The virus isn't able to spread through the air alone, it needs to hitch a wide on water droplets that people cast off when they breathe, talk or cough. Masks break up the airflow out of a person, which, if proper social distancing is being followed, limits the ability of droplets to travel before they fall to the ground harmlessly.

Also, the article you shared had a correction pointing out a fault in the original study and now supports the opposite conclusion.
