MIDDLE-AGES

The Veliki were a nomadic South Slav tribe first mentioned by the Byzantine historian Procopiusas as the tall and hardy people who emerged (along with the Antes and the Sclaveni) from the area of the Carpathian Mountains, the lower Danube and the Black Sea in the 5th Century. By the 6th Century they became a sedentary people after settling the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers and Pannonian Basin, establishing an area which would become known as Velika and roughly comprises the borders of the modern Velikan state to this day. The word "Velika" means "big" or "great" in the Velikan language, which gives an idea of the early patriotic underpinning of the country.

The settling of such a fertile river basin accelerated the transition from a nomadic hunter society to a feudal farming-based society, and was roughly contiguous with the Christianization of the Veliki by the Byzantines. By the beginning of the 8th Century the Kingdom of Velika had been established as a Christian feudal-agricultural kingdom in the mold of other European states. This was the transition from tribal society to statehood.

By the 10th Century Old Church Slavonic was introduced to Velika, first as the language of the liturgy and gradually to non-liturgical purposes, eventually becoming the Velikan version of Old Slavonic, which itself would eventually develop into the Velikan language. By the 11th Century the Velikan Orthodox Church became independent from Constantinople, greatly strengthening the Velikan state and the monarchy.

EARLY-MODERN

By the beginning of the 20th Century Velika was slowly struggling with the enormous social changes of the Industrial Revolution. The vast majority of the population lived on the brink of famine in the countryside and worked on land they did not own. Working conditions in the cities were low and unrest soon gathered pace. In the capital Ostromir armed steel workers led by the Communist Party seized power and forced the King to abdicate and flee the country, a socialist state called the "People's Republic of Velika" was formed that year. The new government nationalized the banks and industry, and began redistribution of the land and collectivization of agriculture.

TERRAIN

Located at the crossroads between Central and Southern Europe, Velika is found in the Balkan peninsula and the Pannonian Plain. The Pannonian Plain covers the northern part of the country while the easternmost tip of Velika extends into the Wallachian Plain. The terrain of central part of the country, consists chiefly of hills traversed by the rivers. Mountains dominate the southern third of Velika. Dinaric Alps stretch in the west and the southwest following the flow of the rivers Drina and Ibar. Carpathian Mountains and Balkan Mountains stretch in north–south direction in the eastern Velika.

With 30% of its territory covered by forest, Velika is considered to be a middle-forested country. The most common trees are oak, beech, pines and firs.

CLIMATE

The climate of Velika is under the influences of the landmass of Eurasia and Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. With mean January temperatures around 0 °C (32 °F), and mean July temperatures of 22 °C (72 °F), it can be classified into humid subtropical climate. In the north, the climate is more continental, with cold winters, and hot, humid summers along with well distributed rainfall patterns. In the south, summers and autumns are drier, and winters are relatively cold, with heavy inland snowfall in the mountains.

Differences in elevation, proximity to the Adriatic Sea and large river basins, as well as exposure to the winds account for climate variations. Southern Velika is subject to Mediterranean influences. However, the Dinaric Alps and other mountain ranges contribute to the cooling of most of the warm air masses. Winters are quite harsh in the country's plateaus, because of the mountains which encircle it. One of the climatic features of Velika is Košava ("Wind"), a cold and very squally southeastern wind which starts in the Carpathian Mountains and follows the Danube northwest through the Iron Gate where it gains a jet effect and continues far south.

The economy is controlled and directed by the Ministry of Central Planning, which implements the Five-Year Plans. The Ministry also fixes wages and salaries, as well as the prices of goods. This comprises the land and underground riches, the mines, forests, pastures, waters, natural energy resources, the plants, factories, machine and tractor stations, the banks, the roads of communication and means of rail, water, and air transport, post, telegraph, telephone offices, radio and TV stations, cinematography.

2) Collective farm property, i.e. the property of the individual collective farms themselves. This comprises the buildings, machines, equipment, means of transport, tools and implements, livestock, fruit trees, agricultural and livestock products within the collective farms.

3) Personal property, i.e. the property of individual persons. This comprises income from lawful sources, dwelling houses, clothing and other household implements and items.

Since the revolution the PAFV has become a large, well-equipped and professional military force, though one tightly controlled by the Communist Party. The PAFV is under the command of the Council of State, specifically the Ministry of National Defense.
