I've never ever been a fan of IRC, to this day I still hate the program. The ease of being anonymous is nice, but it's also the main reason I hate it. People can change names on a whim, start up another anonymous account and get information from those that don't know any better.
Aside from those annoyances, I just don't like the layout, the fact that you have to be on to see information and have communication with multiple people, etc...
Then there's forums, yes every alliance has a forum, and every alliance uses them well. I also am not a huge fan of those, and have been working with others to create a new set of forums for our alliance that is active in multiple games.
That all being said, I've decided to give Slack a try. Sure it's targeted for businesses, but the perks are too good to ignore.
- Custom channels along with private groups
- Required User registration
- Ability to remain somewhat anonymous
- Tons of plugin combinations, API options, etc...
- Trusted Apps for iOS, Android, Windows already established.
The only major downside I see to slack is the difficulty of allowing diplomats free access. Of course they could just join the team and we can control their options from there, but it's not as easy as just /join #channelname.
So we're going to try it out for a little while and see how it does for our alliance. Yes we'll still have that dreaded IRC, but hopefully it is something we can altogether drop aside from the public channel for diplomats.
