  8. Both Terminal Jest under previous administrations and I personally have a longstanding history of accompanying any declaration of war with an outlined justification. We believe that -whether our counterparts and the community as a whole agree with our reasoning or not-, the provision of a reason beyond just shedding pixels is always preferred above wars for war’ sake. Over the past two weeks, I have received various requests for a presentation of our reason or war. When I posted the Terminal Jest's placeholder declaration of war, I intended to uphold that ideological tenet by eventually circling back to it to properly outline our Casus Belli. Unfortunately, RL circumstances (OOC: I am lazy as frick) led to a lack of time, and a long delay. You have my apologies for that. So… Strap in. Wall of text inbound! 1. 9. I quit the game because of the way wars work now. There is something seriously wrong with a game that claims, in the wiki, that "Another primary use of Score is to ensure that only similarly sized nations are able to declare war on each other. This prevents very large nations from picking on very small nations." But then in reality one sees 25-city nations, having sold their infra and military, declaring on 10-city nations (and rebuilding mil afterwards). But what got me was the sheer bloody tedium of not being able to defeat bigger opponents when I could because of the advantage beige would have given them. Specific example: 3 20-city nations declare on my 12-city nation. Two have only troops, one has a few planes and tanks. So I get some satisfaction striking those planes and tanks. But for the other two I quickly realize (especially as these guys all have ground control) that the amount of gas and munitions it costs me to strike their soldiers is far more than the cost of replacing the 20k soldiers I can kill. Similarly, infra strikes it seem pointless, they are expensive and they have so little infra left. So I just sit there in my fortressed nation and they launch the occasional ground strike, after which we both buy soldiers. And I though to myself, three more months of this dismal tedium? For this I built my nation? Where's the delete button? If the suggestion had been implemented and I had been able to defeat them without beiging them, I might have had an incentive to continue the game, or at least continue it longer. Games have to be fun. These sorts of wars aren't fun. I might be able to put up with it for two or three weeks, but not for months, and certainly not several times a year. P.S.: I am well aware that as someone who quit I have no right to post here, and will not do so again, but I think Alec might be interested to hear why someone quit, and that his suggestion might have kept them in the game longer.

  12. So the intent of my posts in this thread are mainly just about clarifying information in regard to t$ when we are mentioned. So I'm going to respond to this as well. The agreement between BK and NPO is not a foundational doctrine of the NPO/t$/HS grouping. At most, only one person from t$/HS knew of it (i.e. no one from HS knew about it), and that person is now inactive and can neither confirm nor deny the claims in question. If the claim is true that Kayser did indeed agree to this, he never informed anyone else in t$. It is also important to note that a single tri in t$ doesn't even have the authority to unilaterally agree to such a term on behalf of t$, as it would require support from the other two tri's as well. So he could have agreed to support it himself and to try and convince the rest of t$ gov, but he could not commit t$ to it himself. Additionally, when the new head of FA (one of our oldest members and former tri, Sisyphus/Wilhelm) took over following Kayser's departure, the 'doctrine' was never mentioned to him at all by allied gov until after NPO approached t$ about expanding the war beyond Guardian and GOB, even though if it was considered something that t$ had agreed to, it would had made sense to bring it up far earlier and quite aggressively. So that tells you that NPO was aware of the validity of this 'doctrine' when it came to t$. So maybe this is something Kayser said he would support, but I have no doubt he never would have been able to make it happen even if he was still around—maybe that explains some things... And anyone with basic knowledge of how triumvirates work and internal t$ politics would know the same. So this could be another strategic miscalculation on NPO's part to try to make a side agreement with an individual gov member, but not the gov in itself; or it could be something was lost in translation between Kayser and NPO. With Kayser no longer being around, it is hard to say. But I can say that not only was it not a foundational doctrine of the NPO/t$/HS grouping, it wasn't something that t$/HS agreed to at all. heh, I creeped on you and saw your nation is penis shaped. What a glorious feat. If only all nations were penis shaped. I approve.

  22. It's not slotfilling. Slotfilling was very clearly *cough vaguely cough* defined (formatted for highlight): "Declaring war on a nation without the intention of fighting them is punishable by a nation strike and additional punishment for multiple violations. You are not allowed to declare war on nations to prevent them from being attacked by other nations. This same rule applies with spies and espionage operations. Knowingly participating in having your war or spy slots filled is also considered a violation of this rule." If they're declaring or paying for beige and the other person is beiging them, there is intentional fighting. Now if the person getting beiged doesn't fight, is that slot filling? Because if that's the case, there are nations that get declared on all the time and are inactive and don't fight back, they would then be victims of the slot-filling rule. This isn't slot filling... This is something else. And if it's going to be a rule, it needs to be very clearly defined.

  23. Back in my day, the definition of a whale wasn't based on city count but infra per city. Infra = Fat; Fat=Blubber; Blubber is used in whaling. If you have a lot of cities but a rational infra cap, you ain't no whale in my book.

  27. I'll start out by saying when reading the post I quoted, I did think Edward meant a doctrine directly pertaining to an agreement with BK, and that he was referring to that as the foundational doctrine. So I just want to add clarity there since it seems I misinterpreted his intent. As for the idea that N$O had the right to intervene as it pleased, I won't disagree with there being agreement with that. I'm not active in any of those channels, but I don't doubt that it seemed there would have been support for the idea of using N$O power to prevent consolidation if we wished. Now, the question is how the interpretation of that is playing out here. Even the 'doctrine' in this sense is highly ambiguous as to how to actually act on it, and it doesn't change the fact of how the doctrine was acted on and communicated differently to t$ prior to the hit on Guard/GOB and after the hit. NPO never communicated out to t$ prior to the hit that they considered this war to be a part of the 'doctrine' and therefore meant we should hit everyone, and I think you all knew if you did communicate that out, that t$ wouldn't have attacked. The entire internal narrative of allied discussions was focused on other motivations, though based on what is being said, NPO had that in mind the entire time. I believe that inconsistency is important to point out, as it is key to understanding t$'s perspective.

  29. SNN as a news source is officially over. As in, even if I switch spheres, etc it wouldn't come back. No more leaks/press from Shifty. I don't care to keep an alliance that dies. It died, that's the bottomline. It's a failure in all regards and I accept that I could not keep it alive. So in my mind, it has lost it's right to exist as an entity in this game. I even did the proper thing of ending it so it does not remain a ghost/shell in this game. There should be no memory of it. Anywho, the SNN server still exists and will be renamed something else, but I'm out.

  30. Look back at prohibition. It created a black market for alcohol. And if someone ripped you off, you couldn't go to the authorities, you'd have to deal with it yourself by violent means. Same thing is happening now with the war on drugs. The war on drugs has been a complete and utter failure. It has not gotten rid of drugs, it has only made drug users criminals and it has created a black market which has increased crime and gang violence. All drugs, yes even hard core drugs such as Meth and Heroine, should be decriminalized. Maybe then people who are addicted to the more hardcore stuff will be more open about it and will be more willing to go and get rehabilitated without the fear of being incarcerated. 33. Whether or not BK knew about the agreement doesn't matter. The fact is you had an agreement to protect BK if they ever got in trouble. You can pretend that this had something to do with secret logs that you refuse to share, but you had already made a commitment to help BK in a situation like this. Any reason you give for entering the war is irrelevant because you had already committed to entering before any of that had happened. Additionally, this agreement you made essentially gave BK free reign to roll whoever they want as no single sphere could stand against them on their own. That means the rest of the game has the option to either: a) Let BK roll them one-by-one like they were planning to already do with Chaos b) Team up to have a chance against them but then that brings NPO in It's a lose-lose for everybody outside your grouping

  42. In my opinion, the lack of new, major political actors (as in, alliances) is not so much so a function of, "Enough people don't want to lead" or "Too many people want to lead" but a product of too few players being competent and being willing to lead an alliance that doesn't already have most of its foundations figured out. It's fair to chalk things up to competency, but I'd say the amount of time you're willing to invest, the energy/drive you have, and the vision you have are all necessary components of good leadership too. It's easier, in most cases, for one to assume leadership in an existing alliance and exert political influence of their own than it is to create a brand spanking new one, and lead for long enough/competently enough that something comes out of it. There are a few alliances that have succeeded in that regard, but they are not the norm. As for the OP: Identity (what're you here for? If you're just here to exist, then you're not going to go anywhere); Activity (self explanatory, but this covers day-to-day activity in Discord/slack channels, forums - if you have them); Community (this is more than just people talking shit in your private channels; how much does your average member actually care for the alliance and those who he plays the game with? How much do your leaders care?); A proper governing system (none of that democratic bullshit unless you can pull it off; even then, it's better to just not go that route. You end up with oligarchies); Leadership's investment into the game (you'll have 'active' leadership - as in they'll be around - but they won't care about the game/actually leading, which is just a big no-no); Military and Econ awareness (both of these can't be stressed enough. Knowing how to run a military is related to understanding game mechanics, but its important enough for me to highlight the difference. Similarly, if your Econ sucks - as in, isn't doing its best to maximize profit while still remaining in tune to how war works in the game - you're fricked when war time comes around); Keep your FA fluid. Be willing to work with people. Know your way around the joint. Some random shit: Having an alliance/theme gimmick. This is just 'fluff' but I've found having these things can attract more people to your grouping (...or turn them off massively. Their choice), Connections with other leaders/alliances. Be friendly to randoms. Cultivate ties (not necessarily political in nature) with people you wouldn't think you'd side with first thing next morning, Teach your kids how to play the game. Don't frick up and let new players run around free with no idea about how they'd actually progress. You do that, you'll end up with a shitton of new players who you invested a ton of money into that are worthless in war. Just don't. Praise Dio. There's honestly a lot more that can be said, but I guess at the end things come down to a few things: be willing to learn from your mistakes. Work towards a healthy balance of politics and fun. Try your best, and don't be disheartened when things don't go your way. Many of the serious - as in, major, not "serious" - political players today had a ton of shit not going their way in the past, but perseverance is a god-like quality to have. (Not to be confused with stubbornness or a lack of desire to change)

  43. Rose only started building after the leaks. Prior to this Rose had standard MMR levels, which was evident to anyone with a militarization tracker. Remember Rose MMR allows them to double buy to nearly max mil, which is kind of the point, it makes rapid militarization like in the 3-4 days between leak and attack possible. Rose also has no paperless ties to either of the spheres. They entered because it is Rose FA policy to find what BK did, that is planning to attack smaller spheres with nearly 4:1 odds and asking the other large sphere to cover them, unacceptable behavior that is absolutely a threat to them, as the smallest sphere. You understand untreatied alliances can enter wars with each other and NOT have paperless treaties, right? I actually quite appreciated when talking to Mhearl months ago about minispheres that Rose's opinion was that it could join neither side without tipping the scales, and so stayed to itself in it's tiny 'sphere' if you could call it that at all. The same reason it broke with t$ when they signed NPO is why Rose never drifted to Chaos or KETOG. It's a moral stand that meant the only people who'd attack are... The people they're fighting now. That's also why Citadels paranoia that KETOG would trip over itself to hit them is a bit ridiculous. I'd actually argue you'd be less likely to get hit in the short term for doing it, because it's a move they'd respect enough to let take hold. Your biggest threat would be people who don't respect that as much and even view it as a laughably easy opportunity, such as BK. Even then your previously friendly relations as a Bloc with them would likely keep you pretty safe from that too, short to mid term. Infact, the biggest threat of all to an independent Citadel would be you, Elijiah. You're rather antagonistic, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. But it does make people want to roll you, and would be the greatest incentivizing force for short term considerations of attacking an independent Citadel.

  44. I'm tired of beating my head against this Roq, so I'm going to lay it out in very simple terms my criteria for signing paper with an Alliance. We have a genuine relationship outside of game politics, even if it's very simple and rudimentary as this is just an internet browser game. Talking in discords, commenting on forum posts, it really doesn't take much. Do not show up, ask for an embassy, and assume you're going to get an MDP the next week. Looking at you Cornerstone. Don't post, or have members post bigoted shit. We don't need ideological alignment in any way, just don't be an !@#$ or have your members be !@#$ without consequence. Not saying no one can frick up; I, like many of you, was 16 and liked Family Guy at some point in my life, but just acknowledge it, correct it and move on. Be honest with me. Especially no lies by omission. Keep the information flowing, even minor shit, and if you have any concerns about my behaviour IC or OOC, tell me and we'll hash it out. Be competent. You don't need to be an elite squad of people who have over 2 years in this game who turn down their partners for sex if their is a blitz on. Can I expect 50% of your members to attend the blitz, 30 if you're a mass alliance? Do you trim your inactives? Do you have some growth plan, doesn't matter if it differs from mine? When one of your noobs does something wrong in a war, do you correct them? Can I bring you a nation that needs countering and feel assured that you will try to find that counter and most likely succeed, circumstances permitting? Great, that's it. These are literally all I ever looked for in an alliance. Pre Silent War, I was in three embassies as a diplomat. NPO, T$ and Mensa. NPO was kind of inactive/ there was no spark there, the T$ board was shut down by Keegoz over some big brouhaha involving Pubstomper and on the Mensa board, we cracked jokes and chatted shit. When I became Emperor of Rose, Mensa was the only alliance that fit those criteria. And I was hesitant to ask them because I didn't want to trade on our friendships to bail out an alliance that might not make it till Christmas. The only time I ever broke with the first point was when UPN wanted a protectorate, but Sketchy had a close relationship with them and I still new a couple of gov. Every other piece of paper, the ones I kept and the ones I cut, were dictated by this ethos. And if anyone wants to know how solid of a bro @Buorhann is in game, I cut my VM short and came out of it with no buildings or mil. Got slotted, turned two wars but the third guy was giving me trouble. Log in this morning and his AS is gone, because Bourhann picked him up and was quite literally saving my ass. One hell of a hippo.

  45. Your allies, United States of America, The Global Union, and Elite Democratic Republic are all involved. Seeing as how United States of America and Elite Democratic Republic have signed a MDoAP and ODoAP with you respectively, they should've told you. Or they should have at least informed you they were at war. The market spiking could also be an indicator, or radiation. However, I don't believe world wars usually affect micros, aside from radiation and in the market, so I wouldn't go as far as saying not knowing is dumb. You've lasted almost 2 months on Orbis, so I would say you should take interest in politics outside of micros.
