  1. I was a bit skeptical at first, but my alliance gave me a significant development aid package that really kickstarted my growth. I'm happy to pay it forward later.
  2. How do you lower odds for attacking spies? By having more spies on hand?
  3. It wouldn't really make sense for an air attack to steal money, assuming an air attack is like a bombing raid.
  4. I agree there's a behind-the-scenes involving oil interests, but I disagree that capitalism is the cause, I see it as merely the mechanism in our case. If the US disappeared tomorrow, you can bet that state-owned oil interests from Russia and China would move to fill in the gap.
  5. Nothing important here, just wanted to throw this out because I found it slightly interesting: According to my calculations, the in-game date will sync up with and surpass the RL date on June 17, 2017.
  6. Wouldn't it add something to bicker and go to war over?
  7. I'm interested to know more.
  8. I agree that is probably the best option. I didn't mean to indicate that Assad is the cause of the problem, only that his presence complicates the West's strategic calculus. We are left with the status quo ante of supporting dictators against less palatable elements.
  9. I used to get a blank page for this, today I got this message: "You have already been involved in a war with *person* within the last 84 turns. You can declare war again in -5532.2916666667 turns."
  10. Haven't we learned anything from the last 13 years? We didn't stop AQ "once and for all," we didn't stop the Taliban "once and for all." You can't completely eradicate an underground organization with force, because they melt away and hide until an opportune time. We'll bleed ourselves dry if we keep trying. We need realistic goals, and supporting the Iraqi army in reclaiming their own territory is far more realistic. ISIS has only met with success so far because they've been expanding into a power vacuum; they have almost no chance to actually defeat any one of the hard targets that surround them (Turkey, Iran, Shia Iraq, Israel, Saudi Arabia), and certainly no chance to defeat all of them. Assad is the real monkey wrench in all of this, because hurting ISIS helps him regain ground and consolidate his position, and this is the real genius of ISIS's grand strategy, because attacking the enemy of our enemy gives Obama pause.
  11. As the title says. Do defensive battles consume munitions/gasoline?
  12. These statements appear to be compatible with each other after a bit of math-checking. Thanks!
  13. Is commerce just a flat percent bonus to daily income in a city? For example, if a bank increases commerce by 7%, and my city has an average income of $2.35, would a bank increase that city's income by 7% of $2.35? This makes the most sense to me, but the tooltip description doesn't give details on the math of it.
  14. It never even crossed my mind that someone would read my posts in Hedonism Bot's voice. Now I can't stop hearing it.
  15. Very, very cool and useful Why does nothing show up under "stream" view though?
  16. Wonderful, thank you.
  17. Do power-requiring improvements "use up" any actual amount of power, or do they simply require power to be adequate for the infrastructure level?
  18. I conducted a ground attack, and this is part of the message that was auto-sent to my opponent (emphasis added): "This loss has resulted in your opponent gaining ground control. Ground control halves the amount of your aircraft you can use in airstrikes. To end your opponent's air superiority you must execute a ground battle that is a success, another player must achieve an immense triumph ground battle on your opponent, or you must destroy all of your opponent's soldiers and tanks." But I don't have air superiority, I have ground control.
  19. CPI inflation is already down to 1.7%, from a peak of 4.1% in 2007 (source, data drawn from BLS). A main purpose of deficit spending and expansionist monetary policy over the past 7 years has been to avoid a deflationary trap like the one Japan suffered for a generation and only recently escaped. Even with low inflation, productivity gains aren't being reflected in wages; I would expect the labor market equilibrium you propose to exacerbate this, not solve it.

  21. Not a huge fan of Paul Krugman, but he makes the interesting case here that Texas' recent growth is more due to lower land values than a better business climate: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/15/opinion/the-texas-unmiracle.html?_r=0
  22. Jobs aren't designed for the benefit of the worker at all, or with any thought to their future.
