet, their yields intended to carve moons and slice warship hulls flew towards the enemy hive, but they too were not the 'main attraction.'

No, a swarm such as the Naxids seemed vulnerable to one particular weapon type:  The Magnetically Accelerated Grenade.

Specifically designed as an elaborate denial-of-area ordinance in space, the MAGs would fill the void with shrapnel and, often, smaller missiles of various kinds.  Antimatter MAGs, the standard issue for Brotherhood fleets, proved the most devastating even though civilian 'kinetic' MAGs would also spell doom for fighters and other small craft.  While perhaps even hundreds of MAGs would not prove that devastating to a foe as great as the Naxids, all 700 Brotherhood warships unleashed thousands of them.  Soon the void in which the Naxids flew flashed and was filled with the near constant glow of explosions and, unfortunately for the Naxids, antimatter MAG spines attempting to rip through their hulls and detonate to obliterate the flesh within.

Perhaps this would not be enough to deter 60 million enemy ships, but surely it would demonstrate that they were not dealing with defenseless prey!

(OOC:  Based on the MAG weapon type from the game Transcendence.  It's essentially a grenade as it fills the space between player ship and enemy fleet with shrapnel that quickly rips through enemy shields and pulverizes hulls.  MAG 'eruptions' linger in the void for a bit of time after the initial explosion, making them perfect for groups of fast moving foes that attempt to close their distance with the player)

IC:

Enemy interceptor swarms who managed to get past the initial fury of MAGs flew head first into wave upon wave of bursts from the hundreds of point defense turrets installed on every Brotherhood capital ship.  With enough larger capital ships in the mix, as many as 150,000 point defense guns would be firing at once.  Perhaps several Naxid Interceptors met their end rather quickly, and those who survived had to deal with yet another 540 Bro fighters who were rapidly launched from the Starbase.

Their reserves might have been depleted early, but the Brotherhood fleet would fight on.

Interversal Gate, Near Uranus

The gate began to glow, and the telltale jagged edge of a starship began to emerge!

With two prongs in the front and a rapidly emerging blade-like hull, the first of several Brotherhood Tiandao class Dreadnoughts had arrived, with squadrons of support vessels hurling out after it!  Swiftly, swiftly an entire World Fleet of 10,000 Brotherhood Ships were the first to emerge from the Gate, with at least 50 Dreadnoughts among them.  As the fleet gathered, thousands of them began hurling towards Orbis IV as swiftly as they could, acknowledging the FTLi field as they hurled forth to save their brethren.

Bridge of the AIN Piercing The Darkness

Duvaine read off the results, "Empress, I'm picking up more than 20 times the number of incoming interceptors than we sent out - We've got about 8,000 incoming - plus the larger vessels."

Romana was thinking as she studied the holo-interface. Hearing the results read off by the Commander, the Empress smirked, "Localize AEON to the Rift Fighters and prepare to have them come together for target strikes."

AURORA spoke, "AEON is prepared. All Rift Fighters report capable for union. I am detecting an incoming wave of plasma and kinetic weaponry, gaining on the Rift Fighters. I am calculating that without AEON intervention, there is a 74.321% probability that more than 35% of the fighters will be destroyed."

Romana inquired, "With AEON?"

AURORA replied, "98.1402% probability that less than 5 fighters will be lost."

Commander Duvaine ordered, "Activate the localized AEON."

The Rift Fighters seemed to redouble their efforts, joining together in a tightly woven flight pattern, the ships swirling and swarming like insects. As they all fell into formation, the space around the fighters began to buzz with a strange energy. Thousands of pinpricks of light flashed for less than a second and suddenly intense gravometric distortions began to form, bend, flex, and change it's own shape randomly, altering the courses of the kinetic and plasma weaponry that had been targeting the Rift Fighters.  Due to the motion and movement of the distortions, some of the bolts of plasma and slugs managed to break through and still catch up to the back of the Rift Fighter formation.  Three Rift Fighters took slugs and bolts through the tail - each one taking heavy damage. On two of the vessels, the impulse drives were badly damaged and on the other the ship's engine driver had been directly punctured with a slug. Within moments - each of the ships exploded.

The remaining 397 ships seemed to alter their formation to resemble a sphere - the strange energy that was forming seemed to be emanating from the interior of the sphere-like formation - putrid Rift Energies were detected forming on the interior.  The Rift Sphere Fighters redoubled on the Expeditionary Fleet - all vessels opening a full fire barrage on the Naxid interceptors - with a goal of taking the fight to the larger mother ships in the expeditionary fleet.  Hundreds of thousands of bolts of ionic energy, plasma bolts, and rails of hassium-ossium - a droplet of antimatter suspended in each for release on impact.  In addition, hundreds of antimatter torpedos were fired into the Naxid interceptor fleet.  The AEON distortions seemed to bend and flex, providing cover to the Alterran kinetics and improving the probability of striking intended targets.

Bridge of the AIN Spirit of Alterra

Commander Marc Derweduwen sat in the Command Chair of the vast Alterran Warship and asked, "AURORA - Time to arrival?"

AURORA replied, "We are preparing for entry into the Orbis System, Commander. We are scheduled to descend in the heart of the star. The Piercing The Darkness reports FTLi clearance upon arrival for travel to the Jovian Moons."

SubCommander Paris reported, "All stations report ready, Commander."

"Descend." The Commander ordered.

The Spirit of Alterra and it's Capital Fleet of 1,275 ships descended from The Rift with a very smooth and elegant transition - though as it was done on the central interior of the star - none could see or observe.  As each ship appeared in the heart of the star, it seemed to almost instantly appear in very close proximity to the Naxid Fleet nearest the Europan moon.

The Spirit of Alterra Fleet:  1 Warship - 25 Battleships - 25 Battle Cruisers - 224 Destroyers - 400 Cruisers - 600 Corvettes

The 2,400km long behemoth Warship entered the Jovian System, surrounded by it's fleet - each ship equipped with hundreds or thousands of fighters and an arsenal designed for both ranged and close proximity warfare.  As the Alterrans arrived - they immediate began to deploy defenses and prepare for the first volley against this foe.

Orbis VII and VIII Fronts

Towards the Rear of the Naxid Forces Attacking the Voznayali Fortress and the Trans-Universal Gate

There comes a time when, holistically speaking, the universe just kind of...pulls together. When this happens we can see extraordinary examples of happenstance, extreme coincidental junctures, occur. No doubt the Naxid fleets had planned and prepared their merciless attacks on the Orbis system with meticulous precision and detail. The friction of battle, those unforeseen occurrences of war, can be mitigated by such things. However, sometimes, things just happened, things that couldn't be planned for, mitigated or even foreseen by the greatest oracles, soothsayers and others of that ilk.

Certainly this was the case when the gigantic prow of the 188km long RSL Grand Karak, one of three super-capital flagships of the Katasian Ryksmarine, came crashing from the ether as it entered a new and strange universe. Such ships had a well-founded reputation for their incredible defensive properties, this well-worn maxim held true as the massive ship simply pierced or crushed its way through all those Naxid ships in its path, ending only after a 150km Naxid dreadnought was rent asunder as the Karak plunged through its core.

This trend continued as just over a hundred more Katasian ships, each 35-165km in length, also entered the system. The variance in type and purpose of these ships was large, capital class battelships jockeyed for position with destroyers, battlecruisers, frigates, supply ships and the long range monitor guns that were ships unto themselves. Each surveyed the carnage before them, where had Dr. Haustrom's infernal device taken them?

Bridge of the RSL Grand Karak

The vulpinaen Captain Dusty-Face*, his fox like features brushed down and immaculate in defiance of his own name, had been ready to enjoy a glass of milk. It was, to all intents and purposes, a great glass of milk. It was fresh, chilled just right and it had come in a simple glass that nonetheless had a gold gilt ring around the rim, something he thought added a touch of class to a beverage. Yes, this was about as close to a perfect glass of milk as the universe would allow without violently rejecting it for violating several natural laws.

Sure, his ship and others had been buffeted by the storms of whatever hellscape they had passed through to arrive here. Sure this had put them slightly off course from the rest of the Exodus Fleet, which was concerning to say the least when one is entering a totally new universe, and, yes, he had committed a grievous faux pas in the officers mess yesterday when he had forgotten that gazpacho soup is served cold...

..but...

...this was an amazing glass of milk. The kind that soothed the soul and cured all ills.

Now it lay shattered, just like his hopes of a quiet day and a more peaceful new life in a vibrant and thriving new universe. Battle was upon him, whether he liked it or not, unnecessary asides about milk be damned!

He steadied himself and joined the stunned silence of a pretty conclusively confused bridge staff. The screech of a windscreen wiper blade clearing viscera from the large view port overlooking the bow deck of the ship and the rows of its mighty 1600m gun arrays roused them all their stupor.

"What in the Watcher did we just hit?" Dusty-Face asked of no one in particular

"A swarm of insects it appears" volunteered a young katasian technician "which, if I might say sir, is pretty unusual for space"

Damage reports and hails from other ships were now coming in as the Naxids began to recover from the shock and started plinking the various hulls of the Katasian ships with their lighter weapons. Captain Dusty-Face took up the mantle of doctrine and swiftly assuaged all panic by declaring himself Admiral-Nominate of the Combined Fleet, effective immediately. Doctrine had been followed, all knew their place within the fleet and all flexibly formed around the complex line of seniority that had been drilled into each and every officer. Now it was time to get to business, he grabbed the fleet-comm and had himself patched through.

"This is Admiral-Nominate Dusty-Face of the Grand Karak. Battle order is as follows, leverage the gouges in their lines and clear a perimeter around the fleet, all heavy ships are to form a bulwark centered on the Karak and protect all other ships in the line, then we fight through the interdiction to the nearest point of withdrawal. Activate all defences, ready all battle stations, release all fighting boats and have stores distribute RFLX to fighting stations and pilots. Glory to Katasia"

The affirmative battle cries in response came in showers through the neural comm network, filling his mind with information, both pertinent and not, about the coming battle. He popped a RFLX pill to steady himself and felt immediately more in control of proceedings. The combat drug, developed in the later stages of the Katasian Empire, made everything around the user slow down whilst it sent their mind racing, what followed was the ability to perform complex analysis at an astonishing rate with excellent competency. There were hazards to over use in the short term but reserve forces could take over posts when necessary, allowing the Katasians to retain some semblance of an edge over more technologically adept state's military machines.

The rush came all at once as Dusty-Face was presented with the expected question contained within naval doctrine when facing circumstances such as these, all at once the entire fleet seemed to cry out

"Targets Admiral-Nominate?"

"Everything" he responded before the first wave of annihilation from the Katasian fleet poured forth upon the Naxids.

Old Friends

Admiral Manster Heinz sips his drink slowly as the displays show the battle unfolding before him. The Naxids, in usual fashion, are pressing him and his men hard. The grand "Voznayali" shipyard-fortress, more than a match for vast ranks of Naxids alone, has come under direct assault. He watches a massive salvo of fire survive through the phalanxes of point defense and combined shielding to splash upon the heavy armour of the station; vast plumes jolt out into space as the station absorbs the damage. In return the Naxids are received of powerful solid Array attacks as the commander of the station sees fit to revert more power over to offensive measures rather than sit defensively. He nods.

Admiral Zhüln is being pressured, Heinz notes. He moves markers on the displays; the vessel formations acquiesce and begin shifting. He waves his hand; Zhüln's hologram appears.

Admiral Zhüln, Heinz beings.

Tasi, Zhüln replies with a salute.

Roll your formations back into the main line. It'll be better to disperse their fire across the greater fleet, Heinz orders.

Zhüln salutes again: Tasinehdao, he shoots back.

The battle though, has already overstayed its welcome: VRZ Generous Kingdom Alabaster, a 108km Kornat Hanüch type battlecruiser from Zhüln's main line, is focused by a swarm of larger Naxid craft. The sheer volume of fire being squeezed into such a small area guarantees some of it will penetrate the Nalydian screens. Waves do, and they begin raining down on the surface of the Pordish behemoth. The battlecruiser begins to withdraw out of range, but not before her entire surface is raked by plasma and missile fire. Blister turrets are ripped open and gantries flung far and wide; vast streams of LNS slosh back into impact craters, but the damage has already been done. The scene is similar throughout many of the ships of Zhüln's formation as they begin a fighting withdrawal back to the main section of the Pordish fleet.

We're losing Natyl & Mylchar integrity, Admiral, an officer suddenly notes. Multiple more signatures are emerging... I'm not sure what... Wait..

Heinz moves the displays. What's this now? Heinz questions. He points to the Naxid formations and what appear to be... Warships plowing through them.

These signatures are... Abnormal, sensors operator says. But they're... Familiar.

For a full minute the bridge is silent. Then... Admiral Heinz:

By Amaruq's wide tundra..!

Again silence drops across the bridge. But one by one the officer present begin to make the same realization that Admiral Heinz has made. The signatures... Are Katasian.

Message them. Tell them Admiral Manster Heinz with the Nalydian 6th Fleet and allies are defending this system from the Naxid threat, Admiral Heinz says.

Tasi, comes a reply, tasinehdao!

The message is sent off to the new Katasian arrivals. The blundering of Ryk ships into the fray is... Convenient, at least for the VRZ and her allies. With the Broes and Alterrans also fielding fleets in-system, it would appear that the Naxids will not be having as easy a time as they likely assumed.

BPS Qian Xuesen, Bridge

The multiverse was a strange place.

Beings long thought dead were often encountered once more.

But for all their search, the old friends of their motherverse of FBN-1 were rarely encountered.  Both the Orz Disaster and the Great Cataclysm seemed to have made sure of that.

And yet the unthinkable happened.

"Commodore, Long Range Sensors have picked up additional ships entering the system.  Friendly configuration, but-"

"Make it quick, Lieutenant."

"They're, they're Katasian sir."

The Commodore blinked.  Katasia and her role in Laptev were discussed in history textbooks, but most historians seemed to agree that the Brotherhood lost all contact with them during the Orz Disaster.  While Katasian and Ingenious starships attempted to rescue massacred civilians, they were too late to stop the Orz.  A certain First Brotherhood Starbase, the Red Star had been a major source of contention between Orz troops and Katasian warriors after the Orz slaughtered the entire crew.

"Sir, Naxid vessels inbound.  If we abandon the gate we may remain trapped."

"Send a message to Admiral Ak-Baak.  As he commands the flagship we will follow his lead."

"...  We've already received orders, sir.  The good Admiral and our ship shall hold the line along with twenty other Dreadnoughts.  The rest will make a break for ISIS' Lovely Smile and our brethren in Martian orbit.  Our escorts have been split in half between both fleets."

"Then let our old friends see what we are capable of now!  Launch all fighters!  Our Bombers shall fill their ships with our fury!"

A combined swarm of over 200,000 fighters fell upon the Naxid fleet.

Behind the fighters, the Bro fleet swiftly got into position, sallying forth firing positronic beams and mass diver slugs at the incoming horde.  Gunners prepared Torpedoes and MAGs for the inevitable final showdown, but the enemy was still just out of range.

(OOC: Or in the case of the MAGs we still need to consider friendly fire lolz.)

Orbis IV Front - Combat vs Bro Contingent

The Bro fightercraft continue to find that they are having no difficulty in eliminating Naxid forces. And now, with the bro fleet engaging them as well, it seems that their fightercraft are beginning to withdraw. This, actually, is more of an attempt to bring the fighting back to under the cover of guns from the main force to aid them in eliminating the Broes, however. A volley of a couple hundred million missiles is loosed from the fleet, and heads for the 700 or so Bro contingent now targeting them.

Asteroid Belt

The Naxids are surprised their volleys seem to be persuaded off course, but nothing fancy occurs in return as the Alterrans begin more advanced operations. The distortions are noted, however. Hundreds of interceptors are swatted aside, but they appear almost... Endless. It seems they have at least hundreds of thousands of these interceptors, if not millions, in the area - most just have not yet gathered to throw their weight against the Alterrans. The count of actual large ships is smaller, but still is not insignificant.

Orbis V and Orbis VI Fronts

Saturn has fallen to the Naxids. Titan is now heavily fortified and millions of Naxid warriors take up positions within the rapidly growing tunnel networks beneath its surface.

Alterran fleet emerges into real space deployed against the largest of the Naxid fleets, still largely untouched by battle. Heavy ground based batteries on the Galilean Moons begin targeting what they can with heavy ordnance seemingly almost immediately, while streams of fighters begin forming up to eventually attack. Surprise, though, is on the Alterran side as the Naxid formations are not set up for fleet engagement and it seems, almost, that they are but for a moment paralyzed as they shuffle around attempting to place themselves between the Alterrans and the hive.

Orbis VII and Orbis VIII Fronts

The Katasian intrusion is an unwelcome one. Craft go flying and formations rent asunder as the Ryk warships pull into the verse. The Naxids are taken by surprise, but fortunately, the sheer volume of the fleet means entire sections have not yet come under Katasian bombardment... Yet. Sections near the Katasians, however, are very unlucky as the large bore and high yield Ryk ordnance pounds away and knocks ships out of commission with relative ease.

By the Station "Voznayali," Naxid elements have reached stalemate. They switch track, and begin targeting Uranus itself and the moons. The main fleet, now pressuring Admiral Zhüln, presses onward regardless of the Katasian intervention, and soon vast plumes of ordnance begin slamming into the fleet-spanning shields of the primary Nalydian fleet. The same sight plays out by Neptune; stalemate continues in earnest with Naxid warships dropping in droves with no visible headway made by either side.

Trans-Universal Gate Front

The Bro fleet emerges and sets course for the inner system, but even at maximum sublight it will take hours to reach Orbis IV. For the time being though, a large salvo of fire slams into the flank of the Broes from the thirty million Naxid ships sent to secure the gate as they pull into this 'verse. The fleet moves on an intercept course aiming to prevent them from joining with UMS forces elsewhere. Already waves of interceptors begin peeling away from the main force and they start speeding towards this newly arrived UMS contingent, lobbing missiles and firing off plasma and kinetics all the while. Special attention is paid to the inbound waves of interceptors, and very soon they are mixed in with the Naxids and battle is joined.

Pluto; Kuiper Belt

The icy outer bodies now are home to a number of infested worlds. Naxids have begun to set up heavy equipment, and powerful shielding arrays can be detected far into the inner Orbis System.

The Triskeli Fleet

With the increase amount of ordinance coming at the Triskeli shield system, it only began to grow in power and resistance to incoming rounds as energy bolts were absorbed and nanites quickly deposed of slugs that entered the shield. At the same time, nanite clouds could be seen swarming around the capital ships repairing superficial damage had been caused by the increase fire the Naxid swarm.  From inside the bubble, the Triskeli destroyers now responding with all weapons at their arsenal, from heavy rapid fire turbolasers to nonstop streams of missiles, all of which could be seen harrowing towards the Naxid fleet.

Command Destroyer

Sykes watched the nearby holo feed, which displayed one side of the shield where millions of missiles and other rounds were impacting. He was not worried with the amount of ordnance that was incoming, the Triskeli had dealt with this before and had developed the technology to feed off weapons to generate energy to sustain their shielding. None of the Imperial ships had exited the shield and all were firing to their maximum capacity, though Sykes knew that the battle was nowhere near won and it would be an uphill struggle to probably even escape with his own fleet.

Nearby several Officers also stood, watching a nearby feed of the battle. “Have the fleet fire low yield nova weaponry at the Naxid fleet. They are to exhaust all low yield supplies and then report back†he paused for a second “At the same time, while the shields are up, each ship is to lower shield power by 20% and refocus those into energy weapons and begin to target vital systems on the nearest ship and then move onto the nextâ€.

One of the officers replied “Yes, my lord†and disappeared into another part of the dark room to communicate the orders with ships in the fleet.

Within minutes of the orders being sent the first volleys of missiles were being launched, each super star destroyer was able to launch up to 10,000 warheads every ten seconds. As the missiles left their tubes and screamed across space, as they left the shield they were enveloped within a smaller shield which surrounded the missile as it headed towards the target, though these shields realistically would only be able to within stand mild energy fire and projectile fire, though when the missile was penetrated the detonation would occur and a small star would vaporize the objects around it before collapsing in on itself, crushing the targets around them. The missiles broke in different directions, most either went frontally at the fleet, attempting to detonate in front of the swarms, while the others came from the sides and attempted to reach the rear to encompass them in different blasts, though no one knew how many would really reach the Naxid fleet.

At the rear of the fleet was the two orbital defense stations which had up until now not taken part in the battle. Each station had four turrets, each with four barrels, capable of firing multiple slugs at high speeds. These stations began to turn their attention to the larger ships in the Naxid fleet with their first volley of high velocity slugs.

Fighters within the Triskeli formation had since left the missiles alone and were now preparing for ship to ship combat, each craft carried four torpedoes which they would attempt to use to weaken the smaller Naxid ships with a followed attack from their heavy cannons which were mounted on either wing.
