nationalism?

what is your opinion on nationalism?

my opinion is it is good thing and nations need to be proud of their themselves! a nationalist society where people are united for the nation working strong all equal under a socialistic economy type can work. sadly there is lack of national pride in the western world in this day and age unlike the old where countries like England and Spain built massive empires.

if people are proud for their nation. they will work together to make it strong. look at modern world and suicide rates. if those people had something to march forward on the nation they wouldn't do such things. human beings are social creatures. the function of man is the build nations to become strong with other people and to be loyal to his group.

i suggest nationalist beliefs be taught to children in the education system at a young age as something to do as goal in life. most children sadly dont and we get a large group of narcissistic people. which is big problem with younger generation. if people have no value in country. how will country last??? it wont. look at america. it's falling apart and nobody cares for the nation. liberal, homosexual and islamic elements are let into nation destroying it from inside out. i predict america will fall in the future if trump doesn't get in within 20 to 30 years

Big supporter of Nationalism me, it's a uniting force unlike that contemptible multiculturalism. It's making a return recently which is nice to see, won't stop the zealots of multiculturalism blaming all the ills of the world on Nationalism which has been a non factor for ages but whatever, less and less people listen to those types anyway.

pan arab nationalism would be a dream come true.

You'd best push back in importance the religious matters then. Nationalism should be seen as above religion in importance if such a thing is to be possible... that and you'd need someone in America who'd not try to wreck everything for the Saudis... ummm, better yet just put the House of Saud's heads on pikes, that'd make things easier.

On the topic of Israel vs. Arabs

"If you mean who's side should we be on, Israel or the Arabs, then I would say Israel because it's the advanced, technological, civilized country against a group [the Arabs] who are completely primitive, savages who have not changed for years who are racist and resent Israel because it's breathing industry and intellegence and modern technology against their [the Arabs] stagnation."

As to why the Arabs are savages and not Israel.

"I don't resort to terrorism, I don't go around murdering my opponents, and innocent women and children and that is what I have against the Arabs. That takes the conflict out of civilized conflict and makes the conflict murderous private citizens who resort to force is a monster, which makes me condemn and depise them."- Ayn Rand

You just hate them because they have western influence and the fact that they are more developed then the other Arab nations.

You'll have to define more developed there. They're more backwards than a lot of Arabs no matter how many fancy buildings they get their slaves to build or how fancy their cars and suits their oil money buys them.

As for their influence most say is due to resources but thats nonsense, regime change could be done to get such things easily enough. The real reason I'd say is that the Saudis are nice agents against the Muslims, their worst enemy in fact who masquerades as the most devout of Muslims. A nice big joke that.

Nationalism is not one thing. There are a variety of different forms of nationalism. Civic nationalism, for example, is rooted in republican/classical liberal values, and was the driving force of liberation for Europe, and many other parts of the world, from the clutches of imperialism, monarchy, and feudalism over the last few centuries. Left-wing nationalism is very similar to civic nationalism, in that, they both focus on national liberation. Unfortunately, the downside of civic nationalism is that it sometimes leads to ultranationalism, which is icky. You also have ethnic and religious nationalism, which although have played a similar role as their civic counterpart in history, also sometimes become the basis for ethnocentrism and religious fundamentalism; which are equally detestable. You also have economic nationalism, sometimes confused with socialistic nationalism; which is when an economic system, or partial economy, is controlled by the state; as in the public sector of the U.S. economy. And then you have territorial nationalism, which is the idea of nation-states and a social obligation to patriotism; but often also leads to chauvinism, jingoism, and territorial violence; which are rather dangerous in their own right.

Final assessment:

Nationalism can be a good thing; but only if it doesn't lead to ultranationalism, ethnocentrism, religious fundamentalism, jingoism, territorial violence, statist economic systems, expansionism, and/or overall authoritarian government.

Israel is disgusting. There is nothing to be desired in their society. The Arabs are forced to resort to guerrilla tactics because a huge conspiracy of very powerful international interests from decades ago, drove them off their freakin land. The !@#$ would you do?

As for nationalism, it's kind of stupid, but it's always going to exist. I'm not sure what makes you think America is not nationalist, because we are very nationalist. That has nothing to do with being a racist, homophobic !@#$ fascist. Those are two different things, Captain.

My mistake in my wording, I agree with you but in a rush to sum it all up quickly I gave the wrong idea. I was going for more they make themselves out to be the greatest force for Muslims in the world and all that, but in actuality they are one of the main reasons so much is wrong. Muslims tend to put America at the top of the enemy list, followed by Israel or alternatively simply the Jews, but really the Saudis top the list it's just most Muslims can't see it or as the religion uses a lot of fear they dare not say it.

Each nation/state should be free to choose its own path, whether authoritarian, liberal, etc. Only expansionism warrants foreign intervention. Keep in mind that expansionist tendencies can also arise from factors other than nationalism. Your general mindset, in fact hints of a liberal imperialism, namely the superiority of western liberal ideas.

Yes, German nationalism (Kaiserliche, NSDAP, etc.) is generally looked upon with disdain. Why? Because German nationalism led to several wars resulting from German expansionism. Nationalism, and illiberalism, however, are not exclusively expansionist.

Would you call for an attack against an authoritarian, nationalist state that practises statist economic policies, but kept to itself?.

The west has its notions of good. Other societies have their own notions of social good. In the end, only one thing matters to the denizen of a given society, the assurance that he will see the next day.

What do you mean even Israel, Israel is the only reasonably free country in the middle east.

If I had to live in the middle east then it would be Israel.
